,

I have always followed the plan exactly as the book says. I'm not fanatical

about doing that - it's just that it works for me. I don't have hours upon

hours to spend in the gym so less than 4 hours a week is great for my

lifestyle. I did notice changes at about the 4th week and on but Norma (aka

Surf), my success coach, is awesome and did not notice any changes until

week 8 or 9. She said then, it was like her body was changing before her

eyes.

To Kim and All!

I'm not even where you are yet, as my boy/girl twins are only turning

16months, BUT has also started looking and listening for our future

schooling choices for Tara.

This I know, I live in New Jersey, and have friends from other towns

than my own that have NOT used their own public school system. What they

have done BEFORE their IEP meeting was investigate where they did want

their child to be, then proved to their school system that they could

not or would not provide what the " other " school was providing. In one

case the child was ALLREADY enrolled in the school of choice and the

public school was sent there to " see " what was going on then the parents

asked the public school system if they could " match " it, the public

school system admitted that they couldn't, and then agreed to send the

child out of district to that school!

One situation was similar that the parents told their public school

system to please visit a paticular school, they did and also agreed to

send the child out of district.

In northern New Jersey there is a school in Livingston called Stepping

Stones, it is a school for children birth to 6 years just for children

with Ds! I visited it last Feb and have decieded to enroll Tara for this

Sept{she'll be 18 months then} she will go Tues and Thurs 9-11 and get

PT, OT and speech while I'm in a formal support parent group and her

twin and my other daughter will be in a music/art & crafts class! This

will be out of our pocket, for now, IF we really are thrilled we might

do the same and ask out public school system to go to Stepping Stones

and see for them selves. I've also heard it will be difficult for us as

our town has never sent a child out of district before. I have not

checked out our {handicapp, that's what they call it}pre-school, but

have not heard anything good about it either!

You could/should check out your neighboring towns, they might have a

great program that stresses inclusion or have great special Ed teachers

ask your local chapter of the ARC, they often give out " best teacher "

awards yearly, so they would know who's-who in special ED.

Hope this helps?

Hi Kim, has been in the birth to three in the Snohomish School dist. for a

year now. She has had a pretty good experience. I have however supplemented

private speech therapy thru Providence Childrens Center in Everett. Another

option is Cascade Childrens Therapy in Mill Creek I have heard great things

about them. She goes to preschool 4 days a week, and I think of it more as a

social place for her and use her additional therapy for her development. The

therapists at the school are spread pretty thin. They do work with her daily,

but I do like the intense one on one she gets thru Providence.

As far as your insurance goes, have you put on the waiting list for the

Family Support Dollars? It is through the Department of Developmental

Disabilities here in Washington State. You do not have to be financialy

qualified at all and the application process is a breeze. I will give you the

number for our region if you would like, (we are in the same region as you).

will then be alloted $1,200 per year for his needs, respite, additional

therapy, horse back riding, camps, etc. Plus the really great part is that you

get a medical coupon for . The coupon takes care of everything your

insurance doesn't. It covers all of 's therapies after insurance runs out,

it also covers her copays at the doctors office, her prescriptions and she just

recently had to get hearing aids, and the coupon paid for them in full! I have

not had to pay anything out of pocket.

Let me know if you want the phone number. I have not heard of a 3-5 program in

our area that is not run by the school dist. but I will ask around.

Good Luck

Diane, mom to Adam 8, and (ds) 3 going on 4 in September!

Since this is a group that subscribes to the Body for Life program, I

encourage you to try on that you don't have to count your protein gram, and

calories, and ounces, etc. All you have to keep track of is 6 portions of

proteins matched with 6 portions of carbohydrates each day and at least 2

portions of vegatables. Since your hands are most likely larger anyway do to

your size, your portions will be bigger than mine since I'm a woman and more

petite. A portion is the size of your clenched fist or open palm. Stick to

that and I guarentee you'll do great!

I'm looking into shakes and protein bars to supplement this and I was just

wondering what anyone else was doing to achieve this ratio.

Okay, here we go.....BFL-STYLE.....cuz that's the program we are doing.

Ditch the bread. No bread is authorized whatsoever except ONE slice of WHOLE

WHEAT bread. How much protein do you need? 6 portions of protein a day eaten

every 2 1/2 to 3 hours with a portion of carbs and at least 2 portions of

veggies a day.

How big is a portion? The size of your open palm or a clenched fist.

It's in the book. Read the book. Live the book. Use it as a mousepad. =)

My first question is if I chose to eat a roast beef sandwich and double up

on the meat to get the amount of protein that I need are 'deli' meats

suitable for this.

Also is there a certain kind of bread that I should use or stay away from.

Gosh Pam, have no idea what that rash could be!!! Has

Hannah been taking any kind of medicine lately??

Changed soap or shampoo or detergent? Sounds

definitely like she needs to have it looked at.

LOL we live in Texas, a suburb of Dallas. Where are

you guys from again??? We know a family in Tulsa, OK

w/identical twin girls w/DS. (That reminds me, I have

to bug to join this list again!). They

turned 4 in August. We stopped and had breakfast

w/them on our way to Chicago at Cracker-barrel. Molly

& have similar hair color and skin tone to S & P

and are slightly bigger in size, but not by a whole

lot. While we were there, several people came by our

table and asked if they were Quads!!! Too funny!

Hey Judi, I have relatives who live in Texas around

the Dallas area. Unfortunately, we do not keep in

touch or visit each other. Too bad we might could meet

sometime. We live in Tennessee close to the Alabama

border.

Hannah's scalp looks a little better this evening. If

it's not better in a few days I will take her in to

see the ped. I remember having something

similar when she was 1 and the Dr. gave me some tar

shampoo to put on her scalp and it cleared it up

quickly.

Have a good night.

Hi Pam - Rudy has very bad psorisis (sp?) on his head. At times its very

active and itches, has the oozing, and lots of flakes. As a baby & toddler,

when it first started coming out, he would lose the hair in the spots but I

think that was more from scratching than anything. Today he has fairly thick

hair which I keep very closely cropped to help keep his head cool. When he

is hot and sweats it really gets agravated (my spelling leaves something to

be desired today!). When he has " outbreaks " it usually continues down his

back into what looks more like a heat rash. He'll also get a bumby face

around his cheeks, ears, chin, & neck. When this happens we break out the

cortisone cream to help with the itching and/or give him Benadryl. His dad

had him this summer and used some kind of vitamin E cream on him. I'm going

to email him and ask what he used because it really worked well and I'll let

you know. I would suggest having your pedi look at Hannah and see if he has

another suggestion. For now, I'd just keep her scalp clean and advise her to

try and not scratch or pick at the spots.

Hugs

Thanks, I was hoping you would know what it was. I

kind of thought that it was psoriasis. It is not

looking any worse but not really better either. Sounds

like Rudy's got worse as he got older? Or the

outbreaks did anyway.

Let me know about the cream. Thanks alot!!!

I am currenty on a " bulking " phase, have put on about 2k

in 2 weeks. I have cut out all cardio and increased protein

to well over 200+ grams a day (not counting exactly) and increased total

calories quite a bit.

have also put the fat back in my diet, ie whole milk, whole eggs.

you need testosterone to grow muscle and if there is insuficient fat

in your diet the test wont do its job.

also drinking heaps more water. only train 3 days a week, 2 exercise

of 3 sets per body part HIT style, 1st set is warmup. other sets

of 4-8RM. you dont need more volume but more intensity, ie heavier weights.

which in turn means much stricter form. my strength is noticeable going

up each time I go to the gym. my BMR is going up which will make

any fat I gain easier to loose later. then Ill start the cardio up

again. the only suplements I am taking are glucosamine and glutamine.

hope that helps.

I add two packets of equal to my shakes and I think they taste yummy. :o)

Hope this helps

.. I have tried the Myoplex shakes and bars. I can't stand them, to me they are gross. Is there any other way of doing this without haveing to use them? Pills would be good, no taste, just swallow :)

Thanks in advance.

Dunno about the bars Barb, but how about disgiusing the flavor of the shakes with extract, cinnamon, cocoa, fruit? L.

I just use protein powder, usually chocolate flavoured, with yogurt or

milk or whatever is appropriate to mix it with, even fruit juice at

times.

I feel the same way. Does muscle come before you burn the fat b/c we are

consuming more calories or what? Do you have to do extra cardio or does it

eventually balance out b/c I have been feeling similar in gaining muscle

plus fat or vice versa. Thanks.

are you sure you are getting weaker??? because I have gotten stronger

alot stronger in fact I carry my car to work, i trample small

villages and i toss giant boulders of granite around like marbles

<hehe>, just kidding, are you following the program by the book??? 8

weeks you should notice something increasing, do you work out alone

or with a partner? maybe you need the motivation of a workout partner

to push you over the edge?

FYI, low carb is okay for losing weight. Its NOT okay for building muscle,

however, and the point is to build muscle to raise your metabolism.
