I have gotten sent to several voicemail

boxes and got to talk to a few health aides today. They are still taking calls

and are NOT hearing from many of us. What are you people doing??????

Do you want to leave your kid’s

future to Bob and the NIH? Seriously? You all need to make at least

ONE call today. Just one. This is messed up and you all need to fight for

what you believe in.

These are the talking points from the

AChamp alert:

Tell The staff person that you are a parent of a

child with autism (ore related to one)

Ask why Your Organization was Not Notified of the

Hearing

State that the lack of notification to the

community is not acceptable

Identify Your Organization (A-CHAMP or others)

Stress that the one organization participating

does not speak for you or your child

Ask: " Doesn't My Child Count Too? "

Just call em up and complain. Take your frustrations

out on them if you feel the urge, but to do nothing only hurts our kids.

So get off your butt, well, technically

you can stay on your butt, but CALL TODAY!!!!! The hearing is tomorrow so it’s

now or never.

Subject: Senate

Appropriations - You must call the committee

Here is the list folks. Forget , Imus and

everything else until you can call these

Senators. You really have nothing to bitch about if you don't pick up the phone

and

advocate for our kids and community. The option is to leave it all to

Gerberding

and Bob . If most of this list cannot step up and make some calls we are

simply not serious about solving these issues and don't have a snowballs chance

in hell.

This is a immediate priority. This is not a time to be complacent! Please make

some calls.

I just called Senator Harkin's office. The young woman who answered the phone said that she would "forward my message to Senator Harkin, happily." Perhaps we have a friend in the office. Everyone should call! (It isn't hard or scary at all)

I just got in 7 calls before my voice went out on me again (I lost it last night

due to

allergies-got it back long enough for an IEP meeting and some calls-now it's

gone again). I

made it a point to call Ted s. I was born in Alaska and visit twice a

year, he has been

on my sh*t list for a long time, especially since his involvement in the

fristmas eve gift to

our kids. I couldn't decide while on the phone whether I sounded like Brando in

the

godfather or more like a 70 year old barfly who just smoked two packs of

cigarettes!

If you have not called anyone today at least call Tom Harkin and Arlen Spectors

office.

We are totally screwed if their phone does not ring off the hook in protest of

this hearing.

This is so important and people are talking about , Oprah and Imus. Pick

up the

phone and do something important...even if you are not comfortable doing so.

Arlin Spector's office told me " The Democrats are in charge; they

The people in Senator Hutchison's office were nice and said they would

try to get to the bottom of it, and that they had received many calls

from ACHAMP members today. They also mentioned, however, that Senator

Harkin had the discretion to invite who he wanted so there wasn't much

they can do about it.

If you have little time left-use it to call Senator Harkin's office---they made the arrangements--Sally <rainmanmama@...> wrote: Call now!! I rarely post here, but I did call the the appropriations committee,

Senator Harkin's office, and Senator Specter's office. The person from

Harkin's office sounded a little like she's heard what I had to say

quite a few times today. Hopefully, that is true.

I called Harkin's office and was told that they have had lots of calls

on this. She said she understood why I would be dissappointed and

that she would add my name to the " list " and thanked me for calling.

I then said.... " well, would you like my name? " " Since you are making

a list " .

I wonder if they give them the names, or if they just track the number

of calls?

If it was our opinion was that important to them, don't you think they

would at least want a " name " ??

ugh!

they could still do it.

What kind of switchboard do they have? When you call Dominos for

The hearing was not made public on the committee website until Friday.

They make a formal public notice so they are technically covered.

Perhaps professional lobbyists can hop to, and monitor the public

notices. We have met with the Senate staffers repeatedly asking for

hearings. To suggest that making a public notice on Thursday or Friday

of last week fulfills their responsibility to the community is

disingenuous.

Of course it would help if the organizations that are

participating,(now ASA is added to the witness list) would have had the

courtesy of informing the rest of us a while back when they knew about

the hearing. After, all aren't we one community. Don't our kids count,

too.

ONE VOICE? - what a joke.

Senator Harkin's staff has always been responsive to A-CHAMP. We have

had many positive contacts with the stafff and Sen. Harkin himself.

They will keep the record open for A-CHAMP's written testimony.

The question remains - why did some members of the autism community not

publicize this hearing when they knew about it. After all, we are one

community, or are we? Our kids count too!

Hundreds of calls have gone in from A-CHAMP and other supportive

organizations.

Thank you for making the calls. I think we made our point! Our kids

count, too and we will be heard.

Good point Bob. Very suspect indeed. I think ASA and AS inform their

members after the fact. " Hey, look what we did... " Parents who

actually want to effect real change for their kids need to take the

intiative and not wait for the big orgs to do the " right thing " for

our kids. They have their own agendas and it is becoming clearer by

the day.

I definitely agree... " Our kids matter too!!! "

--- I just called Sen Harkin'soffice. I got a message as the office is

closed, but I left my name and City. I thanked him for including A-

Champ in the Senate Appropriations Committee Meeting.

Sorry I got home too late to make anymore calls....

It's way too much to ask of them.

Yeah, bummer.... I didn't realize that A-Champ was not notified in a

timely fashion...or at all. I only hope that this flooding of calls

makes some kind of an impact....
