Hi a,

Hope things are better for you and your arm is painter. The air is nice but

I

turned if off as soon as he left. I worry so about the bill but if we get

another

heat wave I will have to turn it on. He will come and check. I am so worried

about

this scar tissue. If the pain keeps up I will call the GI doctor. At least we

could get the test out of the way and be sure it is scar tissue. I don't want

to

wait to long and not be able to go back to school. On the other hand I'm not

sure I

am strong enough for another surgery. Do you know if it is a large surgery or

just

an in and out? You can tell me, I would always rather know what I am facing. I

ask

my primary and he skipped over it. So I didn't get an answer. I hate this and

then

to have the RA on top of it. The substitute therapist today at the pool told me

not

to go near land therapy. We will see what the doctor has to say on Wednesday.

On

Thursday I see the Rheumy, so I can ask him about this nodule I have. But with

the

stomach that seems like small potatoes.

Hope you are well today,

Lynn (MeMom)

Lynn,

I searched for any info on scar tissue removal after a whipple surgery, but

came up blank. It said scar tissue was a common side effect, but didn¹t go

into any specifics as to the treatment for it. You should ask your doctor

again and don¹t let him skip on it.

Tomorrow night it¹s going in the 50¹s!!!! Great sleeping weather. Today

is close to 100 and tomorrow it will be in the 50¹s. No wonder I hurt! My

arm is much better thanks.

Thanks for checking a. That is what I found. I think Deb told me that in

the

medical books they mention scar tissue but do not speak of the pain that it

causes.

I guess there is not much written on it. I guess I should call the GI doctor

but

with so much going on I don't know what to do. Plus I am afraid of what she is

going to say. I guess I will wait a few more days and then get into. Thank you

for

checking.

Hope you arm continues to improve.

Hi Heidi,

Thank you for your kind thoughts. Sometimes it gets very hard with so

much happening. I hate going to down to to's office. I feel that he is a

surgeon and his job is to operate. The last thing I want is more surgery. I

will go for the test this week and see what happens. My big problem right now

is school, I just don't know what to do. If I drop there will probably be a

reason I didn't have too. If I don't drop, I probably will wish that I had.

I am between a brick and a hard place. I just don't know what to do. I think

I will call the professors and see if they will work with me, maybe that way I

can stay in school. Hope you have a good day,

Lynn (MeMom)

Hi Lynn,

It is very sweet of you to think of your friend like that. Your professor

sounds like a dork though. I will pray that you hit on the right solution

so that your mind will be at rest about this.

Hi Heidi,

Thanks for your kind words. My biggest problem is not so much that I

would

lose the tuition money. But if I had to drop my friend would drop also.

This

is really not fair to her or her husband who pays for her education. I am

going

to call the professor and see what they say. But you can't go by what they

say

either. I had one professor say he would work with me and then told me, via

my

friend, to drop the class or he would drop me from it. So I have some

thinking

to do and not much time to do it. Hope you are feeling well today,

Hi Sunshine!

Well, have you made your decision about school yet? When is your appointment

with Dr to? I know it is coming up but I have forgotten the exact date.

Are things any better? Knock on wood, after my last attack, my adhesions

have been behaving themselves and it looks as though I may have bought myself

some time. Now I can at least recover from my knee surgery before I head

into the next elective surgery unless I obstruct and medical intervention

cannot resolve it. I don't even want to think about that!

After the third surgery, he dressed it with some sterile stuff and bandaged

it up with a snug ACE bandage to keep the swelling down to a minimum and put

that fluid back where it belongs in the my body. However, right now, the

knee has filled up again with an enormous amount of fluid and I think when I

see him on Monday, he will most likely go back to surgery to re drain this

thing. He also has changed my pain medication that has been working much

better for me and allows me to get some decent rest/sleep during the day and

evening. I got my Remicade and iron infusion and the hematologist says that

I am responding to the double dose of iron and therefore I can just get every

8 weeks instead of every 4 weeks. So, I am happy with this! The Remicade

has to be tweaked as it is only lasting 6 weeks, I want it either bumped up

in dosage or frequency. My rheumy is in Italy for 1 month, so at my next

appointment, we WILL discuss this!

I also need to see a heart specialist ASAP. Today they could not get my

pulse lower than 116. I had this same problem in the hospital and it has

been going on for a while already. It is a funny feeling, when your heart is

just racing and you have no way to slow it down. My big fear is not what he

is going to say to me, but that the first words out of his mouth is going to

be OH MY GOD, YOU GOTTA LOSE WEIGHT! Duh, and how do you predict that I do

this doc???????

Well, hang in there, my friend. The appt with Dr to should be just

around the corner and I pray that he has the answers that you so desperately

need.

Hi Deb,

I am so glad that you are feeling better. I do hope it continue and you can

put all this behind you. I see to on the 29th. I went for the test, the

cat

scan was okay. But the other test were very long. I had to drink the barium

but

when the doctor saw how slow everything was he told me not to drink all of the

second one. He ask me after the first couple of sips did I feel ill. I told

yes

that it happens all the time. He said that everything is so slow. Later he

told

me things moving through picked up but there is definitely something wrong. Ask

him what that meant and he said he feels there is scar tissue. He told me it is

the cause of all the pain. He scared me because he came into the room and put

his arm around me. I didn't know what he had found. But he just wanted to know

if I felt better and I did. So now I wait to see what my primary, GI, and

surgeon say. School well I guess I will have to bite the bullet and drop.

There

is a plan B, my friend and I decided if we drop to take day trip with the

college. They offer great little day trip for almost nothing. So that is the

plan. I do have a trip to Washington's House in October. I have always

wanted to go there. I am very disappointed about all this stomach stuff but I

will just have to make the best of it.

Hope today brings you feeling better and able to enjoy time with your

family.

Hugs

Hi Lynn:

I am so sorry to hear that you must have surgery but

hopefully after this you will feel so much better. I

have a good friend who just had surgery for adhesions

that wrapped completely around her colon - her

symptoms were very similar to what you have described.

She has done so well since the surgery but, like you,

worries that the adhesions will come back which they

might, but for right now her life is back to normal

and we are all grateful for that. I know you must be

disappointed not being able to go to school but your

health is more important right now. Best of luck with

the surgery -

Hi a,

First let me thank everyone whose sent me a message about today. Well it

didn't go so well. There will be another major surgery. First he told me

the pain isn't scar tissue but I knew they would say that. The incision at

the stomach and intestines has twisted and is very big from scar tissue.

Also, they have to redo some of the work to stop the bile from collecting in

the pouch. It is called a Gastro-Jejunostomy. It is almost as involved as

the whipple. I can't believe this, I keep wondering how much I can take. I

go in on September 26 and they operate on September 27. They have to hook up

the IV on the 26 to get the bile out of the pouch. He couldn't tell me how

long the surgery would be, or how long I would be in the hospital, because he

doesn't know how much scar tissue he will encounter. I just can't believe

this. I know Deb told me, they always tell a patient scar tissue doesn't

hurt. But when I saw the GI doctor I didn't even tell her were the pain was,

she touched my stomach and ask if that was were it hurt. When I said yes,

she said scar tissue. I have to talk to her tomorrow.

Thank you a for sending this message. I am just upset tonight and

more scared than I was before I had the whipple. I have to go and see if I

can find anything on this surgery.

Hi Heidi,

Thank you for your message. I wish things had gone better. I knew I would

need more surgery but I didn't expect one as big as I had had. So it is a good

thing I dropped school, I could never had gone.

Lynn,

I¹m sorry the news wasn¹t better. A gastrojejunostomy is a surgical

procedure in which the stomach (gastro) and the upper small bowel (jejunum)

are sewn to each other. An ³-ostomy² is a general term for an artificial

opening, or connection, that is created between to hollow organs.

Ordinarily, the stomach is separated from the jejunum by the first portion

of the small bowel, the duodenum. When there is a blockage in the duodenum,

or when part of the stomach has to be removed, a gastrojejunostomy can be

performed in order to bypass the duodenum. Sometimes, the duodenum (or part

of it) is also removed.

Here¹s a picture:

http://hopkins-gi.org/pages/latin/templates/?pg=disease3 & organ=5 & disease=23 &

pagetype=12 & pagenum=248 & lang_id=1

There isn¹t very much information about this, but I¹ll see what I can find.

I know how upsetting this is. If it gives you relief, it will be worth it,

but from what I read, reflux is still a common problem after this procedure.

I also saw a lot of mentioning of it done laproscopically so that it is

minimally invasive. Maybe you have to many problems making this out of the

question. I wish I had better news Lynn.

You are the best. I am sitting here so afraid. That can't go in

laproscopically because there has been too much surgery. I don't know what to

do, I

just didn't expect this. Your note makes me feel better and I am going to go to

Lynn,

I don¹t blame you for being afraid. Already having the whipple surgery, you

know what to expect and I know that surgery wasn¹t easy. This one won¹t be

easy either, but neither is the life you are living. I hope the thoughts of

feeling better help cope with the fears.

Hi Lynn:

I know exactly the surgery you will be having - my son

went through that June of last year - he was 17 then.

He had been experiencing a feeling of fullness after

eating only a little food but he is only 110 pounds

and he had never been a very big eater so I did not

really think much about it. Then one day he began

throwing up, but since the flu was going around I

figured that was it and he went to bed. Then the

stomach pain started, and became severe and this kid

never complains of pain. He was laid out flat on the

bathroom floor unable to get up. I rushed him to the

E.R. and after many tests, x-rays, blood work,

ultrasound, they diganosed a narrowing and blockage

near the jejunum. His entire intestine to that point

was full to bursting - he was not too far away from

that exact thing happening when we got to the E.R. He

was scheduled for a gastrojejunostomy the following

morning. Seems that this was another birth defect that

he had been born with as a preemie and he had finally

gotten large enough for it to cause problems.

He had had open hear surgery as a young child so the

doctor simply continued the incision from that - it

stopped just a little below the middle of his chest

and it was extended down to his naval for this

surgery. He was more upset with the larger scar than

the surgery! The surgery itself took 4 hours. He was

in the hospital for one week following his surgery.

They kept him on the morphine drip for the first few

days after surgery - I or his dad stayed with him and

pushed it for him to keep him asleep and comfortable,

and then he went onto oral pain meds. He hurt, not

going to say he did not have pain, but it was

managable with the pain medications he received. He

was able to get up and out of bed by the 5th postop

day and walk up and down the hallway with his i.v.

pole. He has always bounced back from his surgeries

quickly. Postop was uneventful and he went home with

prescriptions for pain meds but he never filled them.

The orders were to do no lifting or carrying for six

weeks and he was not to work out for six months - this

rather ticked him off as the surgery had cut right

through his " six-pack abs " and he wanted to get them

back asap! For him, the recovery after surgery and

not being able to really do anything was the hardest

part of the whole ordeal. He was able to eat again

after the surgery - can he ever put it away now! Like

I said, he had always been one to not each much food,

but maybe this narrowing had been keeping him from

eating any more and this also contributed to his

smallness. He is a medical miracle.

I suppose if we had found out when Chip was younger

that he had this narrowing in his intestine he would

have had the surgery a lot earlier - usually it is

performed when the child is small and there is an

eating or growth deficit attributed to a narrowing -

but we were more concerned with his heart and tracheal

defects. Guess this intestinal problem waited to show

up until he was stronger and through the other

surgeries.

It is a complicated surgery but it seems to be a

pretty common one too. If you can, make sure you have

someone who can stay with you and keep your pain meds

going so that you are able to rest - we wanted to keep

him sleeping as much as we could the first few days to

let him heal so that's what we did. I checked it

out on the internet when we found what needed to be

done but did not find a lot about it. Perhaps a

can find you some good sites - she is a whiz at

finding things on this dang internet. If you have any

other questions, feel free to ask me more and I will

help if I can.

Lynn-

Sorry I don't write more often - you have really been

through the mill and deserve a rest from the surgeries

and all the side effects. You are in my prayers as you

go through new surgery - and always. Hang in there.

Hi Heidi,

You are doing plenty for me by lighting a candle and saying prayers. That

is more than anyone can do.

Hi a,

` I spoke to the GI doc and she told me that this surgery is all

probability

will not help the eating. The problem being that the connection between stomach

and

intestines doesn't work right anymore. It has been too damaged. So a lot of

what I

feel after eating may not go away. But she told me, I have to have the surgery

and

if this was her she would do it. I can deal with that, slowly I have learned to

live with all the problems. It is this new surgery that is so upsetting. I

can't

even sleep, people die during surgery. I have to find out what the death rate

for

this is, not that it will change anything. On the other hand I know they do

great

things with surgery. I just have to pray and trust in God.

Lynn,

Your fears are very understandable. I think they are worse because you¹ve

already been through a very similar surgery, and you know what to expect.

When I was having my second knee replacement, it was worse knowing what was

coming.

Please try not to focus on the possibilities of death. Rely on your faith

to see you through this. He was with you the first time and He will be

there this time.

I know it¹s hard, I¹ve been in your shoes. Waiting is the worse. I wish

there was something I could do.

I know you are right a, but I am so worried and scared. My girls are 19 and

21,

grown but I think they still need me. This is going to be so hard, but I will

keep

your words in my heart.
