Billie,

I have sprouted onions in the easy sprout and they came out great, but not as

long as ew's. Mine were 1 to 1 1/2 inches. They are very tasty in salads.

I've occassionally tasted the delicious zing of the onion sprout in the Russian

mix, however w/ a sprout rate of 10-15 days, I'm afraid I'm generally chewing on

unsprouted onion seeds, or rinsing them down the sink. The taste truly is

amazing. I think I will buy both the individual onion and garlic seeds, mix them

up and sprout them together...then add them to my Long Life, Radish, and Hot 2

sprouted seed mix for a mindblowing taste sensation !!!......I'm drooling over

here.......

I have only one thing to say!!

I'M NOT BUYING ANY ONION OR GARLIC SPROUTS.

I just came from looking at what the price was. I cannot get over this. $19.95

for a half pound? Do you know how much Fenugreek or Radish sprouts I could buy

for that amount?

I nearly fell off the chair.

I'll cut up an onion and I'll saute some garlic instead.

Holy Cow!!

Melody,

There is nothing better (except I don't eat croutons. :) ).

I do enjoy reading about your sprouting adventures and enjoyed your blog. The

steamers are a creative idea!

Maybe someone should explain 'pollination' to you. Those ants and bees are

working for Mother Nature. The ants tell me that your landlord doesn't use

poison sprays. If he does start growing squash again and gives you some, shred

them into your salads. You will love them. I never steered you wrong.

ew

Re: How come no one saw my blog!!

Well, I gave it SOME thought, then I said to myself " Melody, you hate anything

to do with bugs, dirt, etc. " . " you sprout nice and cleanly in your nice and

clean kitchen " .

I think I want to keep it that way. Some years back, my landlord had all kinds

of stuff growing in the backyard. He gives me stuff. But then he started growing

those gigantic long green squashes and I used to like to make the squash flower

patties (It's an italian thing). You take the squash flowers, clean them, dip in

batter, and then fry. It's quite delicious (that's way back then when I used to

eat like a bear). Don't do any of that any more, and I don't fry.

So I'll never forget when I said " You've got lots of squash flowers, I'll take

some and he said " no problem, they are all yours, go and grab some " . Well, you

should have seen the ants and the bees inside of these flowers. I started

screaming, he comes running over (and he's missing a leg mind you), and he

starts laughing saying " what's the matter " ? And I'm yelling " bugs, bugs, bugs "

and I ran into the house.

He got the hose, washed them off, and gave them to me, and I washed them AGAIN,

VERY CAREFULLY IN MY SINK.

Never did that again. Don't like any bugs.

Kill me, but that's how I am.

lol

Garlic seeds to sprout? I was at the Farmers' market this Saturday and i saw an

organic plant vendor selling garlic heads with green coming out of each garlic

clove. Isn't that a sprout also? I bought three heads and planted them.

Hi EW:

I know about pollination, and I don't care. lol. I don't like any kind of

creepy crawly things on my food, or when they grow. He has ALL these things

flying in and out of crawling all over his backyard (on the vines, especially).

When I go into my bedroom (which is directly in front of his backyard), he has

been growing grapes for YEARS!!! There are vines in the ceiling of the backyard,

there are tressels(sorry spelling). And further back is where the long tall

squashes used to grow. Haven's seen them in a while and he told me " they were

rotten, I'm not growing them any more " . When he used to give me the long tall

squashes (and I'm talking over 4 feet long), I used to cut up the squash and

steam or stir fry them), and when he gave me the squash flowers, I would batter

them.

But since he no longer grows them (haven't seen them for years), that's not

going to happen any more.

But the vines!!! Good Lord, one day I was in the back yard visiting the people

who live downstairs in the basement. Their entrance is in the backyard.

I looked up at the vines and all I saw was ants crawling over them, and some of

the vines were hitting my windowsill (going into my back window, and on my air

conditioner). Well, I got my knife and I snipped, snipped, snipped, till no

vines were hitting my back windowsill. Because I don't want ants in my bedroom.

That happened once, YEARS AGO, I walked into the bedroom and there was a line of

ants walking over everything. I had to throw out my carpet, my bedding, and I

had to CLEAN everything. I don't want a repeat of that. Here in Brooklyn, ants

can be a big problem to get rid of. People use bleach, they use Boric Acid, they

use ant spray, whatever. One guy next door to me, once work up and he had ants

on him. His bedroom was in the back also. He had a much worse case than I ever

did.

But ever since I snipped those vines, and I use a safe spray, and I spray into

the cracks and crevices that lead to the outside, I've had no big problem. Oh, a

stray will get in here and there, but I keep a watch.

One interesting thing I noticed is what happened in the FRONT OF MY HOUSE. For

the people in the basement, it's the BACK OF THEIR APARTMENT. I used to have

ants near my radiator (in the living room) which is directly over the back of

their basement apartment.

I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on. Every day, I would find ants,

right by the radiator.

I went downstairs and asked to see what was directly underneath my living room

radiator. I immediately found the problem.

Everything in the basement had been fixed up, secured, painted, finished, etc,

EXCEPT FOR THAT BACK ROOM.

So I walk into the back room of their basement and I saw pipes, I saw the

breaker switches (that control all the electricity for all the families

apartments), and all I saw was bricks and dirt on the back wall. No one had

thought to seal this up. And I immediatly saw a few ants crawling up and around

the bricks. They keep their storage in this room. All were in sealed

containers, their sowing machine, etc. But when I showed her a few ants that

were crawling around the bricks, she just shrugged and said " oh, you don't like

ants, they don't bother me " .

I immediately got my can of spray (with this long nozzle), and I sprayed inside

the bricks. I told her " you may not care about ants in this back room, but they

are entering my house " . I got the message across in a very polite way.

BUT I DON'T LIKE ANTS. So I use those ant bait things in the front of my door,

and I seal off the radiator in the summer time. So far, whatever I'm doing,

seems to work.

I just keep doing what I need to do so I don't have ants and crawly things in my

house. But the one thing I can't seem to get rid of is the 100 leggers (I

believe these are called silverfish??).

I hate bugs.

I could never be a farmer, this I know.

lol

Apply to cotton Balls and put in strategic places around the house, like the

kitchen counter, window, in cabinets, etc.  You can probably get the essential

oil of peppermint online or at health food store in the section with vitamins

and other care products.

Thanks:

I just did a search on a product called Woodstream M601. I used to use a product

called VICTOR's a long long time ago. It smelled of mint. I just googled it and

I believe they changed the name and it's now called Woodstream M601.

Have any of you heard or used this product (or similar one?)

Thanks much

Thanks:

I just did a search on a product called Woodstream M601. I used to use a product

called VICTOR's a long long time ago. It smelled of mint. I just googled it and

I believe they changed the name and it's now called Woodstream M601.

Have any of you heard or used this product (or similar one?)

Thanks much

I Googled that...it's an insecticide...and probably contains ingredients that

are people-cide as well....Google peppermint essential oil...there are a

gazillion links, and you can pick one up and see if natural-nice smelling, non

toxic essential oils can help w/ bug/ critter issues...
