Sunny,

That is the purpose of a support forum. We share our experiences, and

sometimes vent.

Hopefully, we can also pass on factual information, as well. We probably won't

be

technically accurate, 100% of the time, because we do speak from our own

understanding,

which varies depending on our background etc.

You are right about there being a larger picture. That picture involves medical

research,

and how (and by whom) it is done. Right now, there is little incentive or funds

for

independent research into systemic illness and breast implants.

Statements like " it was in my brain all the way to my feet" get in the way of physicians taking you seriously. Physicians are literal creatures and when patients make such statements, since they are not literally factual, credibility is lost. Instead, present yourself with accuracy and without any drama.

How would you feel about saying, instead, "Soon after my implantation, I developed numerous systemic symptoms such that I felt overwhelmingly ill and was unable to impact any improvement in my health regardless of what remedies various physicians prescribed. I became more and more ill. Eventually, I was encouraged to consider a linkage between my debilitating symptoms and my implants and encouraged to have them removed. When they were removed, the implants were found to have deteriorated and, in addition to having leaked into my lymphatic system, they were actually infiltrated by mold and fungus. Soon after explantation, my illnesses began to ease and recovery seemed to be in progress. I look forward to physicians looking more closely at cases such as mine so as to avoid recurrences of these grave problems for other women."

Re: Credibility issues

Lea,

AMEN to that story. I am going to read your story and so sorry those things destroyed your health. I am talking Saline for me and in one year and 4 months destroyed me so I understand. I don't feel like we have to convince anyone of this we know the truth. I am a firm believer, I don't have the pathologist reports back, but when I get them I will let everyone know what was growing in my one year old saline implants. Whatever it was no antibiotics could kill it, it was in my brain all the way to my feet. I believe every word anyone says about silicone and saline, I am living proof of the fact.

Sherry,

It sounds like you feel every woman who presents herself with

problems like this should at least have a bachelor's degree and know

how to talk about their problems. Most of us simply do not have a

M.D. attached to our names and have to use what we have to describe

our symptoms. I may have been fortunate that I knew how to talk with

my doctors (neurologists (2) and others) and they agreed my implant

caused my brain fog and neurological symptoms. Many women simply do

not have the words to do this. It is simply too much to expect when

you have such severe problems.

Many have such serious brain damage and brain fog that they are lucky

to be able to tell the doctor what parts of their bodies are giving

them problems.

Most doctors just do not have the time or will not take the time to

really find out what is wrong.

This is a good point. The more factual we can be, in discussing our situation

wtih our

doctors, the better. There will be (and are) some for whom it won't matter how

we discuss

it. Those doctors have their minds shut. But we won't know until we try. I

have had

mixed success. Some doctors most certainly do listen, but others don't.

I hope that more doctors who have implants, or family members who do, will help

spread

the message that these can cause systemic problems. They may be in a better

position to

influence their colleagues.

Maybe that's why we need to enlist doctors like Sherry and others here and on

E.com and

elsewhere to help spread the message.

This is a serious problem, because so many women are not getting helped.

Perhaps, but most of the women presenting to doctors are not on lines

like this.

Donna,

THe fact is that doctors SHOULD listen to their patients, regardless of how

ineloquently

they may present themselves. That is, after all, a doctor's job. The problem

is that

doctors have historically not taken women as seriously as men, and with breast

implants,

the problem is even worse.

I had a friend who was very well-spoken and well-educated but had an HMO. She

told the

doctor repeatedly that she had excessive bleeding and was getting sicker and

sicker. The

doctor would not refer her to a specialist except a psychiatrist. As it turned

out, my friend

had ovarian cancer.

It is NOT right that doctors have closed minds on the issue of breast implants.

The sad

fact is that most of them do, because they are told by the 'experts' that

implants are safe.

And unless you can somehow get through that bias, they are not going to listen.

That is

where unfortunately we do need as much help as we can get, through people who

know

how to talk to them. God knows I don't. I have no patience with most doctors.

Lynda,

I couldn't agree with you more! . . . I'm convinced

what breast implants do to a woman's brain is even

more devastating that what it does to her body.

By the time I had my implants removed (silicone gel -

16 years), I couldn't do the simplest job right! . . .

I got lost just driving down the street! I couldn't

carry a number across the room (still can't) . . .

It's humiliating to make stupid mistakes, to stumble

over words, and to substitute the wrong words when

speaking! . . . One can only make a joke of it " It's a

blonde moment. " . . . but it hurts just the same!

I've noticed from the first support meeting that

implant women tend to take things personally,

misconstrue things, take offense, get defensive, have

anger outbursts, mood swings, etc. far more than

average. When you get a room full of implanted women,

it's much different than other groups of women. Lynda

as a support leader, I know you know what I mean!

It really makes it easy for doctors to treat us like

we're nutz . . . when their " safe " devices are at the

root of the problem!

Rogene,

Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And not many understand that!!!

My experience with women in my group (over 10,000 at one time) was

that doctors treated them very badly except for a very few, did not

take them seriously, lied to them, etc., etc., etc.

Then there were the good doctors who listened and really tried to

help, and many did not know what to do to help. But they did listen

and did try.

The women were so ill that many could never have enunciated their

problems in a coherent way.

It is just the way this illness is, and to get some doctors to

understand is like trying to butt your head bloody on a brick wall.

Well you got lucky I begged for help, no luck except for the support site. Thank God for that! I was going to ask a question to you all. If a PS is a 30 year board certified to the max. Member The American Board of Plastic Surgery, Chief of his staff, etc. Should he be able to tell if a girl is infected????????????????? I was just wondering?? Should he have ran a test or even felt the cc on the right side, like Dr. Kolb did without a test?????? I was just wondering. I begged him for help in fact so many times he would laugh at me and say, Donna you miss me. I was just wondering is this one of the things a PS learns in School and continued education. Sign for infection. If you told him you had a fever is this infection? I am sorry I don't understand how someone so certified for plastic surgery for so long. Then how Dr. Kolb can tell by feeling and just looking at me?? I am a little puzzled here?

Sherry,

I hope you stay on the site and get help with getting those implants removed. All I can say is it is easy to go into denial and not believe this is really happening to you. I felt the same way, the gut feeling is the one I would choose. I learned on thing in the past year and 4 month. I will never believe everything a doctor tells me that is for sure. I will also follow my gut, let's face it I was right and the doctor's who told me I was just phyco was wrong. They have and education and I don't. I would get those things out of you if you are getting sick period. I wouldn't look for anything except a specialist that removes implant and believes you when you say you are sick. Good Luck and please don't get mad and leave this site, we are all just venting and angry. The word PS or Dr is a touchy subject for some of us. I am not saying all I am saying the majority of them. I had implants to short of a time and was to healthy prior to implants for any DR to tell me that they didn't make me sick. I know that know, but there was times that the DR PS actually had me convinced my nerves were just shot or I was stressed. I can't believe I feel for this, It won't happen again to me not in this lifetime anyway.

Sincerely,

Donna

I was able to convince my psychologist about implant illness. When

I was first talking with her about the implants, she didn't believe

they made women sick, because she had never come across anyone who

tied the two together. I didn't spend time trying to convince her

of the connection, but we knew something triggered an immune

response in my body and she was trying to help me deal with that at

first. What convinced her was when I told her about my visit to my

original plastic surgeon, and that on the same day I was there,

another woman was there with the same symptoms as me, crying,

pleading for the doctor to remove them. Then when I told my

psychologist about Dr. Feng, and that Dr. Feng specialized in

removing implants - and that she had performed thousands of explants

from women mostly complaining of the same problems, she became a

believer. Now she has a patient with saline implants who is sick

and she asked if the patient could anonymously call me if she felt

comfortable doing so, and I said " absolutely " .

My gynecologist believed the implants made me ill, as well. He said

he never trusted implants. When he retired a few months ago, I was

pretty devastated.

The psychologist I had already knew about implant illness, because she has

worked with

many women who had had breast implants. She is a cancer survivor, and has

empathy for

people who have serious illnesses - dealing with the uncertainty of takes a

toll. She was a

huge help to me.

--- Molly, it is a downright shame how money is spent by the

government. Instead of helping children, seniors or women's health

issue research (such as benefitting the breast implant controversy)

pictures are purchased for 1-1/2 million dollars to hang in the

Parliament Buildings in Ottawa! (Canada, that is) Gotta wonder????

Love as usual,

Sunny :)

Sherry, If you are seriously interested in researching this, then I would recommend that you contact Dr. Kolb at www.plastikos.com. I am quite certain that she has all the information that you might be looking for. Patty_00_ <5678@...> wrote: The medical community largely dismisses the notion that the foreign body, silicone, implanted into the body causes illness. This is dismissed because there has been no presentation regarding the formation of mold and fungus. Were THAT presented with results from cultures, the medical community would BELIEVE. illnesses is dismissed because it makes no sense UNTIL the development of fungus is presented. Please know that this theory has not made its way into the medical literature. Can anyone send me actual culture results along with implant histories? Thank you, Sherry

No. Not amazing. That is the information that they have been told by the powers that be. Remember, silicone implants have been re-introduced into the marketplace suggesting that they are no longer thought to be dangerous.

No, no, no. I know all about brain fog. I have been severely affected by it. (Unfortunately, this is also one very common symptom of menopause so it is scientifically impossible to state factually that the implants cause my brain fog. Instead, I say that.... "While I realize that many of my symptoms - short term memory loss, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis are also commonly seen during menopause - my persistent skin rash is not and after doing lots of research and speaking to many other affected women, I have come to realize that my breast implants are most likely the cause and, as a result, I have faced that I must have them removed.") , What I am saying doesn't require the vocabulary you suggest. I am saying that it is important - if you want to be seen as credible - to make sense, to speak to the facts and to avoid at all costs any unnecessarily dramatic words. (By the way, this isn't a horrible thing to learn in life anyway if one wants to be taken seriously.) Tell your physician the facts and not your opinions. Avoid grandiosity (I was infected from my brain to my feet) and be rational. Speak factually..... the dates you were implanted, the dates you experienced specific symptoms - not your conclusions - and you will be heard.

Understand that just having had breast augmentation, we are labeled not particularly stable to begin with. Now, we all agree that we focused excessively on the importance of our breast size and should have been more sensible. So, don't hold it against the medical community for thinking that, as well. Overcome it by speaking FACTUALLY and you will be taken seriously.

Sherry,

You are giving many of these doctors too much credit. I know many

women who did just as you say and they were dismissed as nut cases.

Many doctors simply refuse to hear anything that will affect their

bottom line ($$$$$$$$$$$).

Not that they are no longer considered to be dangerous, but that the

FDA panel was weighted with 7 plastic surgeons who voted for them

even when the evidence was there to suggest otherwise. And final

approval has not been given.

I thank everyone who offered information and hospitality. I don't want to be insulted further without even the benefit of anyone recognizing the validity of my advice. When patients are dismissed "as nut cases", it is because they made claims that made no scientific sense. I have explained that most physicians are unaware of the fungus and mold association that does make sense. Claiming to have a list of symptoms that I have heard here - such as prominent veins in the hand - and associating that with the mere presence of implants - without associating the migration and presence of fungus - is a sure way to be dismissed as a nut case.

Best wishes for health to all.
