Claudina,

Apologies also for getting your name incorrect as I read Zack's message last

and then responded :-(

Thanks Zack :-)

Organic virgin is best but it needs to be unrefined oil. It needs to be

cold pressed instead of them using high temperatures. There is a really

good website explaining one of the coconut oils I stock in the UK..

www.coconut-connections.com this explains what to look for in a coconut

oil.

hope this helps

in the UK

Hi Claudina,

I'd recommend the unrefined oil.

I don't have it bookmarked but there is a website that outlines the

manufacturing process for the unrefined vs. refined oil. I'll see if I can

find it. But basically, to start out, the refined oil is often made from

coconuts that have been allowed to become moldy, rancid, etc. And the

processing to refine it causes some damage to the oil. The photos are

rather graphic and you may not want to ever have the refined oil after

seeing them!

Both oils look the same when I see them in jars at the store. The labels

are the only way I could tell them apart. But the unrefined oil has a

mild coconut taste that I find very pleasant and the refined oil has

almost no taste.

Hello Claudina,

I use the same coconut oil Zack uses which is unrefined, unprocessed Spectrum

Naturals, before I used to buy Bali Sun coconut oil which is my favourite but

for some reason it is no longer available here in the Toronto, Ontario, Canada

area.

Hope this helps,

Maddalena

==>You always store coconut oil in a cupboard or on the counter. It

keeps for up to 2 years that way. Ensure you have the correct

coconut oil, which must be unrefined, undeoderized and unbleached per

my article - also see our Group's Files (left menu) for the " C)

Coconut oil " Folder, which contains recommended brands and websites.

In fact our moderator, Jackie, did a survey which is in that folder

as well.

==>The best buy is at Mountain Rose Herbs in the U.S.; 1 gallon of

Unrefined costs $28.00 US - they are in Eugene, Oregon (be careful

because they also have a refined CO).

==>Hi. Yes, organic extra virgin is usually best, but the

words " virgin " and " extra virgin " are not regulated, so depending

upon the company you are not necessarily getting the best. I love

Garden of Life EVCO, and also Tropical Traditions. However, I buy

Mountain Rose Herb Unrefined CO by the gallon at $28.00 each.

==>Claudina, never use refined coconut oil for your skin nor

internally - often referred to as RBD oil, i.e. refined, bleached &

deodorized. Always use unrefined.

Thank you so much, Bee.

The brand I bought is " Jarrow " , says certified organic by QAI and says 100 %

unrefined expeller pressed, organic.

Produc of the Philippines. It brings 16 oz and I paid 12 dollars, so the one you

are telling me is less expensive. The thing is in Whole food they don't have it.

So I guess I should buy it through internet.

Claudina.

Hi Claudina,

That looks like good coconut oil. The price is in line with what I pay for

the other brands, too.

Hi Zack,

Thank you for telling me, but I have to change the brand anyway because it make

it like a stone when it is kept in the fridge, and since the manufacturer says

so I don't want to leave it out.

==>Hi. You do not need to keep any untreated saturated fats in the

fridge. My mother and grandmother only had good saturated animal

fats and they kept a grease pot at the back of their wood stoves,

using it over and over again without any problems. We got our first

fridge when I was in grade 5. The manufacturer is being too " overly

cautious " if their CO is made correctly. Bruce Fife is considered

the expert on coconut oil and he has written several books about it.

Coconut oil is never kept in the fridge unless you are not going to

use it up for 2 years. Even then you can keep out what you will use

in that time.

Oils and fats that go bad without refrigeration are man-made

vegetable oils that are often rancid even before they are purchased.

They will even go rancid in the fridge, i.e. canola, safflower,

soybean, Mazola, Crisco, etc., etc. Flax oil also goes rancid very

rapidly so it must be used up within a specified time. Olive oil

will go rancid too, but not as quickly as the other vegetable oils.

So you should keep only what you will use up within 2 weeks out of

the fridge.

Hello Amber,

If you're anything like me, best to be prepared for spinning dizzy

feelings, nausea, headaches or tiredness soon after taking the

coconut oil. Try it at a time when you don't have anything

important planned, so you can gauge its effects on you. I take my

last spoon of the day sometime before bed, and can still feel the

effects when I wake in the morning ( a dizzy fatigue and tired body

generally)

If I have something important planned, I don't take it that day,

although there's not much that I deem more important than sorting

out my health.

Love Nicola

Question : if it can speed up die-off effects, will this impact on me

physically (in terms of my sporting ability/energy) over the next month?

> I had only a teaspoon or so with my lunch and I couldnt get to sleep

for the life of me last night!! I felt like I had taken speed or

something and now I'm too scared to try it again.

==>Hi Amber. Coconut oil can interfere with sleep but it is only

temporary. Try taking 1 or 1/2 teaspoon in the morning instead of for

lunch. It changes your metabolism, and even healthy people will

experience changes, like Ray Peat in his article about coconut oil:

" Although I had stopped using the unsaturated seed oils years ago, and

supposed that I wasn't heavily saturated with toxic unsaturated fat,

when I first used coconut oil I saw an immediate response, that

convinced me my metabolism was chronically inhibited by something that

was easily alleviated by " dilution " or molecular competition.

I had put a tablespoonful of coconut oil on some rice I had for supper,

and half an hour later while I was reading, I noticed I was breathing

more deeply than normal. I saw that my skin was pink, and I found that

my pulse was faster than normal--about 98, I think. After an hour or

two, my pulse and breathing returned to normal. Every day for a couple

of weeks I noticed the same response while I was digesting a small

amount of coconut oil, but gradually it didn't happen any more, and I

increased my daily consumption of the oil to about an ounce. "

==>It also take some time for your body to switch over from running on

carbs to running on good fats and oils, so following your ratios of

protein to fat to carbs is important.

I am a new member with a lot of problems, so was going to just read here

for a while before posting. However, I saw this post on coconut oil. I

have a big bottle of virgin organic coconut oil, don't know how I am

going to get that in my mouth, but have started spreading it on the

eczema on my ankles.

I have diabetes, fibro, arthritis, celiac, no thyroid, no parathyroids

and just had breast cancer surgery. I don't feel well almost all the

time. Now I have a lot of pain because the surgeon was convinced there

was cancer in my nodes, they did not look right, and took out more than

the usual one or two. They are clean, but it is hard for me to see past

the pain.

When my diabetes control slips, as it has recently, I am prone to yeast

infections resulting from intertrigo. As I am 70, I have lots of folds

for the yeast to live. I check these areas daily and when I see

redness, or ooze, I slap on a mix of bag balm and lidocaine 5%

ointment. It about two days that patch of yeast is gone, I have

smothered it to death.

I was very interested in the suggestions to add coconut oil to the diet,

I have a friend doing it and she says she feels much better. However,

she is doing a lot of things right now that I cannot.

Back to reading, except perhaps I will try some coconut oil on my

veggies - but in tea?

Helen:

Three tablespoons daily of the Coconut Oil is recommended (minimum) but you

might want to work up to that slowly. Are you saying you have no Thyroid gland?

What is Intertrigo?

I know what Bag Balm is, but what is Lidocaine? I too have an itchy spot.

Remember Coconut Oil is a HEALING FOOD, not a drug.

Bonnie, intertrigo is when the skin is irritated from rubbing against

other skin in the folds. The weakened skin is then susceptible to

yeast, which is what happens to me.

The lidocaine 5% ointment is a numbing ointment, my yeast stings and

this quiets the pain.

Will coconut oil also help with other types of pain, as from

osteoporosis? My 90 year old mother takes pain medicine and often

uses various rubs on her legs, but she's still in constant pain.

:

Dr. Fife has a section on Osteoporosis in one of his books but I can't remember

what he said about it. It's very good for the elderly as they have lost some

ability (some of them) to ABSORB all the nutrients from their diets and VCO

certainly will help with that as well as Hormone Balance and Osteoporosis has a

hormone IMBALANCE connection.

By the way, Osteoporosis can be reversed.
