ASD and schizophrenia are supposed to be mutually exclusive but I often read that is not the case. My 8 y.o. son is an Aspie but his dad is schizophrenic so perhaps I'm overly worried but when my boy started hearing things a year ago I wondered (not the first time). We're currently on waiting list with KKI...... Where do you live? Does he have a DAN? If none available perhaps you could have him seen by a practitioner of functional of integrative medicine? When Andy goes on Prednisone for his flares, how high of a dose and for how long does he stay there before tapering? Is Andy on anything else for the pain when he flares? Guest guest Report post Posted December 6, 2008 I think Andy started at 80 mgs of predisone. I think he was on that for at least for a month before they started to drop down. He wasn't on any pain med at the times. When he flares, he gets the fever, the rash, the fatigue and the joint pain. We are very fortunate that he does have a mild version of it compared to many people. I was curious if that is because he first got it as a child? Do adult onsets have worse cases than child onset? I do know that my onset was at 19 years old and very severe and took several years before beginning to go into remission with medications. My hopes for Andy will be a sooner remission from the fevers and joint pain and swelling. Guest guest Report post Posted December 7, 2008 What are Andy's symptoms like now when he's not flaring? I'm very new to all this, and still trying to figure out what the future's going to hold for me, so I love to hear stories of 'almost normal' days. Prednisone worked great for me too, but weaning off it was not so great. They are trying me on methotrexate right now, which is nauseating me, making my hair fall out, and not helping the joint pain... yet. Guest guest Report post Posted December 7, 2008 Andy is probably not a typical Still's patient. We have been so blessed that he has had only two true flares and those were 25 yrs in between. He also responses so well to the prednisone. He could be the poster child for the phrase, " your own millage may vary " . When he is not in a flare, he is normal. The only thing we have noticed is that since his last flare, he has more digestive issues than before. Lots more things he cannot eat without problems that he could eat before the last flare. Other than that, he rarely gets sick. If the kids and I get an upper respiratory flu, he may have a mild case of it for 24 hrs and that's it. When we all had the stomach flu in June, he had it too but again it didn't last as long as it did for the kids and I. He absolutely does not get any type of flu shot or anything we thing will stimulate his immune system. We don't know what caused the flare in '98 but he had gotten a flu shot several months before. We do not have good info on his initial flare as a child. His parents told him he had JRA and never really gave him any other info. When he flared in '98 we found out when he was hospitalized that his medical records did list the initial flare as Stills. It would have been very helpful if his parents had given him the correct info in the first place. I'm not sure if they didn't understand or if they thought it was over and done with and not a future issue. I hope this all answers your questions. Jami who recently had her shoulder replaced, and from TX, I believe, were child JRA patients. They were not so lucky as 25 years between flares. I am about 70 miles north of Dallas. 70 miles is a long ways to drive but I can sure understand it! our biggest problem is we really do have more than we can use right now, luckily we have quite a few friends and family that like it. It is just a hassel getting it to everybody..... my refrigerator gets awfully full. Right now everyone is looking forward to lots of homemade icecream this summer!
