Hi Klara,

If you are the only one who understands it has all been worthwhile.

Thanks,

Simon

" let her be right " - that's funny - to me it all sounds wonderful - still, I wonder if others understand.

In mb philosophy there is the concept of 7 levels of judgment - I think you're way up there on the highest level, to see the whole picture - it takes work to get up there - so the rest of us will have to work.

Hi Reg,

The reason I ask is that, correct me if I am wrong, but I imagine the chance of someone changing your beliefs on food or circumcision are pretty small – non existent? Where do you stand on abortion etc?

This is human nature. So far I have never met anyone with a belief that you could talk to and he or she would give up that belief and suddenly agree. You think you are right and that’s fine – other people think they are right and you think they are wrong too – which is also fine. But don’t you ever question the point in all this. If we think in terms of right and wrong and have beliefs where does it take us if we cannot accept other people’s choices – disagreements, arguments, upsets, fights, war?

I understand you think that because you are right you should voice your opinion in the hope you will change the world, and of course so does everyone else who has chosen a belief and then we end up with millions of people shouting from the roof tops trying to persuade each other to change their strongly held beliefs. And that would be great if it was all a fun game but not many people seem to be able to play without feeling upset when faced with alternative opinions.

The reason I keep going on about this (this is the last time – I sure people are getting bored with this) is that for me it is a very similar situation to the point Wister made about people fighting for animal welfare and then going off and eating a chicken sandwich. Macrobiotics is a philosophy that also encompasses food. It is not just a diet. I perfectly understand people starting macrobiotics simple to loose weight or improve their health and I would be more than happy to support them in this without bringing up the philosophy. But after a while I would hope the more serious students and practitioners of macrobiotics would move on to explore the philosophy on which the food is based and try to at least understand it even if it is not possible to live it.

I have a slight fear that macrobiotics will get watered down to a Hollywood version where it is no more than a health food diet with a few Japanese ingredients thrown in and a little bit of yin and yang. Reg if anyone could save the integrity of the movement surely it is you. Why don’t you join and me and help us reintroduce macrobiotic philosophy to a hungry world and live the dream. In exchange I’ll let you be right on all your pet beliefs.

Love,

Simon

Simon,

I KNOW people around me think I'm nuts, I know they think how I'm

raising Marlie and the decisions I make for her future are

ridiculous. These are also the people that feel diet has nothing to

do with illness, etc. I don't really care what others think as I

have to be the one confident in my decisions for MY daughter's

future. I just had this discussion with my brother the other day,

instead of fighting with my family I've told him I refuse to defend

my child rearing ways. I just kept repeating it every time he

said " but what about........... " . It worked and I can sleep at

night. If I didn't have a man half way around the world to speak to

keeping me up half the night I'd sleep a lot better. ;)

UK time difference is so much better than 14 hours!!!! LOL

The difference between what others may view about my decisions and my

points on circ are that I am not causing my daughter physical pain by

slicing of part of her genetalia without any numbing agent.

Hugs,

R

My next oldest sister after me is a literalist when it comes to the

bible and a rightie in politics whereas I'm more the

buddhist/shintoist/hinduist spiritualist and a leftie. I send her

things that I read/get in email, and she sends me prayers and other

Biblical literature relevant to the moment. We used to fight

passionately about Bush, the war, various items in pop

culture, etc, etc, but now both learn and grow from getting along.

It's so much more fulfilling to accept each other for who we are.

Yes Klara it is an interesting question whether to focus on the quality of the relationship or stand up for what we think is right. Some relationships can actually thrive on discussion and amicable disagreements (like R and me!) but I think these are rare and for me I would always try to put the quality of my important relationships first.

All the best,

Simon
