Guest guest
Yay Kay! I'm so glad you finally go to hold ! I remember what it was like when I couldn't hold both my boys (Sam was 1 month old b4 I could hold him cuz of the respirator). Isn't it the best feeling? I'm so glad she's doing much better! I know what you mean about the baptismal dress thing. When you have children there are certain things that you take for granted, like they will grow up, get married, have kids, make you grandparents, etc. Maybe that's one reason I can't project much into the future for my boys (because when I do it hurts too much). Darn, now I'm tearing up. Said I was not gonna do that at work anymore!! Guest guest
I did the same exact thing with Maggie and Sara concernign baptism dresses. As for having another baby...I am doing it and I am scared. I am scared of another baby with Ds...I talked with Carolyn and she made me feel better, less afraid...I am super scared of twins again...could I do it? Will we go broke? But, in the end, God has a plan and all will work out. My husband and I are good parents and between us we have 4 degrees...we can earn money! Gotta go to preschool, Re: hair, genetics and conference > **I have always heard that its a 50% chance of a woman with ds > giving birth to a child with ds....Not 100%** > Amber : ) Fran; I am going to have to agree with Amber on this one again and also mention that Kay (I believe) was the one who was originally asking the question as to what the percentage was for a woman with ds to give birth to a child with ds is. Amber and I both responded with the answer of 50%. As far as I know there have only been one or two cases of a man with down syndrome being able to reproduce so I am assuming in answering 50% that the woman would be having a child with a man who does not have down syndrome. I asked Dr. Len Leshin what was the correct answer and here is what he said. If a woman with DS has a baby by a man without DS, then she has a 50% chance of conceiving a baby with DS, since half of her zygotes will have one chromosome 21 and the other half will have two chromosome 21s. However, since over 80% of all conceptions with DS do not make it to term, her odds of having a live baby with DS are actually lower. Guest guest
As for the age thing...I don't buy it anymore. I remember skipping the parts about Down syndrome in my baby books cause I wasn't 40! I am 32 now. I swear there are more Moms under 40 with kids with Ds in our support group than not. This may sound mean, but don't you sometimes wish one of these " older " celebrity Moms would have a baby with Ds. Think what it would do for Ds awareness in the world! Guest guest
You know ladies out there thinking about another baby....Adoption is a great thing. I was adopted as was my brother. They told my mom she couldn't have kids. Then at age 40 she had my sister! It wasn't so popular in 1975 to have babies at 40 either. According to a show Rosie Odonnell did a couple of weeks ago there are lots and lots of babies out there who need homes. Am I one of the younger ladies on the listserve at 32? I feel so old sometimes. I am the only one of my real real friends who have children so far. Guest guest
> may be terrible to think, but I guess I really felt sad knowing that > may never be able to experience having and raising a child of her own. Hi Kay; Key word there is " MAY " ....she may never BUT she MAY. Sorry guys but you can say I am still in denial or whatever but I have HIGH HOPES of our children who happen to have an extra 21 chromosome. will/can have children if that is something she wants later in life, even if it is through adoption. I know mostly likely can't even reproduce even if he wanted to BUT he can still adopt if that is something he really wants. If you go by Dr. Leshin's 50% figure plus take into consideration that 80% of all conceptions with ds don't make it to term, 's chance of having a baby with ds 'could' be approx. 10%.....not bad IMO and better then the 0% boys with ds are given for being able to reproduce (although I have heard of at least one case where a boy with ds did reproduce, the baby did NOT have ds but did not survive either). , mom to twins Nicala & ,ds (3) and (1)
Guest guest
Kay, My heart, too, is sad, each time I see Sara with her baby dolls. She is such a nurturing little girl. I will often find all her babies lined up all covered with blankies. She kisses them and gives them loves. The possibly " not being able to experience motherhood " thing is difficult to think about for our little girls.--I understand how you feel. Guest guest
My thought on celeb pregnancy's is that so many babies are aborted when it is found out they have DS that I wonder if that happens a lot among the celebrities--they abort before they announce the pregnancy if all is not perfect. Just a thought. Marcia Mom to Sara (DS) and 5 and Lucas
Guest guest
As far as you all are talking about age. I am in the young group myself I am 25. Soon to be 26. Hmmmm I know I want personally every have another child. I do want to adopted a family of children like 2-4 kids. Hubby thinks I am nut but I loves kids and have always wanted 4 kids so mabey one day I can have more. Time will tell one day. As far as my kids having kids. With both of them having health problems and all I am sure they would carrying over to another child wth DS and all if not I am afraid that will have more health problems. So I do not look foward to being grandma with out the option of adoption kids having kids. I am beyond cool with it. I wanted to throw in what I thought. mom to and Dayton ----------------------------------------------------- Click here for Free Video!! http://www.gohip.com/freevideo/ Re: births >From: shellhutch@... > >In a message dated 3/28/2000 1:11:20 PM Eastern Standard Time, >Sandds@... writes: > ><< Am > I one of the younger ladies on the listserve at 32? Guest guest
, I couldn't believe Landon had Ds either. I was only 32 when we conceived. In my training for my Special ED degree, we were always told the magic numbers of between ages 35 and 40. Ds wasn't a concern for me either. Plus with twins, I wasn't concerned at all because the only twins I knew about with one having Ds were on that Lifetime Movie. The geneticist told us that having twins increased my risk for Ds. Anyone else told that? He also told me that the risk increases with maternal age but 80 % of babies with Ds are born to moms around the ages of 28 and 32. The reason being that more moms have children at that age. Makes sense. I too also have the same thoughts abut celebrities but thought I was horrible to think such. When I heard Madonna was pregnant and I know she is 40 ish, the thought crossed my mind. No, I am not a Madonna fan and not so sure she would be the greatest role model. Just wanted you to know I think the same things. I wonder if some celebrities have aborted a baby with Ds because it is one of the most common disabilities and no celebrity with a child with Ds yet. Guest guest
, I thought the same thing myself when I heard Madonna was preggo! And when I found out Annette Bening was too. I believe she's " 40-ish " , as well. I've always wondered the same thing, why are there no " hollywood " celeb's going thru this. Surely it just doesn't happen to us " little people " (lol). However, about a year ago, there was a story in people mag. about Sally Field's son (I think he wrote a book or directed something....), anyway, they showed a picture of him and his daughter (who was about 18mos at the time), and to me, anyway, she sure looked like she had Ds, but there was absolutely no mention made of it. As with the celebrity mums I am sure they are tested to make sure all is perfect. They are in the limelight and perfect is the only way to be for them. Oneday it will happen to a celebrity. Her sister in law said she is in the high risk groups and she would have had the amio etc.She is 18weeks.I will find out this Friday as we are going to the same birthday party. I know what I wish................ easterbrook mum to kane 11yrs,Sian 8yrs(going onto 21)Skye(DS) and 6yrs.
Guest guest
, I would have liked more children after the twins but when I was told by my LOVELY dr that my chances of having twins triplets etc were 90% as I already had fraternal twins naturally without any assistance (except for hubby lol) .Plus with age as we get older we release more eggs each time.I already doubled my family once by having twins and knowing my luck I would end up with quads. If I knew I would have one I would have, but I fall pregnant when Neil comes home in between his 6weeks away.We used to see him once in 3weeks The DS did not worry me.With Neil the Ds was not the issue but the posssibilty of different health issues that we have not had with Skye and the fact that he is away and I would have to cope mostly on my own. I used to get clucky but that is slowly going. if you have twins again I am sure you will cope very well. Have they not sent you for a ultrasound? Guest guest
The only way I can see having twins increasing your risk for Ds is that you are having 2 babies not one. You know what I mean? Guest guest
-- I thought the same thing, exactly...how many celebrities were supposed to have a child with Ds in their forties, that the public did not know about because of termination. That makes me feel sad. Jean n and Dan's (ds) age 7 mom
Guest guest
Hi Judi - I know that one of the big c & w stars has a boy with ds who is about 6 now. Its the Diffe (sp?) guy I think. They showed a picture of his two sons in a video he made. Cute little boys. One is about a year older than the ds boy. Just fyi
Guest guest
Hi , Thanks for the reminder about Joe Diffy having a DS boy. He was in our town for a concert two years ago. A friend and I went to see him and I had read in a preview of him in our local paper that his son had Ds and it seems he had even written a song based on the special little guy in his life. Anyway, I felt very connected to him and loved his concert. Marcia Mom to Sara (DS) and 5 and Lucas
Guest guest
; If your in denial, then mine is even more severe. I studied molecular biology in school (ironic huh), and people have been filtering out eggs which contain a mutation for quite some time now. When an egg is made a " polar body " contains the half of our chromosomes that won't be used this time around. What couples who know they are carriers ( have one chromosome for the disease and one which is normal) for certain diseases (Tays Sachs and CF were the first ones) have done is used in vitro methods and analyzed the polar body before fertilizing the egg. If the polar body contains the mutation, then the egg doesn't . I've theorized why can't this be done to find the polar body containing the extra chromosome. I know this creates many ethical issues, but the girls will have the final say in what they want to do. The sad part is this method doesn't work on men. The process of analyzing the sperm would destroy it. Would this be helpful for translocation moms or too time consuming?....guess it would depend on that moms odds and type of translocation.
