Hello,

On the CV of a doctor from France, directly underneath his name, is

" Sumatologie " followed on the next line by the name of his hospital. I have

never heard of sumatology and Googling does not help. This is a fax, but the

print is very clear, so I can't imagine what else the word could be. Any

ideas? FYI, it is definitely not " Stomatologie " .

Thanks,

Hi

Although somebody ruled it out, it si obviously STOMATOLOGIE

It is a fax, and well printed, but what about a typing error ?

Somatologie = no such speciality

Hello

My initial reaction was to assume that somatology referred to the area of

psychology that interprets forms of physical disease as a somatisation of

psychological problems (as per the King's College / Institute of Psychiatry

school's attempts to redefine - and monopolise research into and treatment

of - diseases and conditions ranging from ME to Gulf War Syndrome).

However a Google tour turned a number of references that show the term

being used in a more humanistic way to describe the field of holistic

medicine and natural therapies (and much more narrowly to signify the study

of beauty and skin-care).

Is either of these relevant to the rest of the doctor's CV?

All the best

Owen

Hi :

(where in Canada are you?)

Just to confirm Owen's message, I found this in Dorland's Medical

Dictionary:

somatology => the sum of what is known regarding the body; the study of the

anatomy and physiology of the body.

The term is also listed in Stedman's Alternative Medicine Words.

HTH,

Ursula
