Hi,

Since I'm fairly new to the group, this subject may have already been covered -

adding protein to a smoothie. Can I add protein powder to a smoothie and have

it count towards my protein for the day? Or should I concentrate on adding

protein as a whole food to daily food intake?

Thanks - Jan

Another new " girl " !

Any Uk enthusiasts?

Some of the recipes contain American products and you may have been able to find

UK alternatives.

Also trying to do sensible Atkins, so are there any smoothies without fruit?

Thanks.

I don't see any mention of whey protein powder. Maybe I missed this?

Whey is one of the most easily digested forms of high quality proteins. Forget

about soy, as over 98% of it is GMO. Not to mention other health risks

associated with ingesting soy.

Whey is a great way to add protein to your diet. I used a lot of whey when I

was pregnant and wanted to really up the amount of proein I was getting. Just

make sure to get a high quality whey that is made from grass fed cows that are

not on antibiotics or given bovine growth hormones. The whey that I like is

USDA organic and called " Whey to Health " . 1 scoop contains 8 grams of protein.

I usually add 2 scoops of whey per smoothie.

I also like to add hemp seeds, chia seeds, nut milks (macadamia nut milk is

great), and will be trying raw egg yolks when I start getting pastured organic

eggs from a local farm soon.

Hi Tony,

How sweet does the smoothie have to be to not taste the raw egg?

I want to start adding raw egg yolks when I get some quality local pastured

eggs. We don't do fruit smoothies here (my toddler can't handle all the sugar),

but I do a lot of " ice creams " made with nut milks, and about 1/4 cup palm sugar

or honey with raw cacao powder and coconut butter. If I throw a raw egg yolk

into this mix, will it taste eggy?

Do you have a favorite raw egg smoothie recipe that you wouldn't mind sharing?

I use an egg smoothie in the mornings... it's super quick when I don't have time or just don't feel like eating anything else....

3/4 cup boiling water

coconut oil (I usually use about 2 TBSP, but if you're not used to using coconut oil, start slowly; it's antifungal/antibacterial, so does some detoxing )

1 egg

cocoa or cacao nibs to taste (I just started using the nibs the other day and prefer them to the cocoa-they will melt in the boiling water)

stevia, if you want some sweetening.

Put all ingredients in VM and blend..... you can adjust amounts of any of the ingredients to your liking.... I found it tasted like hot chocolate if I got it right.

Occasionally I add 1/2 tsp of matcha tea to it as well

Thank you!

Will be experimenting shortly.

My little guy loves hot chocolate- actually he's 4 and dairy free/gluten free.

I use coconut milk and raw cacao powder + a touch of palm sugar. I'll try

blending in an egg yolk and see what happens. The extra protein would be great

in the morning.

The coconut oil we also use to help our son detox. I just put 1 tablespoon in

his cod liver oil and he doesn't seem to mind it at all, and I haven't noticed

any type of die off type reaction.

I've been trying various things for Protein, etc...

One pretty great source for this and MANY other things is Swanson's, on line. ( Recommended to me by a top doctor specializing in allergies, etc)

Plus their prices are great, as is their quality.

For protein they have various single sources, etc.

Sally, it is sad when we can't trust doctors, but I must say that Swansons is

loaded with potential allergens. Their whey protein powder contains corn, soy

and wheat ingredients, although the label makes it look otherwise. The blatent

term " natural flavors " can and usually does contain many ingredients to BE that

ingredient, but they are not required to list those individually-a real blow to

those of us with allergies! Just wanted to give you a heads up on that (I

learned the hard way, ending up in the ER with an extreme allergic reactions)

For protein, I use organic red quinoa, which is a protein in its own right. I

cook up a large batch at the beginning of the week, and keep it stored in a

mason jar in my fridge, adding a scoop to baked goods or smoothies as needed.

Another thing to consider is that whey made from conventional milk may very well

have RBGH - bovine growth hormone, and that the cows were fed GMO grain so its

in the milk so its in your whey.

I have found a great whey that is USDA organic, and made from grass fed cows,

and has no flavor called Whey to Health - can be purchased from a health food

store.

,hi..

Thanks for the reply...

I certainly understand what you were saying... and I use quinoa quite a bit as well. <g>

Not every product that Swanson's carries is allergy free.... The doctor in question was recommending specific items that Swanson's has....many are of better quality than those available elsewhere and at a great price. And example of this would be their CoQ10, for instance. Regarding the protein, they have quite a few types from various sources, not simply whey. Just thought these might be of help to some of the list members.

I,personally, have other medical issues but not allergies and Swanson's has been a good source for many things that I need, and at a good price. Certainly, each item should be evaluated separately by a potential purchaser.

I agree Sally. I have been using Swanson's products for years too. I think we can all stipulate that if a product or food makes you ill you shouldn't use it. Hi all,Just wondering if you get into the particulars about protein isolates vs. concentrates when educating/interacting and making recommendations for PRO supplements to pts.?! Margeaux Maniatis, BASc, RD | Registered Clinical Dietitian Surgical Weight Loss Centre www.swlc.ca

I definitely do in my pre-op classes as well as post-op visits. I think it’s important to educate the patient about this just at you would knowing the difference

between 100% whole grain and wheat flour. I do leave it up to them to make the decision because I have some patients who cannot afford the better quality protein, but I do want to at least educate on it and help them understand that they are getting more

for their money.
