A good rule of thumb is to get your carbs in at breakfast to jumpstart your metabolism after your body has been in an anabolic state - you don't want your body eating at your muscle for fuel. Lately I've enjoyed 2 slices of turkey bacon and one egg on a thinwich to get carbs and protein in at breakfast. Plus it's yummy!!  Also, the carbs from veggies Noel doesn't count those. Those are freebies. It's the carbs from grains you need to watch. Of course the complex carbs are better for you than the simple ones. Hugs!

Guest guest
When I'm doing an 8-10 mile run the simple carbs are best - so I have sports beans at the mid point (jelly beans with electrolytes and B6 vitamins in them but regular jelly beans would work too) because you need the sugars right away to fuel your run, as you are using the glycogen up quickly. A carb crash is NOT fun, I've almost past out teaching Turbo Kick on an empty tummy and saw stars, etc. One of the many reasons I love to run - you get CARBS many runners have pasta parties the night before their race the next morning, and after a race you typically get bananas, bagels, oranges, and other yummy treats. In Portland we get beer usually as well, since we are a state that makes many microbrews. GOD I LOVE THIS SPORT!

Guest guest
I do have to say, I agree w/ you. Yes, you should avoid junky carbs - candy, cakes, soft drinks, foods high in simple sugars - but fruit, veggies, whole grains - those are GOOD for you. They have fiber, vitamins, minerals, and water to fill you up. My DH does the low carb thing for a few months - loses weight, can't stand it any more, goes back to eating "regular" food and gains all the weight back plus more. When he had the most long term success it was when he read labels and watched portion sizes. He got away from that, blamed carbs for all his weight gain, but this week had a revalation that he eats 1,000 calories worth of nuts every day - so he is back go pre-measuring his serving of nuts. Gee, is it carbs or the extra 1,000 calories a day that caused the weight gain??? And, he will eat junky carbs when he goes back to them - so AARGH! Take care!Donna Subject: Re: / carb intakeTo: exercisevideos Date: Saturday, October 8, 2011, 6:59 AM so .. Guest guest
I'm not saying carbs are bad, it's just better to have them in the morning when you will burn them up, otherwise they get stored as fat once your glycogen stores are replentished. I know I'm fat from carbs. That's why I'm going to have my pesto torellini before hitting the Sweat Shop today LOL I do have to say, I agree w/ you. Guest guest
That is a good point and, I will also add, certain carbs (for me anyway) are easy to over eat b/c the portion sizes are typically half of what you would serve yourself - for me, I can eat a lot more rice and pasta (even the whole grain varieties) than is a typical serving size. I think that may be one reason why people gain weight w/ carbs. A 1/2 cup of rice or 2 oz of pasta is a lot smaller than you would think! Guest guest
No kidding the 1/2 cup brown rice and 1/2 cup yams are my favorite part of the Diet, but alas that's all you get most Asian restaurants give you 2 cups of white rice with your meal. The good news is, veggies are carbs too but you can have as much as you want because the energy it takes to digest them makes the total calorie count next to nothing in many cases (as I grab a carrot stick)

I journal all my food and I never count my veggies. I do my fruit though. It seems like fruit (certain ones) have more calories, especially the ones I eat almost everyday. I still wonder if I should count my fruit since my body NEEDS it. ~
Guest guest
Yeah, I would count the fruit because it's sugar. Natural, good sugar, sure but yeah.... again, better to have in the morning or right after a workout. All of this is easier said than done of course. I still need to lose 30 lbs. UG. However, I'm getting more and more motivated lately to stick to it.
