Lois,

Let me see if I can remember these from memory. We do 10,000 IU of

Vit. A/ and 400 IU of vit. D per day (we did high dose A years ago and

it had a DRAMATIC positive impact for Tom, so I always try to keep him

on A). Also, 50 mg. 5htp (more than that can make him even more

hyper/stimmy/silly), vit. K, vsl#3 (a probiotic), 40 mg. zinc, zyme

prime enzyme with every meal and candex (for yeast) at night. He's

been on a ridiculously strict diet for years and years, but we have

lightened up on it periodically just this summer to no ill effect (that

we can tell - still breaking the diet only once in a while).

We started bh-4 (it's a supplement but you have to have an rx for it)

last spring and it *seems* to have really helped the meltdowns

aggression. He has only had one meltdown (no aggression) since we

started it (so scared of jinxing myself by writing this down!).

For meds, we do spironolactone, which is good for inflamation and

supposedly kids who have the ACE deletion (genetics, per Yasko and a

contributor toward aggression). We tried the spiro last fall and it

seemed to bring on aggression, but we were within a month of another b-

12 trial at the time, so that may have messed up what we were seeing.

Tom has been on the spiro for about 2 months now and so far so good.

The rilutek is the last new thing we are trying this summer. It blocks

the production of glutamate, which should help calm him down and help

with behaviors. Other things we have tried to balance glutamate (like

gaba) have been awful for Tom. But, again, so far so good with the

rilutek. I don't really think it has calmed him down, but he does

seem more " involved " with what's going on around him.

It's hard to tell with his behaviors, because school will bring on the

meltdowns / aggression more than anything at home (but during the bad

periods, we deal with it here too!). But, like I said, he was doing

great even at school last year after we started the bh-4.

I'm a nervous wreck thinking about school starting in Aug. Tom will go

to middle school this year, so new school, new teachers, new

everything - yikes! If we're not out of the clear with these

behaviors, I'll know it the first week of school.

HTH. There are so many stressful aspects of autism, but IMHO,

aggression is the WORST!

kicked out of two appartments, wow, very stressful! I have had the best

luck for my daughter with aspergers, with abilify and strattera, she

is 9 and even says she feels less angry. She was on risperdall and

did good, but we went off because I was afraid how bad the weight gain

side affects could get, when we tried trileptal she was so super angry

and agressive,it was at the end of the school year and she was

suspended two days in a row,two differant issues and that has

improved so much.I would keep looking for the right balance of

meds, you family cant continue to function this way and your son is so

frustrated with whatever imbalance he is experiancing.good

luck...

Most health food stores carry it, or you could order on line.

When we first did a high dose vit. A protocol, I gave 400,000 IU over

the course of two days (I think, it's been a while). Most mainstream

docs would say no way to this, but the theory was that the measles

virus uses up vit. A, and this would get vit. A stores up again in the

body.

Tom is a MMR regresser - high fever and measles rash 10 days after the

MMR at 14 mo. old, and he's never really been the same since :-(.

Anyway, the high dose vit. A brought him right out of a regression and

he was going to the park, making friends, really aware and happy. It

didn't last (most of the stuff we do helps for a while and then fades

or things get worse). I would repeat the high dose A every 6 months or

so and always got a nice little boost. Now, I just give him the 10,000

IU every day.

I hope that helps. I think most of these kids are probably depleted in

vit. A. Most things (even multivitamins) only have carotenoids as a

vit. A source and the body has to convert it to vit. A. I doubt most

of our kids do the conversion very well, so a fat soluable vit. A (as

long as the child can handle it) is probably a good idea.
