Guest guest
Thank you Jeff for the info. I have heard of that but never heard it called the " leaky gut " . I am going to read more about this gfcf diet though I am not sure what I can do about my son's diet. He is so extremely picky. Right now all he will eat is french fries, pizza, eggs, baccon and weinies (and a few other small things that can't be considered a meal). I have tried to get him to try new things but he will literally vomit as soon as it hits his tongue. It isn't that he is spitting it out, he actually vomits a significant amount. Much more than just the small bite I managed to make him taste. I have given up trying to get him to try new stuff. I hope by him seeing it on my plate he will try a bite eventually. Any suggestions on this or is this normal? Is anyone using the PECs system. Picture Exchange System?? If so how does it seem to be working for you? My son's school has just started this with him. I am wondering if other parents are doing this and if they are having any verbal progress with it. Gosh this is sooo wonderful to find a group of people to talk to. I have so many questions and so much to say but I will wait and not bomb-bard everyone with a big novel... lol Another quick question... why all of the sudden is the media interested in autism? Why hasn't this been important before now?? Just wondering. Huggz, Christi Dalton -- Re: Help I called the manufacturer of " Iron Kids " and it indeed does not contain Casein or dairy. My son was diagnosed 13 days ago w/ PDD and we eliminated dairy the following day. Im still finding things that I missed in some foods like whey but he at least 90% dairy free and Im working on 100% CF. I realize that i am going to have to go GF as well but im am trying to gradually reduce these items and have begun doing so. Ultimately once I learn the ropes he will be 100% GF and CF. But we have noticed improvements already. His eye contact is more consistent (lasts longer), his stools have improved, his stim play has decreased (he seems to be playing w/ his trains and such normally.) Im no expert but for example he used to just go in and out of the tunnels over and over but now its all around the track etc. He is mumbling a lot more and the other day he took a doll and actually played like he was feeding it!! Im curious, should i have my son tested somehow to make sure that this diet is necessary? I obtained hi shot records (vaccines) and discovered that a lot of the shots did contain Thimersol. I am pretty sure that he has a " leaky gut " but who can I see that can help me to know for sure? Any advise? Mika McGough wrote: > > Are you trying the gf/cf diet? Guest guest
I am new to the group and I have a 6 1/2year old son who was diagnosed about 3 years ago with autism. I have actually gotten more info from the groups than any professionals. They all act like everything is a big secret. I was wondering what " leaky gut " meant. I live in the Commerce area if there is anyone else from there or nearby. Thanks, Christi Dalton -- Re: Help I called the manufacturer of " Iron Kids " and it indeed does not contain Casein or dairy. Guest guest
Hi Christi: Welcome to the group. The leaky gut or LGS is a poorly recognized but extremely common problem. It is rarely tested for. Essentially, it represents a hyperpermeable intestinal lining. In other words, large spaces develop between the cells of the gut wall, and bacteria, toxins and food leak in. The official definition is an increase in permeability of the intestinal mucosa to luminal macromolecules, antigens and toxins associated with inflammatory degenerative and/or atrophic mucosal damage. If the gut is not healthy, neither is the rest of the body. It is the point of fuel and nutrient entry. If healing is at a standstill look at the gut to see if this is the block. Chemical sensitivity, fibromyalgia and escalating food allergies are among the many problems caused by the leaky gut. If gas, bloating, abdominal pain, indigestion, alternating constipation and diarrhea are symptoms, irritable bowel syndrome may not be all that's going on. Hope this helps. Guest guest
Christie: One more thing--Here is an article that discusess " leaky gut " . Hope you find this helpful. Peacefully, Jeff Sell Hitt * * Sell 4309 Yoakum Blvd. Suite 2000 Houston, TX 77006 (fax) www.HittSell.com JZSell@... (office) jzsell@... (home) (cell/v-mail) www.vaccineinjury.org *************************************************** 'Leaky Gut' and the Gluten- / Casein-Free Diet Written by M. Edelson, Ph.D. Center for the Study of Autism, Salem, Oregon Another popular intervention for autism is the gluten-/casein-free diet. Thousands of parents throughout the world have placed their children on this restricted diet and have observed dramatic improvements. As a result, many recipes have been published in specialized cook-books, newsletters, and on the Internet. Leaky gut.: Many autistic individuals have tiny holes in their intestinal tract, and this is often referred to as ‘leaky gut.’ There appears to be many reasons for the problem of ‘leaky gut’ in autistic individuals, such as a viral infection (e.g., measles), yeast infection (i.e., an overgrowth of candida albicans), and a reduction in phenol sulfur transferase (PST; which lines the intestinal tract and protects it from leakiness). There is also some speculation that heavy metals in the intestinal tract can lead to an infection; and this, in turn, can cause ‘leaky gut.’ As far as treating these potential causes of ‘leaky gut’: Viral -- There are no drugs that can destroy viruses in the body but there are anti-viral drugs that can 'slow down' the virus. Candida albicans -- Many children have tested positive to candida albicans overgrowth and have been treated with anti-fungal medications (see section on candida albicans in this issue). Low levels of PST -- Some parents give their children Epson salt baths to increase levels of PST. Children are also receiving metal detoxification procedures to rid their body of excess heavy metals. Gluten and casein. Gluten is a protein and is contained in the grass foods, such as wheat, barley, rye and oats. Casein is also a protein and is found in dairy products such as milk, ice cream, cheese and yogurt. In the intestinal tract, gluten and casein breakdown into peptides; and these peptides then breakdown into amino acids. At the present time, we do not know why the gluten-/ casein-free diet helps many autistic individuals. One popular theory is that when gluten and casein are broken down into peptides, they may pass through the small holes in the intestinal tract. These peptides are termed gliadinomorphin (breakdown of the gluten protein) and casomorphin (breakdown of the casein protein). Both peptides act like morphine in the body. They can also pass through the blood-brain barrier and have a negative impact on brain development. As stated earlier, the most popular treatment for this problem is to place the child on a gluten- and/or casein-free diet. When placed on a diet, children, especially under 5 years of age, should not go ‘cold turkey.’ That is, if all gluten/casein food ingredients are suddenly removed from the child’s diet, this could lead to ‘with-drawal’ symptoms, i.e., a worsening of the condition. , Ph.D., a parent of an autistic child who is actively involved in disseminating information on the gluten- and casein-free diet, suggests that young children under age six years should be placed on a trial diet for three months to see if there are any improve-ments; and children who are six years and older should be placed on a trial diet for six months. Some people suggest that the health status of the child’s intestinal tract should be examined first; and if there is evidence of a ‘leaky gut,’ then the child should be placed on a gluten- and/or casein-free diet. The intestinal permeability test is one way to determine whether a child has a ‘leaky gut.’ This test involves drinking a sweet-tasting solution and then collecting urine samples afterwards. Most physicians can administer this test. Parents have also sent their child’s urine samples to laboratories to test for the presence of abnormal peptides associated with gluten and casein in the urine. However, some people feel that these tests are not necessary and suggest that one should simply place the child on a restricted diet and then observe whether or not there are any improvements in the child. Guest guest
question about Leaky Gut..... Once your child is on the CFGF diet for " X " amount of time does his intestinal tract heal? Is the " leaky gut " fixed? Can they then go on w/ normal diets? Is it possible that once the leaky gut is healed (if possible) could they then be cured of PDD symptoms? Guest guest
Ms. Bellows: We sure hope so. Some experts say " yes " , some say " maybe " . I think the jury is still out on the question. Maybe Mika can add to this? Mika, you out there babe? As far as cured goes, I will never give up hope that a " cure " will come along for Ben and Joe (my 8 year-old autistic twins). I think it is safe to say that a number of kids have improved so significantly, that the diagnosis of ASD is removed. Lastly, if you are married to Mike, have him check his cell phone voice mail--I just got back to the office and returned his call--we have been trying to talk for a couple of days now. Guest guest
That is great. They had started the pecs with my son before but the speech therapist was not consistent in what she was asking of him. He became confused and started new bad behavior like banging his head oh the floor and slapping himself in the face. I took him out of the school for the rest of the year and started him in private speech therapy for a full year. He was only 3 years old when we first started him in school and we were still in denial that he really had autism. Dan, (my son's father and now my ex-husband) would not believe that anything was wrong. His family tried to convince him that he was just slow to talk and that he would " pull out of it .. I knew it was something more but was pulled between Dan and the professionals. The professionals wouldn't answer my questions where I could understand them. It was always abreviations and terms I had never heard of. I even ran into two different, supposedly highly respected pediatricians, in our area that wanted to turn me into to social services because my son wasn't potty trained and not talking. They acted totally clueless about autism. Seems like it has been a real fight to get anyone to help or understand. Maybe it is because we are in a small town. Gosh I can really get distracted in my stories... Back to pecs. Well after a year of private speech therapy, we had to stop doing that because we had spent every cent we had to pay for it and still we didn't see any results. At age 5 years old we decided to put him back in school but I was much stronger and had accepted it at that point. I made them explain things and if I didn't feel good about something I had no problem saying it. I had just left my ex-husband and filed for divorce. I was on my own and ready to be my son's advocate. School is going pretty well but when I saw the biggest change was when I removed him from a daycare in town that he had been going to since he was 2 years old. In one week they had lost him 3 times. My son is just mildly autistic (that is what the professionals say) and pretty easy to take care of. He tends to want to be left alone and isn't very demanding. After putting him in this new daycare we are finally getting him potty trained, he makes a lot more eye contact and is making a lot more progress in school. There is nothing special about this daycare except their main focus isn't on themselves, it is on the kids. The workers there have kids in the daycare and the lady that watches (my son) the most has a child that has some special needs but not as noticeable as 's. She is so patient and caring with . It is amazing the change that we have seen just from moving him. Though maybe he was due to start making progress, I don't know but we are really tickled. So anyways, other kids in the class had been using the pecs and my son had seen them using it. The teacher said one day he went and got another boy's book because he hadn't been using the pecs so he didn't have his own. He had evidently watched close enough that when he picked up the other boys book, he knew what cards to place where and said the words to get what he wanted. They immediately started him with his own book and he seems to be doing pretty well with it. I have a child on the way now. I am 6 months along and really worried that this one may be autistic too. I try not to think about it too much. My current husband doesn't have any other children. This one will be his first His sister had a lot of disabilities and special needs. She passed away several years ago. (my husband now) is really good with and seems like the first man that isn't afraid of him. Seems when you mention that your child is autistic everyone thinks they are a monster. They are Angels " to me. Gosh, sorry for writing too much but I don't know a single other person with a special needs child. At this point, I have no other friends other than family. When I did have a few people that I would call friends they couldn t understand the joy I had with my 5 year old son could say cookie or he learned a new word. He has limited speech but it is getting a lot better. We are still of course a long way from being caught up but I am really pleased. I always tell him how smart he is and to me he is really smart. I am soooo proud of my son. Just delete this email if it is too long... lol I will understand. If this isn't what this list is for just let me know. Guest guest
Christi, My son and I will b taking a two week PEC'S class this summer, July 15 - 26 in Wilmington, DE. He has mastered the limited PEC'S training our consultant can provide and her recommendation was for us to attend this PEC'S Camp. My son used to have constipation and diarrhea simultaneously and what I know now, it could have very well been an obstruction which could have been very dangerous. It appears to have cleared up with the GFCF Diet, secretin infusions, bovine colostrum. My son's leaky gut and candida albicans were confirmed by an endoscopy (if I remember the info correctly). The endoscopy was not able to confirm celiac sprue disease because my son had already been gluten free for over a year. I had a gluten casein urinary peptide test done by The Great Plains Lab because I wanted proof, not for myself because I have seen great gains in my son, but, for my son's non DAN doctors. It was a waste of money, time and effort because all they could say is that they did not have any knowledge of the GPL. Guest guest
I cant get my machine to get rid of that sent by delineation so I will respond above your pertinent (to me) comments. Josh is an angel. I am quite sure yours is an angel too. Some autistic kids have mental retardation but many don't. Josh is above average intelligence. A person might not see that when first seeing him but it takes little time to become aware of it once one is around him. His parents are both highly intelligent but I sometimes think I see a glint in his eye that says on the absolute IQ scale he may be a bit beyond both of them. I think there may be a genius locked inside that autistic brain. But even if not, it is clear he is as intelligent as his parents. And it is likely that your son really is smart and not just " to you " . He picked up PECS when he wasn't even being directly taught. He is bright, very obviously. ly it is our government, in cahoots with the drug companies and covered for by the medical community, that is mentally retarded. Or maybe, just plain stupid. I prefer that angle to the other angle, in which our government et al. cruelly, evilly, on purpose, did this to our children. That is just too hard for me to take. Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now. Anyway, if this isn't the list for this, I would like to know which one is. Sure this list is also for networking and learning, as it should be. But it is, to me, also support in a fight that is fought mostly without the big help, one person at a time. We come together on lists like this so that we can be bundles of sticks, much stronger than we are one by one. Terri Seems when you mention that your child is autistic everyone thinks they are a monster. They are Angels " to me. Gosh, sorry for writing too much but I don't know a single other person with a special needs child. At this point, I have no other friends other than family. Guest guest
I have his evaluations and on know on one of them it states that he likes the computer and should continue working on one. But I don't currently have a Dr. for this specific condition except the one provided by the school and we want see her until August. That is something else I need to find a good Dr. familiar with autism. Because the one I use for well visits almost cringes when we come into the office, because Noah is so hyper and sometimes aggressive. So if anyone knows of a good Dr. Please let me know. I did call his caseworker at MHMR but she was already gone.
Guest guest
Sndy@...: Where do you live? I'll see what I can do. Peacefully, Jeff Sell Hitt * * Sell 4309 Yoakum Blvd. Suite 2000 Houston, TX 77006 (fax) www.HittSell.com JZSell@... (office) jzsell@... (home) (cell/v-mail) www.vaccineinjury.org HELP I am looking for some help. My son loves to play on the computer and guess what, mine just crashed and I cannot afford a new. Does anyone know where I can get one maybe donated or how about getting MHMR to cover the expense. I hate to sound like this but there is no way I can afford a new one. I'm know my credit is shot to heck since I lost my job last year and have not been able to pay my credit cards that I cannot get one. Or if anyone knows any other that I can get a new computer I would appreciate it very much. Not only that he uses it but I also do and there is a chat coming up tonight between 9 and 10 and I will not be able to access it. I will be crazy without one because he will be terribly upset. Guest guest
I don't know where you live - but in County - MHMR - In-Home and Family Support - has a grant program that you can apply for - and you can get funds to purchase a computer for your son. You have to have documents from a therapist and your son's doctor stating how the equipment can help your son....... If they don't provide services in your area - they may be able to direct you. A while back - there was a post on this list about being able to get one piece of equipment for free - I'll try and hunt that post for you...... Guest guest
I am from Houston, and I know a guy that donates used computers to kids. I will call him on Friday to find out what his requirements are and if he can help you. I know you will get a computer for your child. Don't worry. There are too many caring people around to not help. HELP I am looking for some help. My son loves to play on the computer and guess what, mine just crashed and I cannot afford a new. Guest guest
I live in Kaufman, TX Kaufman, County it is about 25 miles southeast of Dallas. I am trying to find a good Dr. now. I was using my IHFS for secretin injections but that became to costly and would not cover very much so I stopped that. I was considering using the funds for speech and occupational therapy. He only receives that now through the school district which doesn't happen during summer break even though he is in ESY for 2 times a week for 2 hours. So I also need any help locating a good Dr. familiar with autism and therapists also, if anyone knows of any. Please I appreciate the help.
