I was reading about the voucher program in Ohio that (on paper

anyway) sounds really innovative. Something about students in low

performing schools can get a $5000 voucher to attend the private

school of their choice. It was not limited to Autism though.

The more I read about Ohio's education law, the more I understand

what could be contributing to them not recogizing HS as a private

school. I do understand how what you read can be vastly different to

what actually happens, so the the following assesment of mine is

novice at best! Please feel free to correct me if I got it all

wrong!!! ;) I got the info below here:

http://downloads.ohiobar.org/conres/lawandyou/Law_and_You_012.pdf

I read about how Ohio can transfer funds to educate a student from

one district to another under something called a consortium. States

require payment from one district to another if one district is

providing education to students under a consortium. A consortium

consists of various districts that have legally banded together to

provide educational services at a central location. Many consortiums

are formed to provide services to special education students who

require specialized services too costly to provide in each different

district. A district may send a special education child to another

district, or a private school. So from my feeble understanding,

under Ohio law, if homeschools were considered private schools, they

would have to start writing big checks to individual families. As

much as I'd love to get a check, it might not be practical, and bad

people could take advantage of that system. In Texas HS may be under

the private school umbrella, but we are not allowed get funds under a

consortium.

I'm not saying it's right, but maybe it's not about being " against

homeschooling "

I did pull up the state autism scholarship. Wow that is amazing! I

could not figure out if the " private entities " to provide for the

students were homeschools or what. As much as I feel for parents who

have children with autism, it is sometimes irritating how much

assistance is granted for that diagnosis when there are others with

just as much, if not more need. BUT, it does show how well organized

that group is in getting stuff done.

(Sometimes they have students who can provide therapy under the direction of

their

professors(Danny has sessions with a college student who is majoring in

Communicative

Disorders (speech therapist student) He has 1 hr sessions with the student(and

her prof)

for free.

Students need hands on learning, so it is a good thing for them, too.)

I love this! I'm all for new teachers, new therapists, etc. I think they bring

fresh new ideas

and so much enthusiasm. And knowing your therapist is under direct supervision

of their

prof. is just a great situation. We are near UNC Charlotte, I should see if

there are any

programs like this for us.

How did you go about finding your student/therapist?

Someone I knew told me about the program last year. But I first

got the idea from Burke’s father. gave a speech for a college

group in our town several years ago, and his dad was with him. My husband and I

asked Mr.Burke how long had speech therapy when he was a child, because he

spoke very well. Mr. Burke said that he and his wife just took to the

local university and asked the therapists there if they would work with

Chris..and they did, for free. Said it worked very well for them.

And? I am not saying that premarital sex is ok, but plenty

of kids who have ‘good moms’ who did not work still got pregnant

out of wedlock. What I think is good about this is that they are demonstrating

true pro life qualities. I am sure that it was a real heart breaker for her

parents, but they didn’t throw her to the wolves or force her to abort or

give the baby up to spare them embarrassment. And I have know of parents who *say*

they are pro-life who have encouraged/forced their child to have an abortion or

give the child up.

At least this puts to rest the slimy rumors about Trig’s

parentage.

Actually- I think that a mom can still be a good mom and have a 16 year old get pregnant....but I do think that many parents today are too busy to parent their children. My oldest daughter has friends whose parents let their daughters date at 12 and let them have boys over when they are not home. I am not saying that this happened in this case- but that teens having babies is a national problem.

I really feel sorry for the Palin family- it can be tough to be in the limelight.

You know, my aunt was a Christian stay-at-home mom who was very involved in her daughter's life, but my cousin got pregnant at 15. It was a shock to all our family, and my cousin did not get married. She did raise the baby, and he's a young man now. I only work part time because I feel it's very important to be involved in my kids' lives, but that doesn't guarantee anything. I still think my aunt is a very good mom. :)

So the message you want to send to all the working mothers out there

is that they are ruining their families. Working mom's everywhere

should stand up and take notice that they are neglecting their

children and families. If you continue to work, your unwed

daughter's will become pregnant and your developmentally disabled

children will waste away without proper therapies.

I thought the democratic party was all for supporting the working

mom's of America? Now they are bashing in for it?

I wonder about the father of the child. Does his mother work?

What is really sad to me (but not surprising, actually) is how

NOW and NARAL are blasting Gov Palin. The groups who are supposedly all about “empowering

women” are showing very clearly that all they really want to empower

women to do is terminate pregnancies at will. Feminist groups have been very

vocal in their demands that a woman be in high office…but now that a

woman has been nominated, we are hearing from every side that a woman with kids

should not be in office…which is a real switch from what has been said

about women that the radical feminists approve of . How do they expect that

people will not notice the hypocrisy of their remarks?

Gee... So Palin is a member of the human race and has the same the struggles as the rest of us... what a shocker. ;-)I am not happy that she is dealing with a pregnant teen, but the measure of person is in how they deal with problems, not IF they have any. This same story is heard over and over and it doesn't matter what kind of family the child comes from either.I have witnessed some very strict Christian Families go through worse 'fire' and still come out fine in the end.She is pro-life and seems her daughter is as well. The only thing that would make think of ill of them is to hear she forced her dd to have an abortion or tried to cover it up and give the baby away. They have chosen to take the high road and it's a tougher road, and honestly, makes me like her MORE.

There are no guarantees in life. Our children have wills of their

own. A 17 year old is no longer a young child that can be protected

and kept from unwise choices. Once kids hit those teen years it

becomes very difficult to control their behavior. We hope as our

children go out into the world they will hold onto our teachings and

values, but that does not always happen, and they make mistakes.

To blame the parent for the choices an almost grown child makes is

not a good thing to do. That finger of blame could turn around and

point right back at those throwing the stones.

Getting pregnant before marriage is as old as the human race!! I am

not saying it is ok but it is a fact of life. Most people have

family or friends who were expecting before they were married.

Especially in the society we live in today. These things happen to

the best of parents and the worst of parents. At home moms and

working moms. Christians and non-Christians.

Plus, this is a none issue compared to the disgusting sexually

immoral president we had in the 90's! Yucko!!

Unlike Obama, who says he does not want his children "punished with a baby." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNzmly28Bmg

My gosh! That is an insult to mothers everywhere to say that (weather a pregnancy is unexpected or even expected) a baby is a punishment? A child is a miracle in every sense of the word, and something to be cherished and celebrated.

What I don't understand, and I realize she is not running for office - her husband is - but Obama holds a very demanding position, and her daughters are quite young. I haven't heard anyone say anything negative about her working. Do they not care about her daughters? I guess there's always a double standard to most things.

What I don't understand, and I

realize she is not running for office - her husband is - but Obama

holds a very demanding position, and her daughters are quite young. I haven't

heard anyone say anything negative about her working. Do they not care about

her daughters? I guess there's always a double standard to most things.

I'm the product of an un-wed 17 year old girl!

And she was pregnant back in 1960, so the world doesn't change so much...only the fact that I would have been aborted if she had known what an abortion was..illegal or not. She just didn't know what one was till later when the whole Roe vs Wade thing got press.

There are no guarantees in life. Our children have wills of their own. A 17 year old is no longer a young child that can be protected and kept from unwise choices. Once kids hit those teen years it becomes very difficult to control their behavior. We hope as our children go out into the world they will hold onto our teachings and values, but that does not always happen, and they make mistakes. To blame the parent for the choices an almost grown child makes is not a good thing to do. That finger of blame could turn around and point right back at those throwing the stones. Getting pregnant before marriage is as old as the human race!! I am not saying it is ok but it is a fact of life. Most people have family or friends who were expecting before they were married. Especially in the society we live in today. These things happen to the best of parents and the worst of parents. At home moms and working moms. Christians and non-Christians. Plus, this is a none issue compared to the disgusting sexually immoral president we had in the 90's! Well it won't change my vote.. Just makes me feel more akin to her.

My daughter had a secret boyfriend at age 17 & 1/2 . She got pregnant with her first child LITERALLY on her 18th b day. She is still with the guy.. who is 26 yrs old ( 6 yrs her senior). Unmarried.. and with a second child.

But Its not cause she did not know what causes babies. As she was with me when I delivered all 5 of her siblings etc etc blah blah. Its that she was at an age we could not ' legally" control her anymore. And yes, people do need to make their own mistakes.. but she also new we disapproved of this boy.

One interesting thing to

note…

About 42 years ago, a young 17

year old mother found herself unwed and pregnant.

She named the child Obama.

And he referenced that when he told the press that Palin's family, especially children, are off limits. On Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 12:25 AM, Dinkins-Borkowski wrote:One interesting thing to note… About 42 years ago, a young 17 year old mother found herself unwed and pregnant. Yeah, he said that when he told the press to back off. I am

hoping that everyone can take time to remember that most families have ‘histories’,

and deal with this news accordingly. Teen pregnancies are not something that

most parents hope will happen to their kids, but I really do think that the

Palin family (and for that matter, Obama’s mother) are dealing/have dealt

with this the best way that they can…continue the pregnancy and move

forward.

I have family members who got pregnant before they got married.

One continued her pregnancy, and the other didn’t. And the one who didn’t

regrets it to this day (and it was over 35 yrs ago)

So far, none of my kids have gotten pregnant or gotten anyone

pregnant…and they were raised to know that premarital sex was not right…but

there are no guarantees…that could very well be me walking in Palin’s

shoes right now,,,so I appreciate the way she and her family are reacting to

this.
