Dr. Kolb called me on a Saturday, too, and I was really impressed by

that. I felt confident in both Dr. Kolb and Dr. Feng, and chose Dr.

Feng because she was closer.

I had my implants removed on October 19th. I have gone up and down

with my recovery, but realize that it will take time. I just

started treatment with a natural doc who I think will be able to

help me build my immune system back up. I got better for a while,

then it hit me really hard again. I have had such bad inflammation

and pain that even the natural doc agreed I needed a dose of

prednisone to calm it down. I know prednisone is bad for me, but so

is the chronic inflammation. For now, I am SO relieved to be pain

free - I feel like I could paint the house! What I have learned

from the women here in this support group is that some get well

right away, and others it takes more time and effort. Only prayer,

healthy lifestyle and time will heal the damage done by the

implants. The really cool thing about going through all of this is

that I don't think I would trade any of the experience. I have

learned so much about true beauty and the hardship continues to

strenghen my character.

I'm glad to get to know you, and hope that the women here help you

to get through this.

good ear to qualify for a CI. Never heard of any combined comprehension

test. So, next time you go for an eval, don't try so hard. That was advice I

got from my otologist. This is not a test you want to try real hard to pass.

If you aren't absolutely, positively sure you heard it, then don't reply.

Because as deaf people, we are used to " filling in the blanks " which could

skew a test toward making it seem we hear better than we do.

Your audiologist should have a sample of the Freedom processor for you to

try on. It does a whole lot more than the 3G does, and I don't think it is

much larger. Might be wider, but not as long? I have the 3G processor, which

was larger than the Esprit BTE processor I had before.

But it had the built in telecoil, whisper and other features that made it

worthwhile for me.

Hi ,

My doctor said I met the criteria for the implant. The problem is my Blue

Cross insurance. They are looking hard at CI recipients and looking for ways

to not have to pay. Blue Cross (Alabama) has decided on the 50% or less

bilateral score as the dividing line. My otologist gave me the exact same

advice after the test. Since I just went through all these tests in

December, I have to wait 6 months to be re-tested. I will go back and see

him in July. Maybe I wasn't as ready for the implant in December as I

thought.

My local audiologist in Mobile has not mapped anyone with the Freedom and

does not have one on hand. She has the 3G and showed that one to me sometime

back. I feel sure my doctor and audiologist in Birmingham have the Freedom,

but they didn't show it to me while I was there. I should have asked.

I have never met anyone " in person " who has a CI. The HLAA/SHHH convention

is in Orlando this summer. I've only been a member a couple of years, and

have never been to the convention. Orlando is close enough to drive, so my

husband and I are definitely planning to go this year. Perfect timing--

right before my re-testing in July.

Hi Lynn. I wear a Freedom, and have no problem with it even though I had never

worn a BTE. Yes, it does seem light. When I was activated on October 7, 2005, my

Audie had never mapped a Freedom either. I was the first! For this reason, we

both agreed that a Cochlear rep should be present. Everything went smoothly, and

I could hear speech clearly(a bit high pitched at the time) immediately! A

friend has a 3G, but hers seems about the same size. I also have direct connect

cables which I got free from Cochlear Corp. to use with the TV, walkman, and FM

systems. Good luck in your CI quest.

Hi, Lynn,

So far I like my 3G better! LOL Keep in mind that my 3G has a 9 month

head start on my Freedom. The Freedom is doing a great job for me compared to

what I was getting from a hearing aid. It is just going to take some time to

get mapped more optimally. With the maps I have, I am getting very close. I

expect, with a few more sessions, we may hit upon a map that is a " keeper "

for more than a few months. My 3 G was last mapped in August, before I was

implanted with the Freedom. It has not been remapped since my new CI at my

request because I was doing so well with it. I'm just now noticing things that

will

have me asking for a change at my next session. I'm assuming the two CI's

are balancing each other out now, and some " tweaking " is required.

I don't find the Freedom so light as to not feel it, but it isn't

exactly heavy either. I have one pair of wirerims with which it is easier to

wear.

My other pair of glasses have slightly thicker temples (arms) and by the end

of the day I'm happy to take them AND my Freedom off. Please don't

misunderstand, I LOVE both my CI's. I just want to be sure I give a clear and

honest

picture to anyone who asks so that their expectations are realistic and not a

total surprise if things don't go as someone on the forum said they would. Good

I am so THRILLED!! I have Portis' list, but I have no intention of

doing a bunch of cooking ahead of time. In fact, I told my husband (who

refuses to cook) that I wanted him to lovingly cook me dinner while I'm laid

up!! Yea right!! LOL The " get your husband to take you out to dinner every

Oh no Rogene, I don't need workers comp. What's happening involves my

employer. They are not allowing me to use my paid sick leave (I have

hundreds of hours built up) to get my implants out. They consider this

an elective surgery and " not a treatment of an injury or sickness. " So

I have to use my vacation time. I only have 1 day of vacation left

until it gets renewed in June - then I'll have 3 weeks.

So, I am having my surgery on Friday April 13th, using my last day of

PV and I have to pray to God I feel well enough to go to work on

Monday. D, Lynda and have offered some good tips on how I

might get this covered as sick leave. I am nervous to make a fuss

about it because I don't want to hurt my chances for future job

promotions. I was relating this to people on worker's comp. I know a

few people w/ work comp claims (carpal tunnel, etc.) who seem to have

trouble when it comes to moving up.

not. That is so strange!! If your explanting doctor writes you a letter

stating it was necessary, I don't see how they could fight it.

Another thing that could be put in a letter of medical necessity is

pain. If your implants are painful, that is a medical reason to

remove them. That does not make it elective.

I also noticed after explant, this big sign of relief there gone... Then felt better without them somewhat, even lost some symptoms..... Then in about a few weeks Blam, it was ruff for a spell...... Do take it easy ....

Thanks Rogene, I am eating and drinking no problem. I am drinking tons of water and a liver detox tea. I am also drinking this lowfat Kefir that I got at Safeway...I like it so I go through about a quart a day.... In fact I'm drinking so much that I am peeing all the time. Today is tough for me...I'm very tired, sore and discombobulated. I have to get myself together soon to go see Dr. Huang so she can see how everything is going. Yes, I have rested quite a bit today and will continue to. I wanted to get out today but just couldn't so I have been listening to my body. Perhaps in the next day or so we can start to enjoy Denver. It depends on the doctor. Some doctors will do the initial consult

the day before surgery. You just have to find out what any

individual doctor requires.
