Sounds like you've got it made :) I homeschool so my daughter is attending

ACAP, a summer habilitation program for spectrum kids, 3 days a week, 6 hours

a day for 6 weeks. This is paid for by self-directed supports administered

by DDS in our county. They are also paying for a one week, 3 hour a day

Skyhawk Minihawk Sport camp which is NT kids mainly, fundamentals of soccer,

baseball and basketball. I also have swim money- they pay for an aide to be

in the water with her...havn't used this this year and don't know if I'll get

around to it. HTH, Deanna

PS My daughter recieved ESY the year following her one and only year in ECSE,

it was minimal.

Wow, . It sounds like you have a pretty good deal there! In Orange,

CA, Maddy goes to a local preschool during the whole summer (8am to 1pm) no

extra activities. I am going to look into swimming lessons though. I heard

that they will fund the lessons through the local Regional Center.

Forgot to mention that the one benifit of Maddy's summer school is that she

has the same teacher as she did throughout the previous school year. She's

wonderful and we're really happy that Maddy sees a familiar face each day.

Hi Jayne- that's still pretty good. My daughters ESY through our ESD here in

Oregon was 2 days of preschool per week for 3.5 hours each day. She did

attend ACAP for 8 weeks last summer- 2 days a week, but DDS paid last year

too. They also paid for her aide for 7 weeks straight of swimming lessons.

Our extended school year is about 6 weeks of slightly more relaxed school

time with academics mixed with leisure skills and community outings.

Warm regards

Dear Listmates,

I'm very curious as to how extended school year services differ from

state to state. If you don't mind responding to this inquirery, I'll let you

know what my daughter receives. We live in Bucks County, Pa. right near

Philadelphia. Our school district provides my daughter with 5 weeks of

extended school year and the day runs from 8:30 to 2:30 at her elementary

school. Every Friday is trip day. She also goes to adapted swimming at the

high school 3-4 days of the week and sometimes goes to local fast food

stores for lunch. When the elementary playground program begins, gets

to interact with her NT peers in whatever activities they do with the

support of her instructional assistant. I forgot to mention that is in

an in-district run ABA program with its own Behavior analyst, two head

teachers and instructional assistants.

Siarra has never qualified for ESY and I couldn't complain too much

because she always did meet her goals, but oddly enough, I do not

know anyone in our area (metro Atlanta) with special ed kids that

recieve ESY... seems a little fishy to me!

Hi Charlene- Just remember that all of Bridget's services are through

Department of Disability Services. I don't have any services through the

Deanna I definately live in the wrong area! Where you are in

Oregan has alot more going for you. For here though just getting any

summer services was an act of God! So I am very surprised! charlene

We have something very similar in Nassau county in Long Island, New York. My

daugghter Lara (10) attends a special school (ABA program) with permission from

the school district. They go from 9 to 3 for 6 weeks. They also tend to

concentrate more on social skills and outings. The one problem that we

encounter in some years is due to lack of qualified staff. One year we were

reduced to a 1/2 day program and this year there are reductions in OT, PT, and

speech. Many teachers burn out completely and leave and others just need to

have that summer break to relax before they begin again in the fall. (can't say

I blame them - wish I could do the same myself)

Dear Deanna,

What state do you live in? I can't believe you don't get any services

through your own school district. Do you live in a small school district or

are there two few children in your district that require the type of

services your daughter requires?

Thanks,

The midwest is certainly not like the east and west coast as services

are concerned. WE have a DDS here but the woman in charge also runs the

part c program from birth to age 3. This woman KB was on empower colorado

list when she seen some of my postings copied them and sent them to CDE

colorado department of education to help prove there case that I am

boligerent! Obnoxious. Anyway she is in charge of all this too Deanna and

she refuses to help me on the grounds that my husband makes money. The

atttitude is we are rich so dont need nothing. WE are a family of 5 and

bring in $3200 a month. I havent fought this woman yet as I am stressed

and still fighting the child study team and so forth. DDS here has been

known to give out money to families for things each month but this woman

picks who she wants and doesnt go by the law. maybe I ought to turn her

into DMV as she never got rid of her Texas plates after a year! Then again

I have to watch what evil I do I cant get angry and effectively fight these

people.

I'm glad to see that over the few years I've been on this list that the

extended school year services have continued to grow for most of our

children from state to state. I'm curious to see what will be offered to my

daughter next summer now that she'll be entering middle school in the fall.

Thanks to all of you that replied.

Charlene- we are a family of 4 and my husband makes about what yours does.

Bridget does not get SSI and therefore does not get Medicaid. DDS here is

severly weighted to the families already receiving financial assistance. The

Medicaid kids (No offence to anyone who is receiving this benefit I'm just

remarking on the inequity of certain programs designed to help individuals

with disabilities and their families) are first priority. I don't think I

ever would have found out that they existed if I wasn't so persistant at

reading the paper, keeping my eyes open for brochures etc. I know what you

mean. No matter that having to bankroll everything ourselves is destroying

our financial everything! Deanna

They also have one in Missouri ours is called the Sara and it is

illegal to have waiting list for services, so we have no waiting list and

when a slot opens up it is very competitive to get. Also the state of MO is

broke our mental health budget has been slashed badly.

I've been round and round with that here. Her DDS caseworker doesn't know

anything about it. People say OHSU has the waiver, so I guess if she was

going to get something done up there I could apply. Deanna

From my experience things are not the same in every state, the way things are

administered is definately one of them.

Do a search for Autistic Children's Activity Program and the website will

show you what it is. A gal with a teenage son with autism started it. It's

become so big that school districts often pay to send the kids to ACAP

instead of holding ESY services on campus for them. Deanna
