Guest guest
That's why you call them with a serious, whole-hearted request to suspend the appropriations committee hearing until the autism treatment parents are included. That's why you call Tom Harkin, U.S. Senator and inform his staff that we're boxed out. I can't believe that A-Champ would be sitting around twittling their thumbs trying to figure out what to do even on short notice. Just remember our kids are not behind the eight ball AS is. They are pretty good about coming across like Bartles and cut- outs because they plan their work then work their plan, but we're pretty good doing things at the computer in our underwear. Imus is canned. We made sure that people have a chance to understand why. If A-Champ is willing to peck out a URGENT press release I think a few of us know what to do with it. Fox News, CBS News, CNN, etc. U.S. Senate APCOM. A-Champ needs to back up our calls with " on the record " proof that we have been shut out. This has to go beyond " rumor " . We need to be able to tell our allies that APCOM had no excuse to play dumb. > > > > > > > > --- I just called Sen Harkin'soffice. Guest guest
Just so it is clear, after Sen. Harkin's office received phone calls, especially from A-Champ members from Iowa, a staffperson did contact us this morning and invited us to submit written testimony. To restate what I said earlier, we have always had a good rapport with Sen. Harkin and his staff and we have great respect for the Senator. We learned of the hearing only on Thursday afternoon and that was through one of our Texas members. When we first contacted the committee we did not get any return calls. The committee posted the witness list on Friday although a receptionist did give me the list before it was posted on Friday. When we contacted many organizations about the first Senate Autism hearing in years none of them knew about this hearing, which gave us serious concern. It was only when we encouraged parent to call did we get a response. It was discouraging to see a Senate hearing after we have been asking for hearings for years, and to see one organization and the CDC/NIH as the only witnesses. Now apparently one parent from ASA has been and we expect that as a parent she will drive home the point about the difficulty of obtaining services. The point that we believe is important is that the autism community as a whole appeared to be excluded from the hearing. When we raised our voices there was a response. We have been advised that Sen. Harkin wants information about autism and we have asked for additional hearings with adequate notice to allow us to participate meaningfully. Sen. Harkin has always been fairminded but sometimes we need to raise our voices to be heard if others claim to represent the community. One more point. It was suggested by someone, not on this list, that somehow we were maligning Bradley Whitford, the celebrity spokesperson for autism Speaks. This is not the case. We made no comment about Mr. Whitford and would not say anything negative about him. Mr. Whitford is not the issue. Certainly, his intention is to promote the cause of helping children with autism. Guest guest
Lets be clear about Senator Harkin...really He takes lots of money from big pharma and lots of money from PACs funded heavily by GE. He has been deeply vested with GE politically for a long time. This is also a senator that refused to sign onto Chuck Hagels bill to remove mercury from vaccines. He is a career politician, that in itself makes him corrupt(sorry if you don't like that cold reality). Here is a glimpse into his 2006 cycle. I took the pharma stuff only. Do you really think he will do the right thing? Did he do the right thing with the appropriations meeting or did he just do the WRIGHT thing. That said, we have no choice but to work with him. Guest guest
Please forgive me if this is a dumb question, but how does or could tomorrow's (probably today's by now) Senate Appropriation Hearing coincide, interface with, or impact upon the IOM workshop which is slated to occur on April 18th, regarding Autism and the Environment? Don't tell me that these two events are occurring in isolation of each other! Right now, these 2 events are upcoming within the next few days, yet I see no-one making connections between the two, if indeed there are any connections to be drawn or made. If any of you have the time, please visit the IOM link that I sent to this list group yesterday (or the day before, since it's after midnight now). If what is going on there is separate from the Senate hearings, some folks ought to lend an ear there also, to make sure that you and your children are not left out of the loop. Guest guest
So, are we still calling anyone today about anything? Is it too late? Guest guest
If you didn’t call all the people on the list yesterday, keep calling. If you did call them all already, call back the head guys, Harkin and Specter, and ask them to ask questions of the panels for you. And ask them to call AChamp to testify. I will be there to do it if they call on us.  we don’t want to be relegated to just submitted written testimony after the fact. From: EOHarm [mailto:EOHarm ] On Behalf Of andrea52521991 Sent: Tuesday, April 17, 2007 8:16 AM EOHarm Subject: Re: Senate Appropriations - You must call the committee So, are we still calling anyone today about anything? Guest guest
Yes, continue to call throughout the day and beyond. We cannot afford for anyone to be complacent and be sitting on their ass the next couple days or telling war stories on this list. Call all the members on the committee and plead your case for them to consider the other organizations and science. All we can do at this point is persuade them to listen to people other than the small hand picked panel. If you are a constituent of any of these senators you can likely get better access to speak with someone. If we cannot ring their phones consistently to protest the limited panel of this appropriations meeting than we really have nothing to complain about. You folks who never call really need to step up now. > > > > Not a dumb question. The thing is, we don’t know what will be > > discussed. The agenda could be anything frankly. It could be > about > > the legislation they will announce at the 10am press conference > where > > they are asking for $350Million, that I never heard of before last > > night. It could be a surrender for the IOM. Guest guest
What questions is everyone else asking for? I think we'd have more impact if we were asking for the same things.
