Guest guest
Hi Harry. You stated... Two hours after lunch my gbs was 90. * awesome! BTW it is not gbs it is B G S for blood sugar. Three hours after lunch my gbs was 125. * your bgs is increasing and am thinking it is because the lantus may need bumped up 1 or 2 units. Recall, lantus is in charge of keeping bgs down in between meals and while you sleep from 10 PM til 6 7 AM etc.
Guest guest
just another confirmation email Harry to say bump the Lantus up by 1 or 2 units. If you get the same results tomorrow after bumping up the lantus buy 1 or 2 units, then bump it up 1 or 2 more units again. The lantus needs increased and while you increase the lantus, I'd keep your humalog dose 4 units per 15 grams of carbs for now. Keep reporting to the list and we'll get it down soon. Guest guest
I know the b stands for blood and the s stands for sugar, but what does the g stand for? Guest guest
Harry, from another list I am on. These folks are talking to a type 2 wanting to go on lantus and humalog. I just wanted to pass this along to you to encourage you. Up the lantus 2 units this evening. Not 1, but 2. Here is what a few 15 year type 2 veterens say about using insulin as a type 2 both of them type 2... begin quote > It matters what the meter says, not how much it takes. > > When you get that basal number established for several consecutive days, > THEN you can 'think' about a bolus insulin for carbs. As a CDE once told me, " no amount of insulin is worth any complication " or, it doesn't matter how much insulin you end up needing, that's just what your body needs. Don't get hung up on the number of insulin units, pay attention to the meter and shoot what you need. (And my needs are high, I shoot 10 units of Humalog for every 15 grams of carb.) end quote Re: advice for Harry > > > > Hi Harry. > > > > You stated... > > > > Two hours after lunch my gbs was 90. > > > > * awesome! Guest guest
BTW Harry if you have already taken your lantus, just go ahead and dose 2 more units, 9 total, regardless if you have already taken your lantus... if that don't work we up it to 11 tomorrow evening... Guest guest
It stands for glucose. Re: advice for Harry I know the b stands for blood and the s stands for sugar, but what does the g stand for? Guest guest
I thought so. Since the g stands for glucose, it is redundant to say s for sugar, and it always takes b or blood to get a glucose monitor to give a reading. So in the future my log file will just have the letter g to signify glucose level. Guest guest
Good going, Harry! Re: advice for Harry Pre-lunch gbs was 128. For lunch I consumed 15 grams of carbs plus 7 units of Humalog. Two hours after lunch my gbs was 90. Three hours after lunch my gbs was 125. Guest guest
Yes, good job Harry. You are probably have the dawn effect, which so many diabetics have-the blood sugar goes up in the early morning hours, so you need more insulin between the hours of 3-7 AM. I take considerably more insulin in my pump during the hours than I do the rest of the day. Re: advice for Harry Just some ideas here... it looks like you should up the lantus to 12 since your morning bgs is high. Also, your 2 hour post breakfast test is high so by uping the lantus 1 more unit, and perhaps adjusting the humalog up a little or keeping it the same, it could get your morning under control. However, for lunch and dinner, since your 2 / 3 hour tests were good, you might have to drop your humalog ratio down some since you'll have some more lantus in you to help some. I think once you get the lantus up 1 more unit then you can adjust your humalog to accomidate the lantus and carbs to finish this process. I'd say you have it about 85% down. Good job! regards, Re: advice for Harry > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > That is good to know: > > > > > > > > > 1 unit of Humalog drops the gbs 60 points without any carbs > > > > > consumed. > > > > > > > > > Hey!, that's scarey! > > > > > > > > > So, one must not only know their gbs before meal, but also > > > > calculate > > > > > > the > > > > > > > > > number of carbs consumed in order to estimate the proper > > dosage. > > > > > One > > > > > > > > > doesn't want to go too low! > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >

Guest guest
good job Harry getting that down. Increase the lantus to 14 this evening and your bgs should be down more in the morning but don't forget to up your ratio for lunch/dinner so you don't go low. You can't keep it the same. Guest guest
Harry, You need to take the " dawn affect " into account. It is usual for most diabetics to have a rise in BG between about 3AM and 7Am.Your body starts putting out more glucose for the energy you need when you awaken. Re: advice for Harry 9/25/2003 Last night: Lantus 15 G 88 I consumed 5 carbs thinking it would raise my glucose level up about 30 points while I slept, and it would come down by the time I woke up. Evidently, I was wrong again. It did raise my glucose level around 30 points, but it didn't come down. So I guess if your glucose level is in the theraputic range, the best thing to do is just take your bedtime insulin and forget about it. Guest guest
Harry it might take you 3 units of humalog to lower your bgs 60 points. I seen your breakfast of 129 and you took 2 extra and was 149 or so 2 hours later. I'm thinking it may be 3 or 4 units of H to lower your bgs 60 points so play with that some when you are high again. Guest guest
cool! I'm glad you are able to have something you enjoy Harry. Remember I was saying that when you get your bgs under control, you can use humalog to help eat some foods you like *occasionally*. Once you show for 7 days that 7 units of H covers 15 grams per meal you can assume you can double it up for 30, 45 grams, etc. However, after 45 grams a meal, it has been my personal experience, that my sugars will go crazy and become unmanageable. Often times this is true even at eating 45 grams. I'd say IMO don't go above 45 grams of carbs when eating those " lets enjoy myself! " meals. If after 1 week of showing 15 grams at 7 units of H work for you for the meals, I'd say it would be safe to up your meals to 30 grams where you want to eat more. For example, uping lunch and dinner carbs to 30 and your H dose to 14 for those meals. I would never recommend to eat more than 15 grams for breakfast though since you, in the early mornings, are pulling out of the liver dump. I'm excited for you Harry! Your getting this totally under control in under 2 weeks I think it has been. Good job! Keep posting your results and like I say, if it shows the same for the next 4 or 5 days, then I think you got it my friend! I caution you to not experiment quite yet with increasing your carb grams and humalog. Keep all meals at 15 grams for 5 more days then it is time to play! regards, Re: advice for Harry > > > > > > > > > > Harry it might take you 3 units of humalog to lower your bgs 60 > points. > > I > > > > seen your breakfast of 129 and you took 2 extra and was 149 or so 2 > > hours > > > > later.
