Sorry to say I did not find those guidelines helpful at all. My aldosterone or

renin was very normal even on Maxzide(a diuretic). Dr. Grim even mentioned that

Mazide would cause my Aldosterone to go higher. My endo has not demonstrated

Conn's at all. My BP is normal 99% of the time. Two CT's have shown my adrenals

to be fine. At what point do you start to test for other things. How many more

potassium pills do I have to take before they realize that it is NOT

WORKING.What about a full endocrine work up? Why don't they look at all my

symptoms not just low K? How can you solve a puzzle with only one piece? What if

I have multiple pituitary deficiencies? They would never know cause they don't

test! I have totally BAD responses to Inspra & spirolactone maybe that is cause

I don't need it. Sorry for the fustration but why my endo is do-daddling.... I

am suffering and have been for years. I just don't see the harm of testing for

other things especially when I have been more than accommodating! Again I

apologize!

Trust you are DASHing which will give you 4000 mg/32 =115 mEQ with having to take pills and the low sodium will help you retain K. When your blood K is that low it will take maybe 12000 mg to replace your body K enough to get it up to 3.5 say.CE Grim MDOn Apr 23, 2009, at 3:50 PM, slesfam1@... wrote:NEW UPDATE Today labs for was 2.8 on k and magnesium was low too! What your team needs to do is to collect a 24 hr urine for Na, K and creatinine and measure your K on the same day.  That will tell if you are losing K in your urine or not. Renins and aldos are not needed for this test.  You should not be taking any diuretics for at least 2 weeks before this. How often a day do you vomit if any?How much do you sweat a day?How many BMs do you have a day?Any family Hx of low K or periodic paralysis?CE Grim MDOn Apr 23, 2009, at 8:19 PM, slesfam1@... wrote:Sorry to say I did not find those guidelines helpful at all. Yes that is right, I am not on spiro or inspra. The spiro made my heart beat so

erratically and I was soooo nauseated. I felt like if I stayed on it I was not

going to make it! With inspra as soon as I took it I had a VERY BAD headache! It

reminded me of when I had toxemia after the birth of my last child and had a BP

of 240/115....not good. Yeah my bp since that toxemia has never been a problem.

The 123/85 was at the docs office right as they rushed me in. When I get the flu

or if I am in a lot of pain then it will go up to about 135/95 but for me that

is kinda normal. Now I have gained alot of weight since I have developed these

issue( now 209lbs) a that probably has a lot to do with my bp. The weight gain

is sooo not normal for me! After all five kids I never weighed more than 160. My

blood sugar is awesome which amazes my docs! lol When I stand though I get a

sharp stabbing/pulsating pain that lasts 20 or 30 sec and affects my vision.(it

stops me in my tracks). My very uneducated opinion is that I have multiple

pituitary deficiencies. So I am trying to follow my docs protocol and when she

gets no satisfaction ...she will have to test other things. lol It is like I

have but with weight gain, weird huh? Now aren't ya scared ya asked? Hee

That confuses me so much sorry to say. Is sodium the bad guy? and why would you

need to ingest that much potassium. I would think if something is not not

working right, no matter what ya throw at it,its still not going to work. Is it

the idea that you consume soo much potassium it over powers the force that cause

the problem to begin with? What about a deficiency of ACTH cant that cause low k

that does not affect aldosterone or is independent of aldosterone? Also I would

think i would show some improvement in my k with all these supp, not going down

right? Thanks for your patients REALLY!

, I drink a lot of low sodium V-8. It is 570 mg K per 5.5 oz can. I think that's easier on my stomach than

K in pill form. I don't know how

you stand your K that low. I've

been in the ER with K = 3.0.

I agree with the 24 hr urine. My pcm (not my endo) is calling me tomorrow to

tell me what additional test he wants and I asked for that specifically. I don't

vomit at all. I cannot breath without the diuretics and my eyes about swell

shut. So I would love to stop it but since I am kinda fond of breathing ...I

stay on it.lol I don't sweat at all and have flushing and extreme hot flashes. I

have about 2-3 bm a day right after i eat due to my gallbladder

removal.Sometimes it is nothing but water so to speak but that does not happen

often. No family history that I know of but I don't know my real dad and my moms

family, well we are not close. I did get hit by a car going 45 at the age of

twelve and hit my head real bad and was knocked unconscious. Did you read my

story? In my moms family the women have a history of benign salivary tumors. My

Grandmother, mom, sister and I all had them on the left side. Some where higher

others lower. My tumor was in my parroted gland. We also have a history of early

menopause. My grand mother went through it in her late twenties and my mom was

done by forty two. My sister is in premature ovarian failure at 28. That is all

i know.

Thanks natalie

Thanks Val for your concern! I am not making it .....not with any good quality

of life. I sleep constantly and every day is a battle that I slowly feel like I

am losing! I do what ever the doc say and they look at me like I am being a

drama queen. I have a everything to be happy about EXCEPT how I feel.I don't

even enjoy taking a bath and I have the very slowed cognitive functioning. I

should not drive but do..I cannot work in my yard it SUCKS! I just want to cry!

PS I drink those too yummy! ;)

From 's test results, I

don't see how she has PA (ARR = ~2.5 as I recall). What else could be causing low K?

Sodium IS the bad guy until you

figure out why your K is low.

Sodium pushes K out of the cells and your body excretes it. The less sodium you take in, the less K

gets pushed out. That's why we keep

telling you to get a 24-hour urine with K, Na, creatinine. It is important to see how much K you're

excreting. Be sure they do a blood

K the morning you take your 24-hour jug in for testing.

Dr. Grim, should it also include

the tests for pheo??? Could this be

a pituitary issue?

Most likely diuretic use/abuse and not DASHing.CE Grim MDOn Apr 24, 2009, at 12:23 AM, Valarie wrote:Sodium IS the bad guy until you figure out why your K is low.  Sodium pushes K out of the cells and your body excretes it.  The less sodium you take in, the less K gets pushed out.  That's why we keep telling you to get a 24-hour urine with K, Na, creatinine.  It is important to see how much K you're excreting.  Be sure they do a blood K the morning you take your 24-hour jug in for testing. Dr. Grim, should it also include the tests for pheo???  Could this be a pituitary issue? Val From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of slesfam1att (DOT) netThat confuses me so much sorry to say. No your wrong Dr.Grim, so wrong. I have been off all diuretics before and no

change. I DO NOT vomit, drink, use laxatives AND I eat alot of high k foods. I

don't sweat too much and don't have loose stools. How can you say that is the

only options! Not only is not accurate but it is hurtful!

Ah well that clarifies things a bit for me. I was just making sure that you

don't have PA/Hyperaldosteronism. Since your blood pressure isn't elevated, I

guess you do not. Now as to what *is* wrong... yeah, as you said, I'm scared I

asked haha ;-)

Going to have to agree with having those other tests Val, Dr. Grim, and others

have mentioned. Plus DASH diet! I think you are at the point where you need more

concrete information, which the tests will provide.

I do believe it was up but no where near what it was after. Matter a fact I do

not even remember him saying about it so I might be wrong. I so agree with Sam

that further testing needs to be done and some that should have been done

already(24 hr urine). They only concern about the DASH plan is I am concerned

about restricting sodium when I am already low. Something is going on there too.

I already go out of my way to restrict sodium as it is, as well as eat more high

K foods. I am already taking about 6000mg(if my conver is accurate) a day not to

mention what I eat and drink. Any other major changes would not be advisable

with out more info.

I am going to go ahead and get that done. My husband has sleep apnea and has the cpap machine, so I know a lot about it cause of him. I am just curious why the added concern for this in my case. Can having sleep apnea cause higher blood pressure? I do wake up 3 to 4 times a night for no apparent reason. My husband does not though. Most of my problem is getting to sleep because my mind is just wired and won't shut down. Plus, I feel my best at that time too. I stopped all caffeine and and late dinners to try to help but no change. Now my best, is in comparrison to how I normally feel, which is crappy. I go to bed same time all the time and get up at the same time too. I do know that I generate so much heat from within so when I sleep, I have to have a fan or I will have an asthma attack. Flushing is a major problem too. I only tell you this so you have a clearer picture of malfunctions! lol Another thing why would you think my BP could be low? I have a BP machine at home and have since my bp problems 11yrs ago. When at home I always have a BP of 115-120/75-85. But at the doctors is when it seems to go up I guess it is nerves. My BP would probably be even better if I'd lose some weight. However, I have never thought of my BP as low. Now I have tried to moniter my BP when I stand up cause of the head pains upon standing. Sometimes, I do catch about a 5 point drop when I stand but it is not consistant. I have been on BP med like topral(I think is its name) for the odd time my bp went to 140 at the docs office...I guess he did not believe me. It made no difference so the doc took me off it.Thanks Again!> > >> > > , I drink a lot of low sodium V-8. It is 570 mg K per 5.5 > > oz can.
