Guest guest
I thought of something last night that I hadn't thought about before. I've not been eating a carb at my last meal of the day and sometimes I dont' have a carb the last 2 meals of the day if I feel like I've pushed the carbs earlier in the day. I'm wondering if I should be taking in some extra protein since I'm not getting those calories in... or should I just let it be? Lana P.S....... Guest guest
That's a good question. I would think that you would want to make up the calories with extra protein since it seems you'd end up in a calorie deficit for your BMR. I find that I am sluggish for my workouts in the am, especially HIITs, if don't have my carbs with my last meal. But I'm no expert. Dianne sometimes I dont' have > a carb the last 2 meals of the day if I feel like I've pushed the carbs > earlier in the day. Guest guest
Lana, IMO you should eat 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight (not lean weight; total bodyweight). As well, if you want to enhance your fat- burning, you shouldn't eat carbs till the last 1 or 2 meals of the day. That way your insulin isn't elevated as much. Insulin is a necessary evil because it transports sugar-energy when needed, but it also stores fat. Andy > I thought of something last night that I hadn't thought about before. Guest guest
I should add, too, that the body can't generally handle more than 50g of protein per sitting. Andy > That's a good question. Guest guest
< Could you further explain why you think the carb increase should be at the end of the day? > Sure. When you eat carbs, you elevate your insulin. Anything eaten in the presence of insulin is *more likely* to be stored as fat than it would be otherwise. However, eaten at the right times, fat is *good* for you (even some saturated, believe it or not). This is why, generally, BFL has you cut down on fat and buy " low fat " versions of so many foods - because you're always eating carbs and thus cannot afford to be eating fat along with the carbs, cuz it'll be stored as bodyfat. I eat virtually no carbs for four meals of the day (i.e., just fat and protein [mostly the " good " fats, but also a moderate amount of sat. fat]), then have a BFL-style meal the last 2 meals of the day. This is a modified version of the Natural Hormonal Enhancement eating plan. If I were *strictly* on that plan, I'd be having low-carb for several days in a row, then a couple end-of-day meals with *unlimited carb calories*. However, by doing it the modified way, it's a little more convenient, and I *don't* have unlimited calories when eating carbs. < My thoughts are that if I eat them earlier in the day, I'm more likely to use them as energy and not stored as fat. > Your body doesn't care when you eat them. You'll be set for another round of fat-burning and working out after you've slept off the insulin surge at night. < I am diabetic so insulin spikes are my life. LOL > This may change the picture. Are you Type I or Type II? (My brother's Type I, so I can't expect him to eat like I do; he's gotta listen to his own nutritionist.) Guest guest
Thanks for jumping in, Sara. I never mind hearing your opinion. I was just discussing the science of insulin, how it works, and how to manipulate it. The standard BFL eating plan *is* a MUCH healthier way of eating than the average N. American eats these days. However, as good as BFL eating happens to be, it's scientifically optimal. However, there's a little overlap between BFL eating and the points I raised. That overlap is this: when Bill tells you to wait for an hour after eating, he's telling you that so that the fat-burning effect of your workout will be enhanced. Now what would be wrong with eating right after your workout? Why would that detract from fat-burning? Answer: is assuming you're eating a carb portion in that meal, same as in every other meal. Therefore, even though he doesn't discuss the science behind it, he's tacitly acknowledging that elevated insulin is contrary to fat-burning. I've simply carried that through to its logical conclusion: we don't need as many carbs as we think we do, and we can enhance fat-burning by eating carbs in only the last 1 or 2 meals of the day. Is BFL's 40:40:20 healthy eating? Yes. Is the *best possible* healthy eating, according to the scientific research. No; it could be improved upon. But it's quite convenient for the masses, and that's why BFL is more popular than some other plans. Guest guest
Hi Sara.... Thanks for the advice... and I agree. I really like the simplicity of BFL and intend to stick with that eating plan throughout the rest of my life. The reason I've cut out my last carb of the day is because it's often close to bed time and I didn't want that carb sitting in my stomach (turning to fat) during the nite. This has been suggested by eas on their helpline so I thought i'd give it a go. Reduced energy due to one less carb a day hasn't affected me (I did an experiment with/without last carb of the day and couldn't tell a difference in my workouts). Anyway... I'm not hip on the idea of moving all my carbs to the end of the day. Andy.. I eat one gram of protein per day per LEAN body weight. ly, I'm not a small woman and I have alot of lean mass (I might end up having to LOSE muscle in the end) and I have no desire to eat that much protein. That's understandable. The 50g of protein limit-per-meal is the key number here. Best wishes, Andy

Guest guest
Hi, Mike. NHE is the best compendium of fitness science research I've ever read. BFL is popular because it's pretty effective for lots of people and it's very simply laid out. NHE is in my opinion superior because of the detailed scientific backing. You can read more about it at http://www.extique.com/nhe.html. Write me off-list and I can send you a couple of brief MSWord files. Best wishes, Andy > Actually, I'm very interested in NHE. Guest guest
I wonder if it would always be wise to eat 1 g per lb of body weight? Let's say someone weighs 450 lbs and they have 200 lbs of lean muscle mass. You are telling me they should eat 450 gms of protein per day?? That sound like too much and is more than they could process in 6 meals, right? Common sense tells me they need to eat enough to maintain their muscle mass and that is based on lean body mass.
