Hi Gail,

Wonderful improvements! And, in addition to the curve

This is a “before” pic, after the initial surgery, and the expansion. If you look at the expansion photo, you will see 2 gray rectangles towards the top of the rods. That is how much the rod was expanded! Almost an inch!

Her spine looks like it has straightened some too!

I have had major surgery involving electric cautery since having my ICD implanted. The Medtronic guy came and placed some sort of magnet over my Icd, effectively turning it off for the duration of the surgery. (At least that's what I think they told me!) In any case, all went well.

Has anyone had any experience with having (minor) surgery where they have to shut off or re-program the ICD? Having a skin cancer removed on my scalp, requires an electric cautery, which interferes with the ICD.

yes i ahve a shuntto drain off csf off my brian when i ahve it replacement or a infection in it and need sugeyr they ahve to shut off the icd !!! however with mine they usealy have the paddle patches on me but that is not to say they will for you ! but my haert is known for goign out of rythma alot ! then they turn mine back on before i wake up ! when sugerys is done my doctor waits till theere ready for the sugery to start and i am in the or room before turning it off ! they do that because the tools they use mainly the corderiaser inferfears with the icd and cause cause it to fire so they turn it off it can still pace if your doctor leaves paceign on it will only if your heart get to low or to high btu it wont be able to shock my doctors do that if need be ! i ahve had mnoir sugerys to where they shut off the icd ! they

watch me extra closely durign that time my ep doctor usealy attends my sugerys so she can just watch my heart rythm and do anythign nessaery your icd shoudl still keep your heart above the low limit and under the high by paceing but it will not shock ! this also depend on your doctors preferince ! in my exprincives my doctor always left paceign on just shut off shockign part ! this prevent you and the doctor from getting unneeded shockign expricines ! you can email em if you want to good luck with your sugery i hope all goes well this informmation may not be what you doctor does it's just what mine has told me and has done ! please do not take this that all doctors do the same your doctor should advise you exately what they are turnign off and when they will turn it back on and the precation they are takeing durign the time it is off this is only my expricines and there for

shoudl only be taken as just that ! stacie,23 shocking life for shocking people !prelda <prelda@...> wrote: Has anyone had any experience with having (minor) surgery where they have to shut off or re-program the ICD? Yes, I have had major and minor surgery with my ICD... The first they did have a Rep standing by to turn off, then turn back on my ICD. The other surgeries, the Rep told the Doctor to place a magnet over my ICD, this enables the ICD as long as the magnet is there. Once the magnet is lifted, the unit resets itself and all is okay. I know kinda scary, but I am living proof that it does work and ya don't need the Rep.

Good luck to you and try not to worry - you will be in good hands with the Docs around you.

Have had my ICD shut off a few times for medical procedures. Never aproblem

or even anything to note about it.

From California where the difference between a surgery and a procedure is

about twenty-five thousand dollars and having it in a sterile operating room

vice a room that looks like some psycho-inventor's garage.

Bill and others,

Has anyone had a

CAT scan of their chest since they have the ICD? Did it require anything special be done with the ICD?

I have the same

questions about an angiogram.

Bill, Thanks for

the definition of surgery and a procedure. I had always wondered about that.

I wonder why the

doctor’s can never seem to find the results of tests performed at a hospital or

ordered by a previous doctor?

Do the Echo’s and

Stress tests performed at the doctor’s office really provide better information

than those done at the hospital or are they just a profit center for the

practice?

Besides my ticker

problems I seem to have developed into a Doubting and am at least

slightly paranoid. Maybe real

paranoid!

Yes. Had a CT scan. No problem except for artifacting

in the scan because the metal reflects the radiation.

You can't have an MRI with an ICD.

I had two cat scans immediately upon oming home from the hospital with my new ICD. was first, and she nosed around the bandage, but seemed pretty sure there was no Meow Mix in there. Next came Heidi and she just came by to see if my belly button lint was as large as her hair balls.

I scared my chinese cardio when I told him I had on my chest. he has trouble with english pronunciation and thought I said MRI on my chest.

From california where my cat scans are not shoo tabby.

I have had CAT scans done and know that they are ok....it is the MRI that you can't have done because of the magnet issue. I have also had an angiogram since ICD and no problems there either (unless you count the long time on the hard flat rock of a table and then need to not move for 4 hours after).

and others,

Thanks for the

information. I have had three

angiograms before the IDC and that being still for what seems like forever wasn’t

the most fun. I can remember the

one time when I finally could move and they asked me if I wanted anything. I said it would be great to sit in the

chair and watch them put fresh sheets on the bed. I love how warm it is laying on that rock hard table while

the doctors and nurses are all wearing jackets or sweatshirts.

I am trying to have

my next question ready for the doc the next time he suggests something. I can’t remember who the wise person

was in this group who said to have copies of everything but I am sure starting

to understand that records we keep will be in better shape than those the doctor

keeps. My eye specialist is the

first doc I have been to with electronic filing. It seemed like he could click and get instant access to my

files. Of course he doesn’t have the

same huge file that the heart doctors have. My plumber suggested another angiogram since he couldn’t

find the report from the last one.

I hope he was just having a bad day or I might be searching for another

plumber.

From the Kentucky side

of Cincinnati where it is cold and icy and I am just happy to have electricity

and heat. There are still over 55,000

customers without electric, which means without heat for most of them. It is currently 11 and getting

colder. Makes the procedure room

feel warm by comparison.

Just a reminder that 2+ 2 = 5 about 50% of the time if AVS is not done.

Again take them a copy of my paper everytime you go to give to any newbies.

Their next Conn's will be better managed.

Remind them that I have b een doing this for since 1963 and worked with Conn.
