Hi Jeannie,

I am on the same day as you...as far as I can tell that veggies are

fine just as long as they arent listed as carbs such as potatoes,

corn etc. I try to eat alot of brocolli (I love brocolli), green

beans etc. We just have to make sure of what we put on them...skip

that margerine and cheese sauce...LOL

I LOVE broccoli also, I eat it EVERY night with dinner and I have a

HUGE bowl of it.

I believe it was Serenity (one of the others on this board) who told

me not to complain if I start turning green.

Broccoli is VERY good for you.

The only other thing I'd say is just watch what you put on them or

cook them with. The " added " things may add up in the long run, but

for the most part veggies are our friends!!

Welcome! I'm Bev, mom to Danny, 11, DS, and his three older sisters. You

are in good company here, especially for escape artists/runners. C.

(originator of this list) and I both have boys who run off in search of

adventure, so we can swap stories with you. There are others who have had

run-offs from time to time, also.

Danny's oldest sister seems to finally have him on the right path for

toileting, but that is a very recent development.

Does Carla also pour gallons of milk down the sink, turn on all the

lights, and line up all her toys?

Welcome !! This is a great group, full of support, ideas, and humor!

Your asking for a baby who would stay a baby for awhile really hit me. When

my first child became " mobile " , she never wanted to be held. I remember

asking God for another baby, one that I could rock longer. Wow, He did

answer my prayers with Karrie!

This thread reminded me of when I was younger ( about 12yrs old or so) ,

we used to spend a few weeks each year with family friends. They also

have a ds girl. I recall one xmas after spending 3-4 weeks with her, I

asked God to give me a ds child. Well, many years later I got one. The

phrase " you must be careful what you wish for " ran thru my head several

times over the next few months. Some days I though that God had cursed

me, and allot of the days I know I had been given a blessing. I thank

God every day for my little man, and my wonderful hubby- who helped

create our miracle. I am very glad that I asked God for BJ.

When we told our family friends that we had a ds baby, Janice said to me

" God only g ives special kids to special mums. " Everytime I get down in

the dumps over anything, DS related or not, I think of that statement,

and I then look at BJ and think how wonderfully blessed I am.....and

then I thank God again ( we don't get to church much )

And when someone would make a statement like " oh it must be hard having

a disabled child " I would usually answer " well mine is a baby for much

longer than yours, so no I don't mind at all " .

This is so true. With , I had an AFP that showed an elevated

risk for DS but the sonogram didn't show any markers for DS. But it did

clearly show a penis. I had really really wanted another girl and spent

much of my pregnancy wishing for another girl, thinking wouldn't it be

funny if the US was wrong. In a sense it was, but not in the way I

expected! In any case, Nicky is very much the baby I hoped for, very

mellow, and he sleeps well, I really couldn't have a better baby.

I don't know if I've told this story here before or not. But one of my

older son's favorite books is called " Flap your wings " . In the story, a

bird couple find an egg in their nest and an alligator hatches out. The

father bird says " it's in our nest we must feed him. " One night while

Nicky was still in the NICU my DH said " I feel a little like father

bird in Flap your wings, Nicky's not quite what we expected, but he's

in our nest, we must feed him and teach him how to fly. " After he said

that I knew everything would be ok.

Your post just touched me so much! I have Bethany with DS who is almost

4 months – and my DH and I went thru sort of the same thing in the NICU

– we were so upset that everyone we called/saw for the first time cried

– and we had just had a baby! We kept saying – even though she’s not

what we expected, this is our baby and we love her please don’t cry!

I’ll have to see if I can find that book in the library.

communication program? I'm sure you're very knowledgeable about all the

various type classrooms.....just curious. And where do you live?

K, feel like you got the third degree??? LOLOL

<< Hello everyone! I've been receiving your emails for a couple weeks and

finally decided to say hello. My name is Gigi and I am mom to two

beautiful children. My oldest, , 6 yrs old has Down syndrome and

I've really enjoyed (and can relate) to many of your emails! The potty

training and pooping in the bath especially! I am looking forward

(haha) to 's ACC next week -- I'm requesting a change in placement

to a program for children with Autism and expecting some resistance from

Thanks for all your words of encouragement!

That's great Gigi!!! Maddie goes to school via personal cab. I used the

autism piece to say that she couldn't be in a bus which would take twice as

long. There is a TEACCH school very near the school she goes to now, but it

was definitely not for her. It's fabulous that this teacher has such a

good reputation. We ALL know how very crucial that is to a successful

program.

Good luck!!! And keep us posted!!

Donna,

Yes, my classroom works on daily living skills. We start to transition the

students from the elementary program which is pre-academic focus and the high

school which is a community based class.

The Autism class is not at his home school -- where he is now is. It is about a

20 minute drive by car- who knows how long for the bus to get him there. The

teacher there is really phenomenal- creative, dedicated, knowledgable. Her

class is based on the TEACCH philosophy.

S/L is integrated. OT is integrated, SI focus. It is the " baby " of our co-op,

so the money is being flooded into the program to provide what is necessary to

make it a success.

Hi Gigi, sounds like you did your homework on this one. If you got the dx and

they have room for I would say it's a go. Wish I knew what to do

sometimes. I am always wishy-washy. Rochelle's Life skills teacher said the

autism class has many behavior problems so she thought her class was better.

If that teacher is as good as you say I'd be very excited. Good luck and

Welcome.

I went back about a month after the initial onset. I started training (lightly)

shortly after (I was on 80 mg then). Now at 15, I'm running 3-4 days a week,

lifting 3 days and swimming 2 days a week as well as fighting 5. I think thats

the key for me stay active but not to over do it.

I'm stationed in Philadelphia (recruiting for an ROTC program). I was supposed

to ship out in Jan (Im attached to the 101st Airborne Division) but I got the

disease in the middle of DEC. I went to Monmouth University my freshmen year of

college (1993) and played football for them. I'm from and living in Southern

NJ (exit 3 NJTP) (1hr 45min) or so from Ft Monmouth.

I am under a civilian doctor's care as well as monthly trips to Walter Army

Medical Hospital.

Thanks for the welcome and offer.
