Hi and thanks!! I'm 41 and single mom to 4 girls, ages 13-21. I will be a grandma for the first time in November. I was diagnosed about 31/2 yrs ago, and have not done treatment yet. Congrats on your HCV status. I have two friends who did treatment last year and both are doing fantastic also. Thanks for introducing yourself and making me feel welcome.

Welcome Kim, to the biggest craziest family I've ever been in. These wonderful people have saved my sanity on more than one occasion & saved my doctor's life more than that. There have been moments......

I'm SuZie spelled that way after SuSie joined us. I live in the Great White North, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada with my cat SpYke of whom you will hear more. He's a Himalayan (mostly) & the Galactic Overlord in Training. I'm single but have many brothers & sisters And from them, many nieces & nephews, I've even got a great niece! Oh yeah, I'm 55 now.

I was dx'd(dx=diagnose), I've been on tx (tx-treatment) twice with no response. I'll be trying again as soon as I get the results of my latest bx (bx=biopsy)

Tell us something about yourself. You can find short biographies of most of us in a file at the home page. If you have any questions, please ask. There's no such thing as a stupid question & someone here will find it for you - try Kathy-boo, she knows everything.

Again, Welcome,

SuZie & SpYke

Hello Suzie and thanks for making me feel so welcome!! I live in Houston w/ 1 tom cat and 2 teenage daughters. (HELP!!) I haven't started treatment (because of $$). I do understand what you meant about sanity. Sometimes, I feel like just screaming so loud that people could hear me 5 miles away. Sorry about the way the treatment has gone for you. You are much braver than me. Not quite sure that I want to go on tx right now, even if I did have the $$!!

Thanks Gail. I am looking forward to becoming a grandma for the first time this November. You are real blessed to have the treatment work for you so quickly. I just hope that I will feel like keeping up with the new grandbaby. There are times that I hurt so badly, that I just don't even want a hug from my kids. I feel bad about that, you know. My mom seems to think that it is caused from something besides HCV. Congratulations on the grandkids!! I can tell how proud you are of them.KimGail Deveaux <gaila@...> wrote:

Hi Kim, One great thing about Canada is our medical system, universal medical care. It doesn't pay for prescriptions but there are places you can apply for help. I'm on disability & they pay for almost everything, then there forms that your doctor fills out & they pay then. Have you tried the drug companies compassionate lines? They offer low or no cost if you can prove you need it, but if you're not sure that you want to try them when you make up your mind. I've had hep probably since 1970 was dx'd in the early 80s. My last biopsy said I had cirrhosis so treating was the only option really. I'm still here & so is the hep (damn it) SuZiekim still <kim_still1@...> wrote:

Kim,

money is certainly a big issue and (tx) treatment isn’t for everyone, but

I think anyone who has the opportunity to do treatment should give it a shot to

try & stop the damage to your liver. I figure there aren’t

enough livers to go around now, so there sure won’t be enough later on

when all the people that still don’t know they have HCV figure it out.

Just my opinion.

Hi Kim, Im pat and welcome to our wonderful nutty group..Im geno 1,stage 1, grade 2 & undetectable one year after 48 wks of tx..

I was wondering what was your reasons for not doing tx besides the $, Did you know that you have a higher percentage of beatin hep & lower chances of progression..when your under 50 yrs old....Correct me folks if Im wrong about this but I remember something on these lines..

Have you had a biopsy yet, do you know what geno type, stage and grade you are?

The pharmacuticals give the meds for free if you qualify..One of the most important rules is that you can not be drinking ..I stopped as soon as I came down sick in the hospital and never went back to it..Thank God for small miracles!..A Big miracle really...I drank all my life...

Congratulations on your family and becoming a granny for the first time in November,my Bday month!...its fun...I have one granddaughter"Teagan", Deb and Mel got to meet her..Wonderful to have you here...Hugs, Pat

I think it has more to do with how long you've had it. Both of my tries at tx were before I turned 50 but I figure I've had hep since 1969 or 70. I've had friends who've only had it a few years & they cleared on the same tx at the same time who were the same age as me. The only difference was the length of infection. I would advise treating a s a p. If I'd known then.....yeah & if my grandma had wheels she'd be a tea wagon.

Hi and thanks!! I'm 41 and single mom to 4 girls, ages 13-21. I will be a grandma for the first time in November. I was diagnosed about 31/2 yrs ago, and have not done treatment yet. Congrats on your HCV status. I have two friends who did treatment last year and both are doing fantastic also. Thanks for introducing yourself and making me feel welcome.

Congratulations on your family and becoming a granny for the first time in November,my Bday month!...its fun...I have one granddaughter"Teagan", Deb and Mel got to meet her..Wonderful to have you here...Hugs, Pat

the younger you are when you get it, the slower it progresses. If you’re

Welcome new member -- Kim Still

I think it has more to do with how long you've had it. Both of

my tries at tx were before I turned 50 but I figure I've had hep since 1969 or

70. I've had friends who've only had it a few years & they cleared on the

same tx at the same time who were the same age as me. The only difference was

the length of infection. I would advise treating a s a p. If I'd known

then.....yeah & if my grandma had wheels she'd be a tea wagon.

Hi Pat,

Have not had a biopsy or anything else done, just enzyme levels checked once a year. The levels are so very, very low compared to other people I know. My dr. at the time said that there is no big hurry on tx. Now, I changed jobs, and insurance companies. The waiting period is 1 yr, which will be up at the end of October. My new dr. wants to send me to a gastroenterologist then. I just know that I am a single mom, can't hardly pay all of my bills as it is, and really don't have the $$ to go to the dr. (It's a shame that I have insurance and can't afford to use it)!! My boss was going to start tx last year, but had to put it on hold, because her copay on the RX would be about $800 per month. After I found that out, I just put the whole tx thing in the back of my head. I realize that the pharmacuetical companies would help out, but I just don't have the $$ to pay for the initial costs up front (biopsy, etc). I

don't drink and haven't since about 6 months before I was diagnosed. I never was a big drinker anyway. I just had alot of symptoms and a real good friend encouraged me to go in for testing. She was right!! That's been 3 1/2 or so years ago. I was taking Milk Thistle diligently, but have gotten out of the habit. It's been a few months now, and I can tell the difference. If I could just learn to make some better food choices (fried foods and Texas just go great together--ya know) and get rid of some of the stress, I know I would not be so tired all of the time. Also, I think I'm afraid that I'll be so sick on the tx that I won't be able to work--and then how do I pay the bills and keep up with the grandbaby and teenagers? So, thanks for letting me ramble on and on. I feel better already. If anyone knows of any other solutions, let me know. Kim suzie

Hi Suzie,

My brother has a friend in Canada that actually works for the health care system. She says there are good and bad points about the program. But, it does sound better than what is here in the US, at least to me. Hope this next tx works for you. I was diagnosed around summer of 2001, but I know that it was between 1995 and 2001 that I contracted HCV. Talk soon, Kimsuzie <suzieandsandy@...> wrote:
