Elaine- hi, she is eligible by diagnosis. I doubt we'd qualify for SSI

because we own our home, hubby makes 50,000 a year and we have stuff to play

with- old used stuff, but stuff none the less. I know all about the waivers,

my daughters DDS case worker says there isn't one, never heard of it. I've

heard a local medical university/hospital has them available for parents to

apply to have services covered...I don't really know what the deal is here in

Oregon. Deanna

In Georgia we have a medicaid program for disabled kids that are from

families making too much money to qualify for SSI. It is called the

Beckett waiver and I believe other states have this as well...

You have a great ESY services. Where do you live? I am going to move

wherever, or whatever it takes.

Here in Escombia county in Florida, ESY and related services are really bad.

What is " a summer habilitation program for spectrum kids "

I can't find a program or a servise that work for my daughter without

medicaid waver, which my daughter has been placed on waiting list for nealy

two years. In this county, a parent are asked pay for ESY. We chose

" community based progam " for her ESY this year ,but a parent have to pay full

cost.

Hi Lyn,

Yes, we have medicade waver program in Florida, but about 9000 people on the

waiting list, it will take 2-3 years or more to get developmental disablity

servise.

We were turned down for SSI twice. First time its because we had

property but didnt have a house on it so it was called an assett. Second

time my husband got a job april 23rd and I applied for SSI may 1st! We are

a family of 5 we make $42,000 a year. We did qualify when my husband was

in the service at $36,000 a year but only $85 a month but we only wanted the

medicaid portion LOL. Then we tried to apply for the model 2000 medicaid

waiver and each state has its own rules. Since my kids are so healthy we

were turned down. Now if they were physically disabled then we would of

been put on a waiting list! charlene

Here in Colorado model 2000 medicaid waiver is set up for the

physically disabled but mentally disabled are ignored!

What people do around here to get around things......

1. divorice yet the man still lives in the house illegally

2. work under the table only

3. Quit your job totally

I have ran into the same problems and find New Mexico has more to offer

I am very upset that my tax money is paying for people who know the

system and I dont yet I am not getting services. Now if I have hubby quit

job then he is bored and wants to spend more. Its a loose loose situation.

Oh ya but the state of Florida wants your tax money! I ran into the

same thing in southern colorado. The problem is local control. So the

state stays out of things and counties run things the way they see fit.

Some counties think disabilities need attention while others wished

disabilities were deceased! You can try to fight it using due process and

lawyers but then be so stressed and broke and maybe not even have time for

your little girl. Here in Colorado only thing catered too is low income!

I used to get jealous that most people here medicaid would get speech

therapy twice or more times a week while my son got nothing due to our

income. The speech therapy cost $165 on up and who can afford that.

Luckily we found scotish rites. Someone Iknow has a new house and car and

still gets SSI why because her husband works for his relatives and half of

it is under the table. I am starting to believe the saying when in Rome do

as Romans do! You can complain about this all you want but nothing will

change. You have to mold yourselves around the system! Once you learn the

system then its yours. I had certain choices....1. divorice my husband and

then he can still live with me illegally but then I loook like single parent

type. 2. Have husband quit job 3. have another baby which is

impossible. 4. Move

Medicaid kids (No offence to anyone who is receiving this benefit I'm just

remarking on the inequity of certain programs designed to help individuals

with disabilities and their families) are first priority. I don't think I

ever would have found out that they existed if I wasn't so persistant at

reading the paper, keeping my eyes open for brochures etc. I know what you

mean. No matter that having to bankroll everything ourselves is destroying

We started our own swim lessons through the Adult Ed Classes last school year.

They helped find a swim instructor and we (the Parents and Siblings) helped her.

It was a great great class. Next year we hope to add two more levels for

parents and the kids with an instructor that specializes in special needs

children. My wife and I did most of the work getting it started but we had help

from the Principal from the special needs school here in Des Moines. Now Deanna

swims like a fish when we take her swimming. The nice thing is even if there is

a big crowd (which she doesnt like at all) she still goes swimming. We still

swim with her thought. But she is getting much better.

Hi Here in Des Moines, Deanna's' summer school last 6 weeks. Monday thru

Thursday 8-12. The teachers are still required to teach as a regular school day(

just shortened) And Deanna loves to go. Bussing is also available to those

families who need it. She is currently in a class size of 7 kids with one

teacher and 3 associates. The classes are held at the local special needs

elementary school Smouse Ele. The district also has summer school for the jr and

sr. schools as well. Held at Van Meter H.S. for Special needs students in those

age groups. We also offer transportation to those students who work for the

Goodwill Industries. Well I hope this helps

Dear Listmates,

I'm very curious as to how extended school year services differ from

state to state. If you don't mind responding to this inquirery, I'll let you

know what my daughter receives. We live in Bucks County, Pa. right near

Philadelphia. Our school district provides my daughter with 5 weeks of

extended school year and the day runs from 8:30 to 2:30 at her elementary

school. Every Friday is trip day. She also goes to adapted swimming at the

high school 3-4 days of the week and sometimes goes to local fast food

stores for lunch. When the elementary playground program begins, gets

to interact with her NT peers in whatever activities they do with the

support of her instructional assistant. I forgot to mention that is in

an in-district run ABA program with its own Behavior analyst, two head

teachers and instructional assistants.

It wasnt meant to offend it was meant to mean that when someone in

southern Colorado is single female the state here seems to think they need

more help. When someone here is male and single they dont get the help as

someone who is female. Basically I have friends that looked at these

options to get the help they needed for there special needs children. My

mother was a single parent but hers was a have too. I am talking about

looking like one just to get help.

It does not matter if I like prejudism against my children or not!

I did forget to meantion that when we lived in Alaska my daughter had

services not dependant on our income and also in New Jersey we had services

not dependant of our income. Now that we live in Colorado everything is

based on income and yes I am upset and jealous! I am sick and tired of

paying for others with my taxes! No the state will not ever change. Its

when in Rome you do as the Romans do. Now I do not pay Colorado taxes I

pay New Mexico taxes because NM is the place that gives my kids services!

If this offends I am sorry but I have been overly offended and no one gived

a kick about me! That is life.

We live in NYC and it's not easy to get the services. My daughter was lucky

in that she was identified a long time ago and not considered autistic until

after she received special education funding. She then was on a waiting list

for three years to get the the school we wanted for her. Services in PA and

NJ are easier to get and I think there are more autisitc programs in those

states. NYC has about 6 school age programs that are great but the wait list

is long and it's difficult to get the funding.

Thanks yukiko for the words of encouragement. Yes I am very

frustrated. In NJ we got everything (not a monthly check) therapies and so

forth. Our military insurance would not pay for. I come here and ita all

based on income. Its not supposed to be. If my husband quit his job he

be spending money. See he is a chronic spender so that wasnt an option.

Pretending we were divoriced is hard because small town (I do have a friend

who had to get divoriced due to abuse and alcoholism and it wasnt easy for

her then social services gave her a hard time because she didnt have a job.

How can she work with her special needs son?) I have relatives that work

under the table and hide money in there homes so they can get services. No

kidding. This last IEP meeting I was told my son can not go to school

because Colorado its only enforced from age 7 to 16 and my son can not go to

headstart because we make too much money. There is no public preschool

here and you can not make us put one so I was told LOL. Yet we pay high

taxes for example. When we bought our double wide had to pay $1200 in

sales tax plus $250 permit for house and $125 permit for foundation.

Bought a tractor had to pay $469 plus the income tax matches NJ to a T.

The only difference between Colorado and NJ is the property taxes. So you

see this last year when I did my own taxes I had to pretend they were

someone elses because I got too upset! I am scared to go due process

because the court system here is goofy and if we have to pay for a lawyer

for this there not cheap. It would be cheaper to move in our RV to Raton

NM for services. My husband didnt want to stay in NJ he hated it. I

didnt want PA because I dont get along with inlaws LOL.

I know I am not alone feeling this way that is why Ilike the

internet.

I feel so bad for all out there who are having problems getting services.

I'm new to all this and just took for granted that it was there for the

asking. My daughter Olivia was 13 months when she started receiving EI.

Her neurologist wrote a referral, I called the EI people, they came out

that week for an eval and have been coming twice a week since. Right now

they charge my insurance company but they told us that even if our

insurance didn't cover it she would recieve these services til she's 3.

I live in New Hampshire, maybe you guys should all move out here!! LOL

Now, I don't know what happens once she turns three but I've heard a

different program kicks in at that point and covers her til she's 8.
