Welcome ,

Your symptons sound like asthma to me. I was not diagnosed until I

went to an allergist and he gave me some tests....breathing etc. I

went for allergies and found out that I had asthma. I did take

allergy shots for two and half years, which made me feel better but I

still had the same triggers and began to learn what they were.

Think about going to a allergist. Wouldn't hurt.

I found out that sinus trouble, acid reflux, allergies all go along

with asthma.

Hope you feel better soon.

Have you had pulmonary fuction tests? What are you doing when the symptoms start? do you smoke? Lotsa nosy questions to see if we have answers! If you dont feel good and they cant find anything wwrong that does NOT make you a hypocondriac...Boy do I know all about having the drs have a hard time finding out what is wrong! Hang in there!

hi lisa,

i've run into the same exact problem. i started going to my doc in janurary of '07 and at first he did a spirometry test that was normal and he gave me albuterol inhaler and singulair said exercise induced bronchospasm then it continued to persist and get worse at times , i discovered more triggers he did more tests to rule out other problems ,peak flow numbers were normal and alll tests were normal but i still had problems...finally in july 0f '07 he diagnosed me with "allergic asthmatic bronchitis( this is asthma but he still hasn;t said, i have asthma) in october'07 i called the office and told them my asthma symptoms were getting worse and i needed to be seen, he gave me advair, i did fine until right after thanksgiving, got a respiratory infection was back and forth to see him from nov. until feb '08 in dec '07 he changed me to symbicort which is working well at the higher dosage. i did kinda ok for a few weeks then

allergies took over i added zyrtec to my army of meds i went in for my 3 month appointment and told him i'd added zyrtec and then he said allergy tests, which i did and eventually allergy shots the shots triggered my asthma and he added prednisone for a week i'm breathing like a normal person for the last 2 weeks!!!! persist in asking questions of your doctor a diagnosis will come!!! i think the biggest challenge is finding the right combo of meds.

Hi ,

Could you have a magnesium deficiency?

Magnesium deficiency can affect virtually every organ system of the

body.

.... one may experience chest tightness or a peculiar sensation that

he can't take a deep breath.

I have had the test many times where you breathe into the big machine,

in & out, for as long as you can. Then they give you the inhaler and

you do it again. My dr. says I am not severe and have at least 80%

lung function. But I have flare ups and go on prednisone about 2-3x a

year, usually change of season, and I had a major attack after a cold

2 yrs ago and was in the hospital for a week. That was the first and

only time and it scared me so bad I had panic attacks afterwards. I

feel like I live in fear a lot of the time since then of having

another severe attack. I do not smoke and never did, but grew up in a

house of 2 parent smokers. Right now I take Asmanex 1 or 2x a day

depending on how I am feeling, and my inhaler as needed. I am afraid

to take the stronger combo meds also (the ones that say they " increase

the risk of asthma-related death " ). Thanks for your support!

Thanks for your reply. I am on Asmanex 1-2x daily and proventil

inhaler as needed. It seemed to be working well for me until recently,

besides the few flare ups where I need to go on a short course of

prednisone (usually change of seasons). I have allergies as well but

don't take meds for them unless they are really bad. I hate taking so

much meds.

Thank you. I have had asthma since I was 13 but it had always been so

mild and controlled with an inhaler when needed, I never thought much

of it. It did not start getting bad until a few years ago. I was in

the hospital for a week after a cold triggered a severe attack 2 yrs

ago and that is when I learned how serious of a disease this really

is. I've not seen an allergist but I do have allergies too. And after

my recent experience with severe heartburn/reflux I just found out

about how that factors in too. I am finding it hard not to overfocus

or be fearful the worse it all gets as I get older (am 36 now).

Hi Alana,

thanks for your reply. I like to think I eat healthy but I would never

say it's not possible. I haven't really had any of the other symptoms

here but the chest/breathing thing and also, the lump feeling in the

throat! But my drs think that was due to the reflux I was having after

taking the prednisone. They found stomach inflammation at the

endoscopy as well. In any case I don't think it would hurt to try

eating more sources of magnesium and I searched for a printed out a

list. At this point, I will try anything especially if it doesn't

involve more meds and tests!

Thanks,

Hi again

Yep the big machine is the PFT. I dont know if you said this dr was a pulmo dr or your primary care dr? Personally I would find a new dr! Of course i say alot of things that I just dont do! It does not sound like your asthma is very controlled.Do you use a peak flow meter? How do those numbers measure out? I too worry about the next 'big' attack. You say you are afraid of the heavy drugs. I was too, but have recently begun Advair 50-500, and Spiriva. After 3 weeks I am starting to get my breath back<ok I have soem other things that make this differernt but, ust saying I understand the drug thing> I actually spoke to my dr about it in depth, because my mom died suddenly at 34. The black box warning on Advair was written because of an increased risk of death in African Americans who were coming off of long term oral steroids and starting inhaled steroids. Since I am not AA and was not on LONG term pred, she said it was safe, well as safe as an med

can be. I recomend you talk to your dr about finding some better meds..and consider the heavy hitters if you are not in the high risk categories.

hope that helps..I am 31 and just started all these huge problems myself so I know it can be overwhelming!

Hi, , I think our bodies become more sensitive and doesn't cope as it once would, that's whyI keep asking my for my 25 year old body back, it didn't have all these health issues.I am 38 an also hav GERD which they believe has gotten to the Barretts Esophagus stage, no surprise there, cancer runs through my father's family like a horrible whild fire taking them out one by one. i also have what they are calling a Thyroid cancer and that prevent me from being able to swallow my food the right way. So look like they will schedule to take that out before the summer is over. I just want to be back to feel good again. Right now I'm trying to bounce back from havng all 4 wisdom teeth removed this past Friday . The one socket still bleeds but as long as I have my

handy icepack by ACE REUSABLE cold compress Im in tood shape, that and Motrin. I've pretty much swirtched over to motrin from Vicioden. My uppper left tooth root was in the sinus pocket, and that ruptured during the surgery, He said it COULD happen and I already knew about it so Now it'sjust time to sit back and heal and take lots of naps!

BTW,Welcoem to the group. I'm Terry W from MD

This is my pulmo dr. I didn't actually ever see a pulmo dr until after

my hospitalization. My dr's take on the heavier meds was that people

with severe asthma was taking them and dying because they had severe

asthma, not because they took the med. He does not feel my asthma is

severe, although at times it will be better or worse. He is not

opposed to putting me on other meds but obviously he wants what I

want, to be on the least amount of meds possible to control it. This

is probably the longest period of " worse " I have had since I started

seeing him. During this period I also had the reflux so it's been hard

for me to tell which is causing what symptom now. I really appreciate

your input and understanding Anita!

Oh, I forgot to answer about the peak flow meter... I do use one at

home...kind of obsessively lately too. I tend to hover around 400,

give or take a bit. On a good day I can get up to 450. More often

lately it's been 350, or between 350-400.

Out of curiousity, what is everyone else's numbers like?

My average is actually pretty good - 500-530. That is, of course, assumung that you use the same scale as the EU scale! I was told that when it drops to 400 that is when I need to get medical help. However, for my flatmate, 400 is good. My asthma is reasonably mild, and I am otherwise pretty fit. Even so, I guess 500 is pretty good, given that the doctor told me that for my age and height, my average would be around 450!

I understand about not seeing a pulmo dr until late. I actually dont have an appt for the first time with one til next week. Seems some dr's just dont use them as much as others. I agree, less is more with the drugs! I have no interest in being on all the crap I am on, cept I like to breathe now and again! Reflux is a huge trigger of asthma. What meds do you take for it? if you can find a good stomach med you may find that your asthma calms down considerably at the same time! Good luck!

Mine stay around the 500 mark, right now due to all the medication and pain it's in the low 300's but I was expecting that,so I treat accordingly. HoweverI bet I could get higher if I could get my mouth open wider, I can use but a baby spoon to get food in so it's jello, pudding, finely cut up spag, and yogurt I ahve been so tired today, thank heavens the family hasn't felt the need to visit me today because Ilook horrid, my left side of my face is so bruised and swollen, not exactly in a mood for visitory well except for all you guys of course LOL

It's funny because my regular dr would ask about my asthma and if I

felt I needed more control. I always said No, because my asthma was

" mild. " Then it nearly killed me 2 yrs ago and I started taking it

very, very seriously.

The reflux is a new thing for me. I've had stomach inflammation

before, a long time ago, and the occasional heartburn, nothing severe.

But after my last course of prednisone I started to have terrible

burning in my chest, no appetite, had to sleep sitting straight up.

Later, the feeling of a lump in my throat that would come and go. I

was on Prilosec and then Nexium for a while. My dr said that now

whenever I need the prednisone, I will have to take one of those along

with it.

Have you had that lump looked at? They have a strong suspicion that mine in cancer, year found that out Friday morning before I went under (Had to call the dr's office about calling me in some yeast infection pills due to taking "2" antibotics at once" my left upper wisdom took was impacted into my sinus cavity and it ruptured the membraine, so yes one more antibotic. IF it doesn't heal in 3 weeks I have to go in for major surgery, maybe I'll getmy ENT to that that Thyroid out while she's in there already. I didn't think my typing would last long, I'm messing up already ,If you don't mind me asking where to you live?

You sound so much like me its funny! Guess must be the asthmatic 'story'! I had an attack in Jan lotsa pred later I ended up in the hospital for my stomach...After I get out dr says we need to get this asthma under control, I said I am more worried about my belly...she was not impressed! Fastforward to June..in for asthma which she hospitalized me for, out three days later back in a week later for the belly...So finally she says PULMO..GI dr...hahah the gi dr was a quack! Anyway...I am on oemprazole..even though my EGD was clear because she wants to see if it helps..whatever!

oh my best number for PF was 400, it has been well over a month since I have blown that..I am happy right now to be able to blow about 325-ish..who knows~

oh my dr said I have to take oemprazole with my pred too..didnt save me though! still ended up in hospital...

I did not know that they had found your lunp in your throat to be cancer. Why are they not acting on that right away?

Glad you are recovering from your surgery as well as can be expected!

Re: Another newbie here!

Thank you. I have had asthma since I was 13 but it had always been somild and controlled with an inhaler when needed, I never thought muchof it. It did not start getting bad until a few years ago. I was inthe hospital for a week after a cold triggered a severe attack 2 yrsago and that is when I learned how serious of a disease this reallyis. I've not seen an allergist but I do have allergies too. And aftermy recent experience with severe heartburn/reflux I just found outabout how that factors in too. I am finding it hard not to overfocusor be fearful the worse it all gets as I get older (am 36 now).> >> > Hello.
