I know when to be honest. Tn. uhh. I think I need to stay in Va. at least for

a little while considering what's happening here at home. But I been to parts

Not at the moment....but I understand a " lateral transfer " is being explored.

Where to and doing what...I haven't been clued in on. Same for the time

frame. But at least some of the powers that be are ready to move on.......

almost 10 yrs here....13.+ an hour....shift differential, no comp time,

longevity pay, union covered...(pay increased dramatically a yr ago, across

the board) when union came in...;-)

I have never posted before but I believe all of you who feel you are

underpaid at 10 plus dollars an hour should come and work for my agency,

Overton County E-911. We dispatch for the local Sheriff's dept, (including

all NCIC funtions ie: veh registration, DL's, criminal historys etc.)

answer all 911 lines, handle fire and EMS, durring the day issue electrical

permits and soon to come dispatching for the local electric co. after hours.

We have 2 dispatchers on duty at all times, this has only been for less

than a year. Before that there was just one on duty from 6 pm to 6 am and

that dispatcher was me. The dispatchers here start out at $7.00 and hour,

after 6 months probation it raises I think to $7.30 an hour I have worked

for this agency for almost three years (prior to that I worked for the

Sheriff's dept) I make $7.49 an hour but with the way our scheduling works I

get 8 hours of overtime which is time and a half. Which still only works

out to $11 something and hour for those 8 hours. I am very grateful to have

a job and do enjoy my work. My director and the Board of Directors have all

pulled to get us a pay raise but the powers that be say no. So, the next

time you feel underpaid think of me sorry this post has been so long.

Our big top pay is $8.43. The BIG pay comes when you are promoted to Sergeant

then your pays jumps to a whopping $9.00 - $9.50

Currently making $20.27 an hour . 18 months on the job. We currently top

out at $45,000 after 3 years, but have been in contract negotiations since

December so even with the 3 percent they are offering us it will be higher.

We have been in negotiations for the last year for a contract with our

county. We are represented by our local FOP and allowed to be " special

associate " members. I thought we had been allowed to join as full members by

a charter change but found out yesterday we are not. We pay dues, can

discuss issues, vote but I guess cannot hold office or get any of the

bennies offered the officers from the FOP. Any way our contract was ratified

last night. I have worked for the county as a Dispatcher (do it all call

taker/dispatcher-police/fire/ems) for 19 years this month. I am currently

making $12.97/hr and when the contract takes effect the 28th of this month I

will be making $16.34/hr. We will get a guaranteed 2.5% cola the next three

years. Next year for my 20 years I will get a longevity bonus of $4000 on my

anniversary date and similar for others for 5, 10, 15, etc. We do not get

comp time. We get time and a half over 80 hours (in a 14 day period). One

hour paid if put on call and two hours paid if called in no matter if needed

or not. No shift differential. We do not have classifications at this time

but do get 21/2% if working as a CTO. We have 10 full time dispatchers and

dispatch for the county sheriff office, three PD's, county EMS and 11 fire

departments. Since the state has gone to a central dispatch we do assist a

lot with the Troopers that work in our area. Starting in 2001 we will get

reimbursed up to 6 hours of tuition per semester for college courses that

will better our jobs. Also we are in the process of moving into a new

Justice Center and a new dispatch room, Moving out of the large closet we

work in now. A lot of great things are happening right now and I hope they

continue.

I know that there are dispatch centers in small departments all

across the nation that have pay scales similar to yours.

And the larger departments, even though they make more money,

often the cost of living is much higher. And the work very tough.

Please don't get me wrong, I worked at a department doing the

same work you're doing and made minimum wage. The work

was tough at times... and the responsibilities huge...

No doubt that most people doing this work are underpaid whether

their department is large or small.

I've tried them both.... I'll take the small. (grin)

Rhonda, sorry it took so long to answer, had to find a current payscale

copy....calltaker starts at $16.85/hr and top is $20.48/hr....dispatcher

starts at $18.96/hr and top is $24.14/hr.....longevity pay is no longer in

effect 'cept for some of us dinosaurs. LESA accepts applications year

'round and tests 2 or 3 times a year.

If you have high aspirations, the Director makes $45.95/hr!

I work in Oak Lawn,IL a south suburb of Chicago. We dispatch police for

four towns and fire for seven. We have 26 full-time dispatchers and no part

timers. We work a 6-2 schedule with every 5th and 6th weekend off. We have

minimum staffing of 5 plus a supervisor, but there are usually 7 per shift

except for midnights where 5 is okay. We currently start at $2699 per month

and top out at $3884 per month in 3 years. We are currently in negotiations

(and have been since December). We just tested in December

to replace our civil service list. The requirements were changed to have

only experienced dispatchers apply so only 31 people applied as opposed to

the 650 that did when I took the last test. Only 16 people passsed and we

are already on number 13 on our list so I believe we will be testing sooner

than 2001. I will keep everyone posted. I started out doing this job for

$6.50 an hour and am floored everyday that I get paid well to do a job I

love . There is no better feeling. Alot of people in my center have been

here 20+ years and some even less and gripe about not getting more money.

But, they don't know what its like to have to do records work, work alone,

type complaints,watch prisoners on a monitor,dispatch fire calls,answer 911

lines and talk to an irate person at the window about a ticket! All we do

is dispatch,answer calls or enter things into LEADS. I will never complain.

Been dispatching 16 months. We are on salary that is something like

$18,700. Averages to $8.73 an hour or something like that. There is no pay

scale based on years experience, etc. The employee that's been there 15

years is paid the same as me. We are the second lowest paid sheriff's

department in the state of Indiana. We do have comp time, holiday time,

personal days, and sick days. Insurance isn't nothing to brag about.

Retirement plan is pretty good though. Cost of living in our area....good

question. Rent prices are any where from $350 to $450 for average home I

would say.

We are very frustrated by our wages, but hang in there because we love

our jobs.

I also work for our EMS which is only $7.33 an hour. Our county highway

department workers make more than that per hour. The big joke around the

EMS building: " The next time someone wants an ambulance, we'll send them a

damn dump truck!!! "
