Well, bats are a little quieter than bug zappers.. They can be annoying though, although their radar is pretty good they swoop by pretty close to you. We get large groups of them on the lakes sometimes at dusk and it's really fun to get a couple of girls out in the boat. My brother and I and our ex-wives (family tradition) were out fishing and it was kind of funny when we got to the shore they both leaped out of the boat and ran like the dickens back to our campsite... :) -dz-

I must say I have honestly never seen a real live bat and if I have I don't think I knew it. Oh my I'd run like the dickens if I saw one and I wouldn't come out of that camper for week. No - they are not rodents and they do not get in your hair. And yes they are friends. They eat hundreds of bugs and mosquitoes every night and us folks up here love anything that eIN-RIGHT: 0px; PADDING-LEFT: 5px;cribe from this group, send an email to: -unsubscribe

You all are making jealous----- talking about

heat pumps & AC's ... All week long I've been feeding the woodstove!!

Ken cuts the wood on w/e's & I burn it during the week........ it's

been chilly enuff here to have the woodstove going 14 hours a days!!

& yes we have electric heat but I'm too cheap to turn it on- why pay

for electricity when you don't have to!??? Most of the peopkle up

here who use electric or gas heat are paying thru the nose for it on average

$300-400 -- a month..Gas rates are bad enough up here....Reg gas for $1.60

= per gal!!!!!! We don't even own an A/C----fans work real well to

circulate the air... Our house is partially underground & has very

good insulation.

Our bills for elect/ is about $75. monthly....

use to be more when we had the hot tub turned on...but the heating element

went out on it --- & Ken hasn't had the time to fix it...... so it's

hot baths for me..... Showers in the summer months,

which we only have 3 mos. of nice weather(which

I hate) I grew up in So Calif. & it hardly ever rains down there.......

but like I said before I DO like the rivers & trees, etc. Down

there it was sand & sage brush<g>

They're pretty harmless creatures. Their radar is pretty good, although I remember one time my brother and I were fishing right by a bridge where the highway was going over and there were lots of bats. One of them flew right into his head. I don't know if the bridge confused his radar or what, but it was pretty funny, at least from my perspective. I don't think my brother laughed as heartily as I did... :) -dz-

dz----I'd never heard of fruit bats either til we moved into this one house

& it had a small barn - more like stalls for horses & the doors(outside)

had been open for quite some time & when we closed clinging to the

back of doors were a couple of these colorful bats - you didn't couln't

see the their colors til they let loose & flew off in search of the

dark again.....these things scared me to death as they were quite large-

& Ken told me not to worry as they were just fruit bats.....they were

the size of a bird & their underneath were a bright gold-orange-red

color......Ken said they're quite common here in the NW....We live in NW

Oregon not far from WA.....btw- we also discovered or should I say uncovered

a bunch of bats in the attic of the house----these were the common dk gray-black

type.... We found them when we cut a hole in attic & were putting in

a stairway-so we could put in flooring for another room.... these startled

me too as they're so quick & darting...it took them sometime(seemed

like a long time to me) to find the door out of the house

my Mom & Dad used to live in the foothills just out of Yuma.....When

Dad got sick & Mom had other problems(she'd falled down & broken

her hip) & laid out in the sun--this was in Aug....My brother couldn't

be bothered(his excuse= he was wrking) he lived about 70 miles or so from

them in CA I had just happened to call down to talk with Mom &

noticed she had a weird edge in her voice -so I asked what the problem

was & she told me your dad isn't feeling-never said anything about

her ordeal......I called my brother(waste of time) & only got the answering

machine- he was out of town(but not in AZ) So I caught the next flight

I could get out of Portland---I couldn't get a flight til mid-day the next

day.....Well up here the high temp was 59 when I got to San Diego

to rent a car for the trip to Yuma..it was a warm & windy 85(the Santa

Anas were there--high windy conditions for those of you who don't know

what a Santa Ana condition is) By the time I arrived in Yuma it was

118..... But it sure felt good to me!! I was down there for about

3-4 wks until I could make arrangements to place Dad in a Care Center(he'd

had a heart attack the night before I left) & it pretty much

crippled him up......most of the time his brain wouldn't function.

But he did manage to talk with me before I left. I had to feed him

when I'd go to visit....he was refusing food from everyone else!

My brother visited him once & wouldn't get near him let alone hold

his head up(Dad's) to feed him.

this jerk of brother also deserted my Mom(sent her up here) She

had quite a few strokes-- but she lived with us for over 2 years.....til

she had one too many strokes & had to be placed in a Care Center.......my

brother's reasoning for doing this to his parents --he is scared of death......he

probably should be as he's sure to go to hell

To me I have no brother!! Him I cannot forgive!!!! Sorry-

that's it!!

Isn't that sad when people don't even care about their own family? I know my brother's step children have not seen their dad in years. He didn't come to his son's graduation. I met a couple of the aunts and uncles who showed up, they're embarrassed about their own brother as well. I was in Milwaukee a couple of weeks ago to see them and I guess their grandma had died, they had just had the funeral. My sister-in-law told me her ex didn't show up for his own mother's funeral. He lives right in town. I feel mostly for my niece and nephew, it must be hurtful to think your own father doesn't care about you. We have accepted them into our family as our own , my brother has been with them since the kids were 3 and 6. They're 19 and 16 now. -dz-

Do you run through each day on the fly?

When you ask "How are you?"

Do you hear the reply?

When the day is done,

do you lie in your bed

with the next hundred chores

running through your head?

Ever told your child,

"We'll do it tomorrow."

And in your haste, not see his sorrow?

Ever lost touch?

Let a good friendship die?

Just call to say "Hi"?

When you worry and hurry through your day,

It is like an unopened gift....

Thrown away...

Life is not a race.

Take it slower.

Hear the music

before the song is over.
