Guest guest
We started my 7 y/o with HFA on Adderall Monday morning. He has good focus for about two hours but then very whiny, easily upset, crying etc. Yesterday was worst. The Doc said to stop it and to try Geodon. I gave my son one pill before bed last nite as prescribed. This morning he was sooo hyper, bouncin goff the walls. Could this still be a reaction from the Adderall crash? Is hyperactivty typical with Geodon or does it take a while to work? Doc said it's like Abilify, which we tried in the past but Abilify mello'd him out immediately..... I left him at school today and he was bouncing off the walls. I have to work f/t otherwise I would have kept him at home. I did not expect this reaction. Any feedback is appreciated... Thanks! Guest guest
Because Konrad was put on Geodon and Straterra at the same time and Karac became very aggressive, it is hard for me to know which caused what. I would think that about 20mg. of Geodon alone would be very calming. Pat K************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
My 9 year old son also is on Geodon and Strattera right now. He has also just started Wellbutrin. I really want him off all these medications, but with no help from the prescribing doctor. We go back on July 16, so hopefully I can get somewhere with her. ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Moody friends. Drama queens. Your life? Guest guest
, how much Geodon and Strattera is your son on? How long has he been on them? Why do you want to take him off of them? Guest guest
My son is on 160 mg of Geodon and 78 mg of Strattera and 150 mg of Wellbutrin. He has been on both the Geodon and Strattera since October 2006, gradually increasing the dose and he was just put on the Wellbutrin a few weeks ago. I want him off of the medications mainly because his behavior hasn't changed, for the better. He screams, hits, kicks, bites and throws terrible tantrums. So bad sometimes that the neighbors complain. All I have been told is that this is going to get worse before it gets better. How much worse? How long do I have to endure the hitting, kicking, screaming and biting? He has a picture schedule, time timer, MRDD working with us and in home behavior specialists. Nothing is working. I am at my wits end. I had my mom and sister come and pick him up yesterday and they took him to my mom's house for 2 weeks. Mainly to give all of us a break and to keep us from being evicted. We have already been kicked out of 2 apartments since September because of his behavior. We can't find a house where we live that is affordable. ________________________________________________________________________________\ ____ Get your own web address. Guest guest
. Karac was exactly the same way when he was on Geodon and Straterra. Fortunately, he developed TD from the Geodon, and he had to be taken off. He was on Xanax and Clonidine for almost a year afterward to get over the TD and withdrawals. He has been off of everything for a year and is the best he has ever been. So there is hope. Why in the world would the doctor keep him on that high a dosage of those two meds when it is not doing any good?? Why was he put on those meds in the first place? Is your son psychotic? I am so sorry. Believe me I know what you are going through. I'm only the grandmother, but I had Karac 24/7. Pat K ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
I would take him off of strattera and see what happens. Strattera made my dd very angry and mean. She had alot of rage on it. Guest guest
My son was also on Geodon and was developing TD so we went to Abilify- but my son is only on 8 mg. And its the best he's ever done. He was also on Adderall which made him aggressive, actually any of the ADD medicines made my son aggressive and mean. My only real complaint about the Abilify is the weigh gain and laziness- but that's also genetics too, so.... good luck. I was thinking the same thing about the high doses.... why so high?? My son is 182 lbs and only on 8 mg of Abilify. Why is your child on such high doses with no relief??? Adrienne ----Original Message Follows---- From: pkuenstler@... Guest guest
You can't take them off cold turkey without giving them something else. We gave Karac low dosage of Clonidine and Xanax to handle the withdrawal from the Geodon. After a year; he stopped taking any thing. He also learned to control his anxiety on his own by wrapping in his comforter or taking a shower or asking for a comfort food. He still will have brief periods of anxiety, but they don't make him aggressive because he knows what to do to calm himself. I'm so sorry. I know what you are going through. I have scars on both arms for when Karac was going through withdrawal. Pat K************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. Guest guest
Sorry it took me almost a week to respond. I have had a lot going on this week. The Doctor has kept increasing the dosage as his aggression gets worse. I guess she thinks that the higher dosages would help. We go back on July 16, so we will see what happens then. He was put on those particular medications because of a severe violent outburst at a Kroger store back in October. He was out of control and went to a Rescue Crisis center here in Toledo, OH. I don't believe he was initially psychotic, but I feel like the medication might be making him that way. We are seeing signs of Tourettes and possible Bipolar. This is so scary. Exactly the reason I kept him off of medications for nearly 8 years. You say he was taken off the meds. What happened/changed that made him not be aggressive anymore? My mom had my son at her house for a week, and Friday night she forgot to give him the medication and he beat her up and broke lampshades. I want him off these meds, because I don't think they are helping, but he needs something because he can't control his aggression without them. But on the other hand, he isn't a whole lot better on them either.
Guest guest
I am a very firm believer that sensory input would help aggressiveness. My son calms almost immediately when I apply joint compresssion, deep pressure, etc. Some times I simply just squeeze his arms intermittently and he LOVES it!He has never really been outwardly aggressive, so I cannot really imagine what it must be like, and I understand how it would be scary to take him off the meds once he is on. My son has his times when he gets VERY frustrated, and screams and pounds what is near...so far he has not pounded any person. I would have to agree that the meds add to the problem of aggression. My son is 16, and I have been on MANY different lists for "Autism". It has become pretty clear to me that the kids with aggression/violence problems are the ones on the meds that are "supposed" to alleviate these problems. Both times I tried these drugs for behavior/focus problems(Dexadrine & Rispedal) BAD reactions/side effects. I just can't see playing Russian/Roulette with my son anymore. Guest guest
I will agree with you (I've been in this game a long time too :-) that most often from what I read it's the kids on the meds that have the most behavior/aggression problems. But, just to be fair (and I am a HUGE believer in biomed, been doing it for what seems like forever), it was supplements that caused serious - SERIOUS - aggression problems in my ds. IV glutathione in particular almost had me calling 911. I wresteled with my ds for 8 hours, having to keep him from running away or attacking my other children (dh was out of town). Tom was a big strong 11yo at the time - I've never been so exhausted (mentally and physically!) Other forms of gsh, mb12, nadh, gaba, dmsa, dmps and some others have also brought out the worst in him. Usually these are delayed reactions (several days to several weeks after starting the supp), and they continue for several weeks after stopping it. We still deal with intermittant aggression for no apparent reasons, but I have to be so careful with what we try to help it. Often what works for most kids sends him in the complete opposite direction. Sally > > I am a very firm believer that sensory input would help aggressiveness. Guest guest
I wanted to update you on my son. I have written about some of the problems we are having with him, being on Geodon, Strattera and Wellbutrin. Well, this morning he physically attacked me. All I asked him to was not draw with his chalk. He was getting ready for daycare this morning and I didn't want his clothes messed up with chalk. I told him he could ride his scooter or play inside until I was ready to go. Well, he started screaming, punching me, pinching, kicking, pulling my hair. He pushed me down and pinned me down as he punched me in the head. My head hurts really bad right now. We called the police and his mental health case worker and they both arrived at the same time. The police put handcuffs on him and escorted him to Rescue Mental Health Center. He will be there for a few days. Hopefully his meds will be adjusted. Well, I want to rest now. Anyone have any suggestions?

Guest guest
Thanks for writing back. No, these behaviors aren't new. He has done these behaviors since he was little. But nothing gets through to him. He has been on Geodon and Strattera since October 2006, with dose increases. The Wellbutrin is new, he started that June 8, 2007. I just don't know what to do. He attacked my mom this past Friday night as well. Hurt her worse than me. I don't know what is going on with him. I will keep you all posted. > > > I am sssoooo sorry you and your son had such a rough time. Is this new behavior for him? new meds? Guest guest
I am absolutely no help when it comes to meds but I am sure others will have advice on that subject..I know alot of these meds induce rages in "some" of our kids...sigh...such a juggling act! Since he has had these behaviors for awhile have you tried any behavior mod techniques to help him decompress? You ( and your family) shouldnt have to live in fear. Is there any one you can ask for help? respite? intervention? Missy( with more questions than answers) Re: Adderall or Geodon Mess> > > I wanted to update you on my son. Guest guest
I have a behavior specialist from MRDD in my home at least once a week. I have a home based therapist and case manager from Connecting Point (which is the agency where his psychiatrist is located) in my home at least 1-2 times a week. I am working on getting an emergency Individual Options Waiver so I can get some respite. I can't get out to meet people to find respite providers for us. The MRDD in the county I live in, doesn't have any respite providers unless you are on a waiver. I get some family resource money, but we only get $500 this year and a center based respite is $200 per night. Since he attacked my mom as well (On Friday), she can't watch him anymore for me. Hopefully the Crisis center he is at now can help with the meds and treatment. I'll keep you updated. Thanks, > > > > > > I am sssoooo sorry you and your son had such a rough time. Guest guest
Thanks for replying. I am not sure what meds we would try next. We have tried Risperdal and Clonidine (at the same time), Ativan, Seroquel, Abilify, and I think there may be one more, but I can't think of it right now. It's a terrible thing to be afraid of your 9 year old. What upset me was that the police handcuffed him. I never thought I would see that happen, at least so young. > > , all I can tell you is that I had the same problem with geodon and > strattera. It took a year to get over it.
