Guest guest
My daughter did this for several years but doesn't do a lot of it anymore at age 14. Our therapist/psych dr wasn't too concerned ,saying this fantasy world was a 'safer place' for her and that's why she liked it so much. My daughter usually did it in her bedroom when others weren't around though... mari -----Original Message-----From: Bruce Sent: Monday, April 14, 2003 8:51 AMTo: autism-aspergers Subject: HELP How would you respond to this??? E's focus teacher sent me an e-mail stating that E carried on an imaginary, silent conversation using gestures, animation, and facial expressions while in her room. I discussed this with E, and he said that he was thinking of a way to describe something in his writing. I explained to him that other people would think that this behavior was weird or strange and that he probably should not do it any more when he was in a public place. Perhaps you could also discuss the situation with him when you are talking about his day.

Guest guest
ann, I can't help you with the child care issue since I am in San . I can pass on to you that I took a year of FMLA to help my son. I waited about 8 months after diagnosis, had our doctor fill out the leave slip and then packed up my personal items and left the school district I was working for. After a good year off helping my son, I was able to return to the same district but chose a different position that was more flexible with hours. This leave was unpaid and could have been taken for less than a year. This is the same act my husband and I used after each child was born but that was for only a month of leave. My understanding is that they do not have to hold your position but they do need to have a similar one available if you return within the leave time. Hopefully someone like Jeff Sell or another knowledgeable person can clarify this for you. I was just hoping to ease some of your concern. This is a big transition for all of you. I wish you the best of luck, Theresa in SA > 1) Does anyone know of any child care in the Texas City, TX area? > (north of Galveston and south of Houston) 2) Christian's mother called us at 3:30am last night stating that if we wanted him, we could have him, if not, she was going to put him in an institution b/c she just couldn't handle this anymore. Christian's father and I do not have child care and wanted to know if FMLA (family medical leave act) would cover his father to leave work to take care of him, in order to find out our options. > Thanks for any info. ann

Guest guest
After my daughter was on medications she went through the same problem. I did not like the medications they gave her to help her constipation so I did what my dear old grandmother told me to do and it worked. I snuck in 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of sweet oil in my daughter's chocoate milk since she drinks it all day long. I did this right before she went to bed and she had soft stool the next day. I did not have to do this every day but I did this every time she started getting constipated again. After she was prescribed Paxil, the constipation problems went away since one of the side effects for Paxil was diarrhea. However, for my daughter she never has had that but it has softened her stool and made her very regular (thank God!). Good Luck, CL

Guest guest
You may try old fashion mineral oil. I used to give that to my SI younger daughter. She was constipated not from meds but from refusing to go and would interpret BM as very painful however they looked normal. It did not matter how much fruit, veggies we gave her, she would continue to hold the BM for days and miserable. It is only recently she can go to the bathroom on her own. Mineral oil helped us at least to initiate a BM pattern w/her but it took alot of praise and coaching. Lots of ASD kids have SI issues that may effect toileting- plus constipating meds only add to the problem. I only learned that recently after attending a conference and after months of struggling. Cod liver oil may be option too w/ benefit of extra vit A but you may want to get that at a HFS. Good luck Jeneane

Guest guest
Dear Corinna, Is Garrett under the care of a psychiatrist? If so, call the good doctor and state that you are afraid for your son (use the suicide word if you have to) and need an appointment ASAP. Explain that your son was discharged from the hospital but that you think he is still extremely ill. I'm afraid that one of the many problems with our mental health system is that the doctors who treat inpatients aren't usually the ones who follow up after the patient's discharge. This gap in care causes the doctors in the hospital to think that their job is done, and the regular psych. thinks that if the patient was discharged, then he must be better. Doctors don't like to second-guess each other. Another problem is that hospitalization is so expensive that most places medicate a patient until he is seemingly better and then ship them out. Your son probably needs a lot of therapy in addition to medication. After being put back in the hospital, he was discharged and then sent back to middle school? From your description, it sounds as if your son is not ready to be back in school. Why not more outpatient or partial hospitalization until he is truly better? You may have to fight a bit, but it would be worth it. Remember, you are his mom and you are the only real expert on your son. Trust your instincts and demand that he be treated further. I don't want to be alarmist, but suicide rates among teenagers are very high, and your son is at risk. Remind his doctors of this - that may set the alarm bells ringing. They will probably act, if only because they are afraid of lawsuits (sorry that sounds so cynical, but it is what it is) Let us know what happens! in NV
Guest guest
Hi Corinna, Is he sleeping much at home (vs school)? I'm sorry this is dragging out so much, ((hugs))! I have lots of " maybes " : Maybe the meds haven't had a time to really work/settle in yet. Maybe the meds aren't quite the right dosage each. Maybe he's irritable since he's not feeling well/normal yet (if meds making him sleepy, etc.) Maybe with all he's been through - and he is suffering depression - that he's just frustrated, feeling down about himself & what he is having to deal with, embarrassed, the " why can't I just be normal or why do I have to deal with this? " type grouchiness and doesn't want to talk about it or doesn't want to act like things are normal as right now & recently they haven't been for him. Just saying he might be dealing with a lot internally. Which you know and as parents we want to help but they don't want to let us in. Maybe if he's the same for the next couple weeks - well, how would he feel about going back there? How long has it been since he's been off all meds? I would think the hospital personnel would work with the family on what to expect when " patient " comes home and how to handle/act around them. If they didn't, I would call, tell them you are very concerned and explain and ask them for guidance. And don't take " no " for an answer or any answers that are no help. Go up the ladder to administrator or whoever if need be. Please keep us updated on you and Garrett. Even if he doesn't want to hear you, I think I'd sit him down, talk anyway about how you worry about him, you can't just guess accurately how he's feeling, that you wonder....this/that...he might get grouchy and not want to hear it but he *will* have heard it so if you're not paying attention to him he'll know why (you felt he wanted to be left alone) and if you are paying too much attention, he'll know why, etc. Even with supposedly typical teens (moody, emotional years), it's hard to know how to handle their emotional ups/downs and how to respond (they seem to expect some certain response from us parents). > > I don't even know where to begin. Garrett was in the hospital for > two full weeks. Then he started an outpatient program. He was in > that four about two days and went back to the hospital for another > week. After completing a full week in the outpatient program, he is > now home and back to his middle school. I am very concerned about
Guest guest
, a few months ago I looked like I was pregnant too from the lipodystrophy. My doctor told me that the belly is a sign of insulin resistence. So it made sense to me to go on a diet that was made for people who have diabetes, even though I don't have diabetes. It worked! My belly is much much smaller now. Everyone is commenting on it. It's such an easy diet for me. The book that I recommend to you is "The G.I. (Glycemic Index) Diet" by Rick Gallop. For a more detailed book on the same diet, you can also looked at "The New Glucose Revolution" by Jennie Brand- et al. In about 3 months I went from a size 10 pants (to make up for my belly size), to my normal size 8. The book recommends exercise too, which I do by walking on a treadmill and doing light weight training. I swear by this diet. It should help with cholesterol and triglycerides too because of the elimination of sugar and eating healthier fats. I can't wait to see the results of my next blood tests. I will post them in here when I receive them very soon. I will not eat any differently. I hope that you give it a try. My best to you,
