Guest guest
I think we are treading on marshy ground here. Saying fictional aliens are AS is kind of pointless. The main objection here is that they are aliens. How any of them act may be completely normal for their race and so have nothing to do with the human quality of AS. Odo for example is a colony creature, so his whole being, physical and mental, is very different from our own. The Vulcans are actually more like NTs who have forced themselves to adopt logic because in times past they were close to killing themselves off with constant warfare. Still, I think he would have been a better Captain than Kirk.
Guest guest
I've always felt that way about Data and Spock, though I'm not a Star Trek fan since the death of Data in that last movie. You forgot T'Pol from Enterprise, Tuvok from Voyager, and Seven of Nine from Voyager. I think that the entire Vulcan race would seem to have AS characteristics. I military aviation as well, the ground crews considered the planes theirs and not the pilot's. In fact if a pilot came back with a shot up aircraft, if the pilot himself was not hurt, they would often get a harassed by the groundcrews for abusing their machine. Guest guest
I'm wondering if a lot of authors are aspie? (not all of course), but it seems a nice solitary job for an aspie :-) well mostly - there is always the book signing things etc, but most of the time - being left alone to write - nice :-) Quite often in books I read I can spot aspie like tendencies in some characters (usually one of the main characters) and wonder where the author is drawing from for these characters? > > Bean and Ender do seem like Aspies, but I'd have to read the books > again with that in mind since I read them before I even heard of > Aspergers. Guest guest
Bean is for sure, Ender's leadership ability is not aspie but a lot is seems to be calculated which is Aspie... and Valentine (Ender's siblings) seem likely aspies too. I suspect that Card may well be. The protagonists in the Alvin Maker// books, Lost Boys, and many of his short stories all seem to be aspies. That or Schizoid which appears to be all but identical in behavior. As best I can see if you act aspie but aren't diagnosed aspie you're schizoid... I suspect schizoid personality disorder is a common way for aspies to deal with a world in which they don't quite fit. Another aspie... Klaatu from " The Day the Earth Stood Still " and the " Galaxy Being " from the Pilot for the original " Outer Limits, " (That I remember when it first aired dates me badly... but then again aspies have good memories.) Non-hostile movie " Aliens " in general... ET, StarMan, Kreton - " Visit to a Small Planet " (Old Jerry Movie 1960), Exeter - " This Island Earth " (although the rest of his Metaluna buddies were hostile or at least uncaring) That's is an interesting thing... that aspie behavior is considered alien, but when a alien acts aspie they are generally considered to be " good " ... Most people seem to fear and reject anything that is the least bit odd or atypical... they want every one to be clones of themselves... in effect an insect colony... that's sort of a scary idea... people as interchangeable parts to be discarded if they don't fix... Sorry I'm rambling... Guest guest
I was thinking of the books... Tolkien gets into their heads and the movies didn't... did a good job making a movie (one movie three parts... the book was chopped into three parts by the publisher to Tolkien it was one book with many parts) out of a book that doesn't lead itself well to the Screen. Many of the story lines were reduce or eliminated... Bombadill, the old forest, the twenty odd years in the Shire between Bilbo departure and Frodos, what happened to Saruman and Wormtongue, Sam as the ring-bearer and what Sam sees in the Mirror of Galadriel, what happened on the way back to the Shire and when they got there, Gandalf and Elrond are revealed at the end to like Galadriel be bearers of one other the three elven rings and a lot more... The book is vastly deeper than the Movie... Ok I have read it several time and have not seen the extended version of the movie but the extra hour or so there can't fix a tenth of the omissions. I won't go into the remakes of The Time Machine and War of the Worlds that like the earlier version have next to nothing to do with the books. The World of the Worlds movies are based on the Orson Wells radio broadcast. The movie version of the Marvel comic books are equally awful in their treatment of their source material... Somemore Aspies: Bruce Banner/the Hulk, and /Spiderman, Kent/Superman, Read s/Fantastic Four and his nemesis Victor von Doom/Dr.Doom (all aspies are good guys...) I'm rambling a again... that may be a good sign... I've be very depressed lately... Guest guest
I was thinking of " Trouble with Tribbils " and Kirk ordering to take shore leave when wanted to catch up on engineering journal and manuals... but that one episode that was not written by the regular writers... also " Wolf in the Fold " and " Lights of Zatar " (spelling?) There were also a few other instances where he tried to avoid having to meet lots of new people, even in the books. This made me think of Geordi, too - although it's partly his blindness, he's at least terribly shy and made some interesting blunders in his relationships and pseudo-relationships. Guest guest
-i think many authors, especially Scifi/fantasy and mystery, are AS,although undiagnosed. One of the things Aspies are known for is the love of lists, elaborate explanations and structure, and you see lots of that in those kinds of fiction. For example, Norman, author of the Gor series(one of my faves)will go on for pages describing alien weapons, laws, articles of clothing, etc. In college we had a joke that in the Gor novels,no-one could duel until all the weapons were completely described.
