Guest guest
Hi Everyone, This is a great site. I am excited to hear about all of you. We, Dean and , have 3 children. Our son, Quinn, is 3 and our twins, Sara and Maggie, are nine months. Somedays are crazy and some days are insane, but overall we are having a lot of fun. Maggie was not diagnosed with Down syndrome until she was three months old. This is strange because she saw many doctors when she was born. Sara's water bag broke at 32 weeks and I went on strict (hospital) bedrest for the next month. They were born at 36 weeks and were pronounced healthy and we were sent home. I noticed that Maggie was " floppier " than her sister but figured if anything was wrong with her the pediatrician would tell us. At 2 1/2 months I asked the doctor about it and he casually mentioned doing a chromosome analysis. Two weeks later we were told our daughter had that extra chromosome. Happily Maggie has no health problems, hasn't been sick but for a cold early in the spring, and eats like a champ. She has been sitting up since about 7 months and is now getting ready to crawl, she is getting up on all fours and rocking. She is a delight! More later, Stauffer (no subject) From: Shellhutch@... HI! My name is and I just joined this list. I have 4 year old triplet boys and a 2 year old girl. One of my triplets has DS. Their names are (he has DS) , , and Alec. And my daughter's name is Hunter. We live in land. Last year the boys all went to preschool together and we are hoping to do the same this year. I have just gone back to college to become a nurse. We just finished our first summer of swim lessons and was the best out of the 3! We are getting ready to start him on Piracetam and possibly Nutrivine(sp?) So we will let know how that goes. We are finally making progress in the potty training area (YEAH) so I am hopeful we will be done with diapers soon. never had any heart problems but he did have a lot of airway problems and had a tracheotomy from 1 & 1/2 until he was 3 & 1/2. But thankfully he is doing much better now. I am looking forward to hearing from others on this list! ---------------------------

Guest guest
I'm here, I just have 2 sick kids. And is a real pain when he's sick. Actually, this was better than it has been in the past. Don't know whether it's being older, or the GF diet. I imagine a little of both. isn't worrying me as much anymore. I guess it's just him being normal. I think his tummy hurts. But a lady that watches him on Wednesday mornings mentioned about him " going stiff " in her words, the arching when you try to put him down on the floor. I think it's just that sick/clingy thing. Guest guest
I hear ya! Seth has an iep meeting tomorrow at 3 and no one told me about it. His teacher said " see you friday at the meeting " so I called and they said sorry, we sent you a letter. NOT!!! What would happen if they held it without me? Is that legal? If Seth didn't have such a great teacher and classroom, I would tell them all to get out of our lives and leave us alone. They are the ones with the major problems! fuming Gail

Guest guest
Looks like you have a fight on your hands. I would make the points about the bus ride being too long at the other school, and the one you want is closer. Be sure and get copies of the special ed laws, highlight them where you need to, and use them. Use the phrases from the laws. For instance " We want Aston in the Least Restrictive Environment. This school is closer to us, (would it be your home school? What school would she attend if she didnt' have a disability?), and that makes it more of a LRE. She cannot tolerate the long bus ride to the other school. " What did you not like about the other school? Was the class room too noisy? Would it be distracting? I think you would have a case for LRE just based on the distance factor. Do you have a copy of " Negotiating the Special Education Maze " ? If not, get it. IT really helps. It may even be cost effective to find a lawyer to come with you to the meeting, they tend to listen more. Let us know how things are going. Don't give up. We are pulling for you. THe running and hiding from company, flapping things, videos (We have almost out grown Barney-in place are " Kid's Songs " " Sesame Street " (Elmo-Palooza right now-6 times a day!) " Blue's Clues " and my personal favorite " Veggie-Tales " . The end will come. Help it along) etc.... Thanks for sharing your story. I have strained my right hamstring several times doing the front kick. I have to keep remembering to lift my knee up high before kicking. When it's bad, I modify too, like you do. Sometimes, I'll just do a knee raise with that leg. That's great that you have learned to modify so quickly (in fact you answered our " Question of the Week " without realizing it-- What moves can't you do and how have you worked around it, or something to that effect). Guest guest
There are varying levels of autism. In fact, one of the problems we had initially in getting the autism specialist to believe Ian's diagnosis was that she worked with patients, trying to get them to where Ian was already. Ian is communicative, he interacts well. His main problems are with inflexibility and routine rigidity. We know that as far as this dual diagnosis goes, we're very lucky. Gail: " Stim " behaviors, spinning, shaking things, and other oddities that are outward that are usually associated with autism do not necessarily equate to a diagnosis of autism. There is a separate category for stereotypic movement disorder, for instance, which basically means kids dangle stuff but don't have autism. There are three primary domains for autism: communication, social, and inappropriate object use (those are them, right?). If there are not characteristics in all three domains, then most likely your child does not have autistic spectrum disorder along with Down syndrome. Kids with DS and autistic spectrum *tend* to be stronger (have better skills)in the social category than is associated with autism in general. At the same time, they have a greater tendency to be lost in " inappropriate object use " than typical kids with autism. My take is that ds/asd looks something like, " I have more trouble with communication--don't understand how it works " than kids with ds and am similar to kids with autism; I'm not a social butterfly like kids with DS, but I look like it compared to kids wiht autism only; I just LOVE to dangle stuff and it takes on a life of it's own--and is a greater problem for me than kids with autism only or ds only " That's how I see it in a global sense. The actual label isn't NEARLY as important as effective teaching/education for your son. If Seth's team doesn't " box " kids into teaching methods, then you're fine. Use whatever works: discrete trial, whatever. Hope this helps a little. Joan
Guest guest
Gail, Kids can overcome the autism, although it is rare. There is so little known especially with the interplay between DS and autism. Jen's phychiatrist said he believed she would " outgrow " it. If autism is an autoimmune disease (my belief that it is in at least some kids), then there are remissions one would expect to see. Also, if he is on meds, that could explain it. I do believe that if they allow some of the world in and it is good to them, they start to let more in. BTW - could there be any better news than your kid doesn't seem to look autistic anymore? Guest guest
Hi : Yes, I know all about the RISE school (for any of you who've read " Another Season " , this is the Dallas version of the RISE school that Gene Stallings helped start in Alabama). The Dallas Down Syndrome Guild hold's it's quarterly New Parent Coffee's at the school. Unfortunately, the location and the hours (and the cost) just wouldn't work out for us. The are located at the Tollway & Royal (north Dallas) and we are in Duncanville (not close at all). Also, their hours are only from 9:00-2:30. I'd still have to find a daycare that would pick them up from school for a few hrs. Just didn't work out logistically. Cost wise, I had heard it was expensive, but they have a very generous scholarship program. They have several benefactors, one of them being the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have a program called " First Downs for Down Syndrome " . Every time the get a first down, money is donated to the school. Pretty neat, eh? There is another school in Dallas for developmentally delayed children called " Notre Dame " . Again, the logistics just didn't make it work. Plus, I think we wanted to give the Duncanville ISD a shot. Unlike dealing w/the Dallas ISD, I've heard nothing bad about Duncanville. Appreciate you thinking of me tho!
