2 minutes into the show and Imus started talking about autism again. He said he has a film clip that they are going to show in a little while of what these moms are dealing with.

He said not all these kids are like the 'kid that scored the

three pointer' and people should see what the families are

going through.

Stay tuned....

I really admire .

The video and her comments were so geniune. It would be so easy for

her to keep this private and not stir the proverbial pot.

When she had her son who she said was 6 & 1/2 years old, and she had

him on the living floor wiping his butt with baby wipes.

Everyone has to see this PSA.

Imus spoke before he aired it and mentioned the kid hitting 6 -3

pointers a few months ago and he had autism. He said people think

based on stories like that, if you just leave your autistic kid

alone that they'll be fine.

God bless the kids who are like J-Mac the basketball player, but

there are a lot more kids like the ones shown in the Autsim Speaks

PSA.

Bobbie is right; this is the kind

of PSA we need airing continuously. To feel the impact of this is unlike any

other segment I have seen; not that it has not been done before, nut so many

examples in such a short time....so much was covered .Behaviors, Finances,

Dreams lost, Worries od the future...and all from the

parents and children living it, not from

reporters

Is there a way we can get a copy of

this, Bobbie, to present to legislators, educators, therapists, etc? For PAC,

SPED meetings, and at committee hearings? MA, and other states, ae absolutely

ready for this......Thanks, Suzanne Messina REAACH, MFVC, AO

I'm so pissed I missed it. One of the moms videotaped was my friend Michele, who has 3 boys with autism. She went to the BIG dinner last night where they played this video. She told me that Bush was going to be there- and . I asked her to thank for all of us. i told her to tell " please ask your husband to take mercury out of vaccines " lol-- don't think she did. I'll get a report and get back to y'all.

Regarding this PSA -

I have not seen this but I am sure it is powerful. Just remember,

however, that Autism Speaks is a great PR and marketing machine but not

a real organization of parents. They have a paid staff of people - but

not the hands on passion and knowledge that exists in a number of

grassroots parent organizations. But they have no " Bandwagon. " The

heavy lifting has been done and will continue to be done by ordinary

parents like us in our various organizations. Autism Speaks has not led

that and I don't think they can nor should they. We need our own

leaders - not mere public relations stunts. Any tangible

accomplishment, especially the state thimerosal bans, the coalition for

insurance coverage for autism in NY, the science initiatives and

others has been done by ordinary parents. A PSA that is effective will

help us, but real organization by parents can only be done by us, not

by a marketing machine. We can use the marketing exposure - but that

has to be followed by organizational structure and membership by

parents with a real agenda that addresses our needs. Toothpaste joint

ventures and celebrity marketing raises money, may raise " awareness "

but does not drive home our issues in legislatures.

So while I am glad that this PSA has appeared and I am eager to see it,

let's keep our eye on the ball and not jump on a bandwagon that is a

marketing engine and not a true organization of parents. Use the

publicity it generates to make our points - that is no substitute for

the hands on advocacy that we need to engage in.

Right .that is why having this available to parent- run

organizations, as part of our

(many) presentations would be so effective ....it was a mirror reflecting

our lives, so this would be an effective component to a well developed

presentation, including testimony from local constituents,

and presentations of scientific data

I was in a puddle of tears and had real

trouble getting myself together to get the kids off to school. I think it’s

excessively hard for those of us to watch our lives in that fashion but

extremely necessary for the rest of the population to see! Especially

legislators! I agree autism speaks is just going at this in a much more

manipulative manner. Bring on the manipulation! Shock and awe may take on a

new meaning.-

, you're so right. Story -- last year we had to consult with

a family lawyer (not ours, another family member) because autism had

just about bankrupted up and my husband had been out of work for

almost 2 years. We had to sell our beautiful house in Cleveland

and move in with my parents in Mass. My mother in law was helping

us financially and the F'ing (yes, I'm angry) lawyer in Stamford CT

says " how did you spend so much money so fast? You live in

Cleveland, what kind of a lifestyle do you lead????? " I wanted to

reach through the phone and strangle her -- she had NO EARTHLY CLUE

what we had been through for 3, yes THREE autistic kids. I told

my hsuband today, I hope that idiot lawyer was watching Imus --

maybe even she learned something.....-

It was more than what I consider a PSA (brief and to the point). It lasted several minutes and showed so many kids in so many different situations. The parents were able to convey their feelings, frustrations, and fears. Really touches the heart as we can all identify with exactly what each parent was experiencing. This is a video that EVERY legislator needs to see. My sincere appreciation to everyone who participated and made this video possible. Lynda

Tie up Frist, Hastert, Hillary, Bill Clinton, Bush '41, Bush '43, Waxman and Kennedy and the others and force them to watch it again and again and again.

Maureen,

I don’t

know if it will make you day. You will probably break down crying

hysterically. I was not expecting this reaction or I would not have

watched it with my kids next to me. My girls came running to hug their incapacitated

mother. My ASD son somehow realizing it was about him came to watch a

small clip. Prepare yourself. There is a part where one of the

mothers said she almost drove off a bridge with her ASD daughter and it was

only the fact that she had another child to care for that she didn’t.

Those thoughts have NEVER gone through my mind but I thought it was incredible

brave and open of her to admit those feelings. This definitely depicted the

“reality” of our lives and what we think and go through. “What

will happen to him, if I die?” “I can’t die!” Very

powerful.-

Is this on the Autism Speaks web site? I missed it since I have to be at work at

I just sent an e-mail to the Imus show at MSNBC:

I was amazed by the clip you showed this morning on the Autism segment. I

am a parent with a child who regressed into Autism after vaccinations, and

have never seen a news organization get it so right. I was in an emotional

PUDDLE while watching it. I am still trying to recover because we (parents

of children with ASD) cannot stay in this “reality” state all of the time or

we would all have breakdowns. Many parents missed the show and are

requesting that it get posted somewhere. Is this going to be repeated?

Also, this must be shown to every legislator and the rest of the world to

show just what it is like to have a child with Autism with out the

“savant-like” qualities that are constantly shown in the media. Thank you,

Thank you, Thank you! Imus is a true hero to those of us in the Autism

community. Yours truly, Chapman

Bobbie,I am a video guy and this is the best I have ever seen and the

only thing that shows what we as parents are going though (but what

our children are going though I believe, is much worse) from what will

happen to our children if something happens to us to the fear that our

children will get hit by a car etc, etc. etc.... A BIG THANK YOU! To

Autism Speaks and to Don Imus thank God we have these people helping

us!

It was over twenty minutes long.

Highlighted four mothers w/ their autistic children (3 boys 1 girl-

one of the mothers was ).

It was divided into segments on certain topics. Example they would

show something like " can't you..

And then the mothers would talk about something like their child

having a tantrum in public or doing something not " normal " and

people staring or judging or making rude comments. They stressed

people should teach their children by their example.

They hit on fears- of the future, fear child running in traffic,

fear of the future financial problems, divorce rates, sleep

deprivation, sibling issues, everything you name it.

Poignant video and dialogue to match. Amazing

I don't think anyone could thoroughly describe it. Something that

must be seen.

I too e-mailed autism speaks and someone else e-mailed Imus. Maybe

we should contact MSNBC. They have to replay it.
