Guest guest
Ann- My name is Tanda and my 8 mnth old daughter Kaia started her DOC band last week. Most of the time I don't even think that she knows that she has something on her head. I know how scared you must be for your son but rest assured that you have come to the right place for support and answers to your questions. Guest guest
Hi Tammy & in Wisconsin. We are in La Crosse area. Give me a call if in area. No not always cosmetic. We still need to get full approval for band but possible jaw & eye problems. Our insurance will cover 100% local but working on getting the DOC Band in Madison 100% since our local guy won't make the helmet due to FDA stuff going on. Short, really busy. Guest guest
Ann- Hi! I hear you... My husband and I just had our son casted on Thursday, May 11 for a DOC band. Before we actually got to this point - I was a complete nightmare. I stressed over whether or not we should get the band. I didn't know alot about the band and I had read so much material that I was, quite honestly, confused - helmet vs. band, repositioning, will it round out on its own?.... Pediatrician stating that it will correct itself - maybe not 100% but it won't show with his hair.. Anyway, we got a second opinion from a pediatric neurosurgeon who did recommend the band and went forward. I still cringe at the thought of the band on his tiny little head and I get sad when I read comments from other parents about missing kissing their little one on the forehead. But all in all, I think we are doing the right thing. Our son will get his band on Friday, May 26. He will be 5 months on May 19. Good luck. It will all be ok...and as my husband says - time will go by very quickly and the results will be worth it. Tammy > -----Original Message----- > From: annspringborn@... Guest guest
Ann, Our daughter started wearing a helmet on her 5 month birthday. It was a shock for us when at her 4 month appointment her pediatrician said she would need helmet therapy. Her head is similar to what you've noted about your son. We had noticed flat spots on her head but assumed that this would all work itself out with repositioning etc. We had never heard of or thought about plagio until this appointment. What a shock it was and there was a lot of crying in our home too (there still are a few tears once in a while :>). But Jessie adjusted quickly and she rarely fusses about the helmet now (she's been in it almost 4 weeks). It is just part of our normal everyday life and although everyday I wish she didn't have to wear it, I'm so THANKFUL for the chance to help correct it while she's young and won't remember this. And after 4 weeks we are definitely seeing improvement. Jessie just goes about her day and does everything a normal 6 month old would do, she's just a little cuter with her pink helmet on. Folks here have posted a lot of good info about insurance appeals and other ways to help pay for the helmet or band. We are still waiting to find out if our insurance is going to cover anything but decided to go ahead regardless. Good luck to you and your family. Guest guest
Dear Ann, You have come to the right place for commiserating! Our son gets the band on the 26th of May. I have had my share of pity parties, too. My heart breaks to think of all of our little sweeties wearing these things. But when I really think about the long-term, I am so thankful for this treatment so that when he's 15 people won't call him crooked head or something worse! Please feel free to call on us for support, that's what we are all here for. In the meantime, I'm trying to think of a funny response for all of the stares that I know we're sure to get! Any suggestions? Good luck! Ann in Kansas ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Guest guest
Hi, Ann-- I'll join your pity party--I know just how you feel! Last month we found out our son (now 8 mos.) would have to have a DOC band and when they showed it to me it was all I could do not to cry. He gets casted for it tomorrow. I've slowly gotten used to the idea over the last month, although I still sometimes cringe thinking about it. I AM looking forward to his head looking better; the more I look now the more I see how crooked he is! It doesn't sounds like Ethans head is too bad--'s is flat on the back right, too, and his forehead seems okay, but his ears definitely aren't symmetrical! About the insurance, ours has flatly denied it twice, so we're having to appeal (and apparently I only get one shot). In the meantime, we're going to pay for it ourselves and hope insurance comes through in the end. I don't know what your neuro means by " in this area " but we live in Kansas, and we're having a lot of trouble. Our insurance company told me they've NEVER approved a helmet or band because it's cosmetic and they don't budge. Just fight really hard--I think a lot of people have had good luck. I hope you start to feel better about the helmet. I figure there will be a point where I look back and say " it wasn't so bad " but in the meantime I'm really grumpy about it, and that's okay. Guest guest
Thanks for all the advice. Fortunately, the neurosurgeon ruled out torticollis (spelling?). Now that I am reading the brochures that he gave us with a more reasonable mindset, it IS the band that the doc recommended...not the helmet. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for giving me a shoulder to cry on. Ann
Guest guest
Hi Ann! You've missed many a pity party 'round here! You'll feel better about all of this after you've had some time to absorb it all. The day my daughter was diagnosed, I cried for hours too. I didn't want other people to think Hanna was handicapped or something. Now that she has her band, it's not as bad as I had imagined. People actually think she looks cute (of course they do - she was adorable to begin with!!!). Many of us parents find that decorating the band or helmet takes a lot of the pressure off. People are more comfortable with the idea when it doesn't look so clinical. Some of us paint, some use stickers, and there has even been some hot glue guns involved! There are really no limits. People get the craziest ideas as to what it's for. Someone even commented to one of our Moms that "somebody finally made something to protect babies from you young people dropping them"!! I've also found that keeping hand-outs with me helps. When someone asks, or blatantly GAWKS, I give them one. You can see my hand-out in the files section under "hand-outfinal". Make sure you check the files for various insurance appeals letters, and of course, VERY cute pictures of a lot of our babies! Chin up! And when ever you want to have a pity party, you've found the right crowd! kendra annspringborn@... wrote: My husband and I just saw a neurosurgeon today after being referred by our pediatrician. Guest guest
Hi All, I know it is hard, and there were and still are tears in our house, too. It is so hard in the beginning, especially when you are blindsided like that! At least once a week when I took 's band off, I cried. But these were happy, joyful tears, just seeing the improvement in his head made me cry. It is such a long, exhausting process between, Dr.s, insurance, casting, fitting, stares... When that little noggin starts changing for the better (for once) it can be overwhelming. It was for me (but hey, I'm a nut sometimes). It is SO worth it - every struggle has turned into a blessing. It will for you all too. Tami > Hi, Ann-- > > I'll join your pity party--I know just how you feel! Guest guest
Hi Ann, I'm glad you're here! I know you've already been able to hear from a few of the members here, but I wanted to give you another shoulder to cry on anyway You know how time flies when your children are babies? You turn around one day and wonder who took your tiny, wrinkled squawler and left the running, messy, into-everything motor mouth in their place? Ethan will be out of the helmet before you know it! Don't worry too much about putting Ethan in a "contraption." If a kid can get used to wearing a diaper....well, they can get used to ANYTHING! And don't take your neuro's word on whether your insurance will cover the helmet or not. Insurance's paying for the band/helmet are starting to become the rule more than the exception! Guest guest
Ann, I had the same reaction!!! I cried for hours when I found out the our 5 month old would need a one too. Guest guest
Ann, I'm pretty much repeating what all of these good people have told you, but you definitely have come to the right place. I remember just going numb when the neuro told me Maddie would need the band. My ped suggested I go see him but she really thought he'd tell me not to worry about it. Her words were, " He'll probably laugh and tell you to go home " . That didn't happen. Once we were over the initial shock, we just felt grateful that we did in fact catch it and are able to treat it. Maddie has had her band for one week now and she's adjusting beautifully. Whatever therapy you choose, band or helmet, I wish you the best and assure you that you will have unlimited support with this group. Guest guest
Ann, We are in Lawrence. Where are you? We go to RDA this afternoon, in fact; did you just have to give them all the $$ up front? That's what they're expecting from us! How was it? Did you feel good about the people there? I've heard from our OT that they are great but I'm still nervous. RDA doesn't work with our insurance directly (we have CIGNA) so we'd had the cranialfacial Dr. working on it, but CIGNA has denied twice. We're going ahead with it and hoping that they come through in the end (but I've been told by CIGNA they'd NEVER approved a band.) Wish us luck! Guest guest
Ann we all have pity partys, sometimes everyday but feel hgappy, your ped referred you and you can treat this, most of the time the ped is the one to get in the way of treatment. I hope your son is young enough it will make a big difference. Check out the cranial tech site for info on how to deal with the insur, Q and A, although it is for the DOC band and not a helmet you can apply the same ideas. This is not cosmetic! Guest guest
Small world, isn't it? We'll have to get together sometime. How old is your son? I'm glad to know you had a good experience with RDA. I've been nervous about it all day. I hope it goes well. Why is it $1000 more here than other places? I'd noticed that, too.... Who is YOUR ped? We see Vernon (family practice). She is fantastic. She got us PT right away for our son's torticollis and as far as the plagio, she's been very supportive. 's flat head and assymetry are only partially caused by torticollis; his occipital lobe on one side didn't develop like the other side did so his skull didn't grow there and that was partially the problem. actually has so many other problems health-wise that we've been dealing with those and the crooked head has been the least of our worries. We had discussed options with Dr. V and had just kind of let it go because I didn't think it would do any good if his brain wouldn't grow. Anyway, there has been some growth recently and our PT and OT brought up the idea of the helmet so we pursued it. And here we are. (Sorry, didn't mean to ramble.) How is your doctor with this? Let me know if you want to meet.... Wendi >Oh my gosh, we are in Lawrence, too! How nice our two helmet-heads will >not be alone! Have you seen that the band in KS is almost 1000 dollars >more than inTX? RDA was great! You will meet Bob the orthotist and he >was very friendly. We did the med-cash option which gives you 90 days >same as cash pending insurance approval. They said at RDA that BCBS has >paid for some bands. Who is your ped and what was his/her demeanor >toward your child's plag? It reads great, very official...Kimry
