Hi ,

Just thought I'd reply to your question about Glucosamine. I've been

suggested to try it also. My grandma and uncle take it and they say they

have had good luck. I've been taking it off and on, a bit skeptical to take

it on a regular basis, but my thinking is it won't hurt if you try it. Let

us know how it goes if you do try it.

Take care,

Carla from Nebraska

I tried it for a few weeks, but my stomach just could not handle it.

My knees felt a bit better. My hips and shoulders were beyond help

with AVN. Knees are still rather good for 49.

Hi, I took glucosamine before my hip surgery. But the doctor said that my cartilage was all gone and isn't glucosamine supposed to help preserve cartilage. Something like that? So there was no point in my taking it.Margaret <zztinau@...> wrote: Hi everyone,My doctor has recomended I start taking glucosamine.I'm not one really for taking medication on a regular basis believing that "Medicines are just poisons with useful side effects" so not something you want to take all the time. The doctor says it takes 6-8 weeks before you get a benefit.Has anyone had experience with glucosamine? What are the positives and the negatives?Aussie MargaretRTHR 1990 revised 2004Send instant messages to your online friends

Hi, Margaret--

I took glucosamine-chondroitin tablets for most of 2005. It

seemed to me that they were helping my knees somewhat: I felt I

went up stairs more easily, for one thing. But I was told to

stop taking them before my TKR in Nov., & I haven't gone back to

them for some reason. Probably wouldn't do a thing for the

titanium knee!

The U.S. National Inst. of Health ran a long, controlled study

on this treatment, & just published the results in Feb. 2006.

You can read a summary here:

Hi Margaret

I have taken it for years with good effects.

Some years ago before my hips were resurfaced I stopped it for a few months to

see if

there was any difference. and I sure did notice.

It is important to get good quality glucosamine, I only buy from a company in

Channel

Islands because they are reknowned for quality.

Carmel, you have lots of other joints in your body with cartilage, isn't it

worth preserving

that?

My Glucosamine story:

About three year before my surgery, we went to Florida and I left my

glucosamine and other vitamins home. Did not think anything of it, since

my parents had vitamins, and I took their stuff ( the same as what I was

using-except for the glucosamine), We did a lot of walking the first few

days, and I was OK, then starting about the 5th day, I was " hurting " - in

my knees and hips. I started to wonder why- and thought about the

glucosamine. Went to the local store, got it, started taking it, and in

about another few days, was not hurting as much!

(The reason I started was that I had a friend who had an elderly

arthritic cat who she gave glucomsaine to..that cat moved about on

glucosamine days....and if she forgot the morning pill, the cat refused

to move!)

Wow, My doctor said it was something that took 6-8 weeks to feel any benifit

from. I presumed this meant it was cummulative and going off it for a week

or so probably wouldn't impact straight away.

It must have been wonderful to have something that worked for you.

Hi Margaret

Glucosamine is cummulative, but if you had been taking a regular dose for some

time then

suddenly changing the dose must surely have an effect, similarly starting it

again means

your levels are topped up again.

I started it because my horse was prescribed it, I did big scoop for him and

little scoop for

me, and then I went and bought my own.

Hi Margret,

if I don't take it for a DAY I feel it instantly. There is a new

thing out now which has Silica and Hyaluronic acid with the

glucosamine chondroitin and MSM...for me it seems to work even

better.

If anyone is interested, there is some actual science that can be

applied in the decision of whether or when to use or prescribe this

product for osteoarthritis. Results and conclusions of a study

conducted at Univ. of Utah SOM were published in NEJM, Feb.23, 2006.

Reports of this study's conclusions have been reported widely in both

the medical and other media in the last couple of weeks. Here's a

link to a summary so you can read it for yourself.

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/02/060223090212.htm

I note that the study's second phase will be completed in a year and

we will then have even more useful information about the use of this

supplement in osteoarthritis.

Unfortunately full text of the study as published in NEJM is

available only through purchase and no abstract is available at their

website.

Hi

the new joints are fine by themselves being metal on metal (in my case) or

plastic or

ceramic or whatever, it is the rest of our real human joints that use

glucosamine, this is a

part of us all and it seems that some of us don't produce enough and need the

supplementation.

Hey There,

I tried glucosamine/chondroiten combo several years ago at my Primary Dr.'s recommendation and even got a book on it he recommended. I found no discernable difference FOR ME. Others I have talked to have said otherwise. I do know that it is OTC (over the counter) and expensive (at least to me on disability) I guess it is up to the individual to see if they get any benefit or not. I would not take it again personally as it isn't cost effective for me for the immesurable benefit I got. Just my opinion sweetie. Good luck to you though!

Contessa

-- glucosamine

Hi everyone,

My doctor has recomended I start taking glucosamine.

I'm not one really for taking medication on a regular basis believing that

"Medicines are just poisons with useful side effects" so not something you

want to take all the time.

The doctor says it takes 6-8 weeks before you get a benefit.

Has anyone had experience with glucosamine?

What are the positives and the negatives?

Greywolf, I don't know why they would think that since the prosthesis

is inert material and whatever cartilage was in the arthritic joint

is removed when THR is performed so there is no cartilage left and

the source of arthritic pain from thinned cartilage is gone in that

joint.

The body's fluids surround the replacement joints (the "spare parts" I mentioned), because the implants are not isolated from the rest of the body by any coating, wrapping, etc.

Hi Susie

I know that when you initially have a replacement the new joint is filled with

blood, this

disperses over time and it is replaced with synovial fluid.

Interesting Sue,

They tried to aspirate my hip to do a culture last month. Couldn't get any

WD40? Seriously though, there is no joint fluid in an artificial joint. Glucosamine is of benefit in other joints though. Your other joints may be in jeopardy from what caused you to get an artificial joint in the first place such as OA.

My revision hip surgery is scheduled for April 18th. This hip has only lasted for 7 years. I am so hoping this new one will be improved and last much longer. I am, however, very blessed to have something like this that can be fixed.

"Boundary layer lubrication is the second major low-friction characteristic of normal joints. Here, the critical factor is proposed to be a small glycoprotein called lubricin. The lubricating properties of this synovium-derived molecule are highly specific and depend on its ability to bind to articular cartilage where it retains a protective layer of water molecules. Lubricin is not effective in artificial systems and thus does not lubricate artificial joints."
