Thanks Fran.... I about jumped out of my skin when I first turned it on high to clean it.. hehe... It was better when I did my smoothie... variable to high.... :) Is there an optimal amount of time to drink green smoothies... I drank mine immediately but hubs went to bed and said he would drink his later... I popped it in the fridge....

I try to drink mine right away and my two little dogs get their share too, but I frequently leave some in the frig for my husband too. I find that they thicken up a bit when stored that way so it's a good idea to put it in a mason jar with a lid so you can shake it up a bit before drinking. I've never stored them that long but I think that they should be fine if you drink them within a day or so.

I put any leftovers in a glass jar with lid as well. Since I got my VM I've been saving and cleaning all sizes of glass jars.  I still drink juices and smoothies right away or save them for Husband for a few hours, but for some of the dips, salsa, sauces even half a VM recipe makes a ton and some of it lasts a few days in the fridge.

There is nothing quite like that first smoothie. I have to tell you that I've had my Vitamix for close to 4 years now and I'm STILL excited to use it every day! (especially when I'm trying something new!)

Thanks for the info Lea Anne... my hubby will not be getting the fridgie smoothie today since my 15 year old daughter came home from school and devoured the rest of it. She said it was really good.... My 17 year old son tried it, said it was ok, but opted for tortilla chips and salsa... lol Also had a question on cleaning the pitcher. I fill with warm water...drop of dishwashing liquid and turn on high. The blender is a bit loud for a second on high ...is that a normal start up sound or is it better for the VM to be set on variable, worked up and then run on high.

I'm glad to know I'm not alone, b/c I am so happy to have this machine. It's like a big girl toy... I can't wait to get in the groove and use the heck out of it. I also feel like I've found a little home... reading the messages has shown me that so many of you are interested in things I am. Alternative cooking methods, growing your own food, working on being as healthy as we can. So, although I won't comment on everyone's posts and drive everyone crazy... :) I am reading and learning.... Have a great day...

I saw a site yesterday, (and others) that make enough and keep it in the fridge for 2 days.

It seems to me that every day my smoothie tastes differently. Unless you count every gram, etc, it could taste just a bit different. Everything varries to some degree. How big are your chunks, how many grapes or blueberries etc.

I had a favorite, but can't remember just what I did. They all are good.

Can you explain what you mean by enzymes are "denatured" after half hr?

Sorry, teacher.....lol

k

-- Re: My first smoothie....

Hello Dawn,

Enzymes are denatured after 1/2 hour

Vitamins oxidize slowly over time (ideally consume the smoothie within 24 hours)

Minerals and Fiber never go away

And finally, my favorite saying where the topic of consuming stored smoothies (or non-organic produce) is concerned: "A Smoothie with no enzymes and less vitamins (or a non-organic apple) is better than a Snicker's bar any day!"

I make a pitcher full every morning drink half for breakfast and half for lunch. I can taste, feel absolutely no difference at all. Best to be started on variable speed 1, worked up to 10, then switched to high.

Yesterday my husband made a smoothie with soy milk, banana, honey, protein powder, a handful each of almonds and goji berries and it was amazing! I only got a taste as there was only enough for 1, but it certainly left me wanting more!

Let me know how it turns out! DON'T worry about using raw eggs - Leave Them Out if you want - I wish I'd never included them in that video because I rarely put eggs in my ice cream anyway and it has caused a lot of controversy. Carnation Instant Milk Powder or any brand of milk powder or any other soy protein powder. Also, spinach is a much better "first" green to use - much more mild than the Arugula that turned out to be…

It's a good habit to form. Going from "off" to HIGH makes quite a splash. :)
