There are seat belts on the bus already and I already suggested that I would

put him on and belt him in. I also requested a seat buddy from the

neighborhood and seating right behind the bus driver. They are still worried

about

his being so small, he is only 28 pounds, but I will continue the good fight.

That's ultimately what i want, and I agree with you eith the HS bus. Here,

even the junior high bus gets out of control, but I will deal with that

issue when the time comes. One year at a time is enough for any mother to take

lol!!

WHooHoo I just came from Micah's CSE meeting and we got everything we

wanted. He will be going to a regular kindy for a half day in Sept. to work up

to

a full day after Christmas. He will be getting a push in teacher consult,

an aide, all his therapies right after his 3 hour day. They initially said

it would be a problem but then said the elementary school should be able to

work it out. We will meet as a team before school starts in less then a month.

The only problem I may have is that I want him on the regular bus and they

said they didn't think they could do that because he is so tiny it is a

safety issue. I said he is not the first little one to go to kindy. They are

going to talk to bus company about putting a car seat on the big bus. They

tried to say that they couldn't put him on if it was against the law. My

argument will be, if they come back that they can't do it, is that New York's

new

law is that every child under 7 is to be restrained in a car seat, so what are

they doing for all the 5,6 and 7 year olds. I know the bus doesn't seem

like a big issue but the kids around here all know and love Micah and I think

he

is just as safe on the big bus, why rock the boat. Anyway I am one happy

camper. Oh and he will be going back to kindy next year. This is almost like

a dress rehearsal for the elementary school because they don't have a kindy

inclusion class, so now they will. This year we can work the kinks out so

next year should be smooth sailing...I can dream can't I lol!!!

Sounds like you had a great transition meeting! Good for you!!!!!!

That's pretty much what we asked for for in kindergarten, but

didn't get the therapies after the 1/2 day kinder.... however, OT and PE

were done as push in, so she was only pulled for speech. We didn't have

a bus issue in kindergarten because we are only a mile from school (aka

" walkers " ) However, last year (and this year too) we have been

relocated to a different campus while they tear down and rebuild our

home school. rides the bus with her sisters (seatless, as

she's now about 55 lbs) and it's been great. The social aspect of

riding with all the kids has been wonderful for ... in fact,

the bus passes arrived today, and she was soooooooo excited..... " Mom,

let me see my new bus pass! Oh, and it has my picture on it! " Good

thing she doesn't know it means school starts in 3 weeks, LOL.

Our district had car seats and booster seats on the preschool sped

busses (though they wouldn't write it in the IEP because they couldn't

guarentee it, in case there was a change in busses and the sub bus

didn't have a car seat). One time they showed up without a car seat,

and I just grabbed 's from our car, wrote her name on the side

with a Sharpie, and put her on the bus. Driver said she couldn't use

her own personal car seat, and I told him that was his problem, showing

up without one, and he needed to take her to school The was pretty much

the last time the bus showed up seatless. I also informed the teachers

that if there wasn't a seat on the bus coming home that they were not to

put her on it, just call and I'd come get her. That never happened.

Then the district went to some sort of 5 point harnass/restraint belt on

the sped busses, and took away all the car sears. Fortunately,

was about 40 pouonds at this point, so it worked OK.... she

didn't slip out, but she did fall asleep on the way home, and was in

quite a heap amongst the straps, LOL.

If transportation won't put a car seat on, I'd buy an extra (cheap) one

and send it back and forth each day...... someone will most likely be

meeting him at the bus and putting him back on, so they can carry the

seat. Maybe if the school gets tired of carrying a car seat back and

forth, they will put some pressure on transportation to provide one.

Maverick rode in a regular, full sized school bus when he was 3 yrs old. We

had a carseat that we provided and sent with him each day.

When he went to the inclusive preschool, the bus was set up to transport

typical, wheelchair,and other sp needs. The seats had special 5 point

harnesses hooked up to him. I was nervous about that since at that time he

was getting out of his regular carseat, but I examined them and they were

very secure.

In elementary he didn't ride a bus, we live right across the street (don't

you think the school just LOVED that? I was a drop in mom BIGTIME!).

In Jr. High we had it written in his IEP that he would ride the regular ed

bus.

Now we are heading to HS and I am wondering if it might not be safer for him

to ride the sp ed bus. He knows most of the kids and I won't have to worry

about him being picked on by the other kids. The busses here are out of

control. The kids are just so wild. My 16 yr old rides that bus and the

stories are frightening just for HIM riding, but then with Maverick.. yikes!

knew Maverick very well. She had control over all of the kids and often told

me that Mav was the best behaved.

When the transportation found out that we wanted Mav on a reg ed bus they called

and said that they needed to place a Sp needs child on her bus. She said

fine and THEN they informed her that the mother was difficult to deal with. She

asked who it was and when they told her it was me she just laughed and told them

that I wasn't difficult to deal with, I just wanted what was best for my child

and I wasn't afraid to go after it.

I don't think that you who have the " higher functioning " kids intend to make us

feel that our children are lacking. It's just human nature.

It's actually like with parents are kids with NDA children. You always feel

like your child is lacking if he doesn't do what little ny next door is.

loving. He is ery social.

You know I looked at the kids at the suaree and did make some comment on how

each of them is different from each other- each with their own set of

strengths and challenges.

Like is not athletic at all- she cant climb, ride a bike, swim, etc.

I remember when she was about 5 or 6 we used to go to a park with another

little girl her age also with DS. Well the other girl was climbing to the top

of

the monkey bars and was fearless on all the equipment. couldnt do any

of it. I remember then feeling bad for amanda and wishing she could do

something fun at the playground.

but here we are about 10 years later and amanda still cant climb, but she can

speak and read and use computers and has the guts to sing in a church choir

every sunday with sometimes 200 people present. She also can have fun at the

playground by swinging on the swings sometimes for hours.

We have to look at each of our kids- know where they have been and how far

they have come- sometimes with more challenges than others, but always with a

sense of perserverance way beyond other people. Think about all that some of

our kids have been through medically and how they pull through and manage their

lives in remarkable ways.

I know isnt it great to meet people and then read their posts in their

accents? I like and Sharon's accents a lot and cant read their posts

without

a little southern drawl.
