Guest guest
Oh yeah, some say you don't know what's in the organic sugar since it hasn't been processed, so you don't know what you are adding to your brew. jan > > I ordered my first SCOBY from Anahata Balance & Organic-Kombucha. Guest guest
Jan, I am not one of the pros on the list, but my instinct tells me that since you seem to really be agonizing over this (and causing your poor bod who knows what kind of distress?), why not throw it all out and start over fresh, clean, and new? I can't imagine that saving what you have is worth your peace of mind. Kindest regards, Peggy Re: New to the Group Hi Chad, I am a newbie, but could tell you that the Happy Herbalist prefers organic sugar. See: http://happyherbali st.com/kombucha_ brewing_guide. htm The only thing I could find against using decaf was a post that said about the chemicals used to decaf the tea. I just tried a green tea decaf and I don't know if it was the problem (so many possibilities) , but it never fully fermented. I read a post, not here I don't think, that said it was ok to use Lipton, because the staples are stainless steel. If that's the case, Lipton advertises that it is naturally decaf'd. Of course, the pro's could tell you better. I sure wish one of them would come on and advise me whether to dump all of my brew or not. jan > > I ordered my first SCOBY from Anahata Balance & Organic-Kombucha. Guest guest
Jan, Sugar cane, when grown organically, pressed, and dried, creates pure, un processed living sugar. White table sugar however, is grown with toxic pesticides, and chemicals, and then processed, stripping it of all its nutritional value. It is then heated, destroying any living vitality that it had! White sugar is a product that has such powerful adverse effects on the boby it could be classified as a drug. It's one of the reasons to detoxify our selves with Kombucha. Guest guest
Hi Chad, I was just repeating what I've read. I use turbinado for my reg. iced tea (I use Agave for it, too), but use the white sugar because of what I have read. I thought maybe they were talking about bacteria or something, but I really don't know. I had orig bought the turbinado for my KT. I would like to know how many use organic sugars. Maybe if there isn't a poll about it I can make one. jan > > Jan, > > Sugar cane, when grown organically, pressed, and dried, creates pure, > un processed living sugar. Guest guest
hi Chad- i believe that the scoby uses the caffeine and sugar for the fermentation process-it feeds on caffeine and sugar. so, by the end of it you have very little caffeine and very little sugar. i wouldn't be concerned about the caffeine since it will no longer be there....you'd get a pretty imbalanced tea in the long run even if you didn't have problems right away. i've read lots of cases of people having problems with sugars other than white sugar. especially if you are just starting out, you may want to stick to plain old white sugar for now, and get a few scobies going before experimenting too much. i say this because i experimented after my first brew cycle and had to go back to my supplier for more-i hadn't yet discovered the problem with metal and i set my scoby in a metal pie plate to divide it and it turned BLACK. had to throw the whole thing out and wait a couple weeks to get a new supply- now i've learned to keep one going that is just normal (as many have said they do here) and experiment with others- good luck! welcome to a new addiction! holly bechiri I would like to know what caffeine has > to do with the processes if any. Guest guest
HI Chad, I know it's organic (it's not liquid/juice, though). What I said was that I orig bought it to use for KT, but then read that I should use white sugar. I, also, read that the caffeine content is the same after fermenting. (I am book-learned (and internet), I am not experienced in brewing KT yet.) Have you checked out: http://users.bestweb.net/~om/~kombu/FAQ/homeFAQ.html http://www.geocities.com/kombucha_balance/ jan > > Jan, > > Turbinado is organic sugar (sugar cane juice). > > Chad

Guest guest
Folks....don't confuse " organic " with how a cane is processed. Organically grown cane can be processed the same ways non-organically grown can be and vice versa. There can be organically grown refined white sugar...but that rather defeats the purpose of growing organically as the refining process uses chemicals to achieve the final product. See the link for a more detailed explanation... http://www.epicurious.com/cooking/how_to/food_dictionary/entry?id=4795 At least that's my understanding... Guest guest
Hi I recently started using again Organic Cane Evaporated Cane Sugar... My first experience with it was bizarre a foul smell which came back again on another brew despite using a different SCOBY AND white sugar this time... So the source of this smell foul was not the organic sugar... So fat the brew smells simply wonderful. My take on this is that the " things " in the Kombucha SCOBY use the sugar as food to produce those wonderful acid and other compounds that make up Kombucha Tea... That the White refined Sugar is pure sucrose is not much of a problem for them, they just transform it into things our body can use to its benefits... I am not certain however about what happens to the real nasties that could be in the White Sugar? Do they remain their wholesome nasties or are they transformed in less deleterious forms? I know for sure the White Sugar would not bring any great mineral substances... So I have taken the safe road. I will use Evaporated Organic Cane Sugar... it is a living food as compared to White Sugar. Evaporated Organic Cane Sugar seems to make great KT.. It cost more but really my Gallon of KT cost me in term of ingredients much less than a Gallon of Commercial Soda (name your poison here, Coke, Pepsi, etc) and it helps my health... SO the few dollars more that Evaporated Organic Sugar cost should not be a concern... Guest guest
#1 -- we live in a different world today. We drink clean water, we have the ability to shower, and we understand the importance of cleanliness. In the times of rampant disease these were not the cases. #2 -- it is very hard to be anti anything, you have to make up your mind and stand strong. Personally, if Diptheria were rampant in my town, I would quarentine our family the best I could, and then I *might* get that vaccine because the disease is rampant. Does that make sense? In other words, why are we shoving this many shots into our children when the diseases aren't even rampant any longer? http://gettingbacktonatural.blogspot.com/2007/07/list-broken-down-of-number-of-v\ accines.html -- if your child were following the recommended schedule this is how many vaccines they would be getting. #3 -- you can't go back once a reaction from a vaccine has injured your child. http://gettingbacktonatural.blogspot.com/search/label/JRA Be strong, know that you aren't alone, and keep in mind that he best ideas in the world were once the acceptable way to go (for example, slavery) it took years and years for everyone to get on the bandwagon that it wasn't acceptable or even humane. One day we will wonder how we were duped into the biggest marketing ploy of our lives = vaccines. Oh, yeah, and WELCOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! New to the group Hi everyone, my name is Vida and I am new to this group. I have been married for 1 year, and I have a beautiful 3 month old baby boy named Rasheed. Before I gave birth I knew I did not want to vaccinate. At the hospital I refused the Hep B vaccine, which was so strange to the nurse. Then I didn't worry about it. However, at his two month check up, after I argued with the baby's doctor a while, he scared me and my husband into vaccinating. We gave him the pcv, Hib, rotavirus vaccine, and dtap vaccine. I managed to get out of the hep B again and the polio vaccine. Nothing happened, not even a slight fever, which is good cause I was really scared. However, I now know I made a mistake and I don't want to vaccinate any further. Atleast, I don't think I do. I'm unclear on the hib and pcv vaccines. If you read literature they seem to be effective and necessary and with minimal side effects. I'm also unclear about tetanus. Can someone help me through this pls. I also want to say that being anti-vaccine is very difficult. When you say you don't want to vaccinate your child everybody looks at you like you're some kind of nut. My brother in law has been sending me (and my husband, and convincing him to go against me) links on articles written about crazy people like us and how we don't believe in vaccination because we never saw devestation from the diseases in question. I know, however, that I am seeing devastation from diseases like diabetes, arthritis, autism, and cancer...just to name a few. He is also sending me links on how vaccines cured the entire world of smallpox and polio. To take on an anti-vaccine position you definitely have to be strong and expect a lot of mean contradiction from everyone.
Guest guest
The harassment and terrorizing resulting from refusing vaccination is nearly exactly the same as denying infant baptism hundreds of years ago. At that time the authorities were not concerned with the salvation of children, they were concerned with being part of the Religious-State system of the Papists and later on the rival Protestants. Those that refused this spiritual poison, particularly the Anabaptists, suffered the wrath of the evildoers. And so it is with the physical poison of vaccination today, the concern is not the health of children, but rather conforming and being obedient to the System. Welcome to the group! Guest guest
Two facts! In the first year that the polio vaccine was introduced, about 50,000 new cases occurred among the vaccinated population. Only about less than 10% of the world population ever received the small pox vaccine. It takes a real stretch of the imagination to believe that the vaccine stopped small pox. Guest guest
Joe: That is a very interesting comment: only about 10 percent rec'd smallpox vaccine. Do you have a link for that, or where did you find it? I have always found that comment to be misleading, that vaccination stopped small pox. I rather think it was people waking up to cleaner living conditions and quarantine. Re: New to the group Two facts! Guest guest
> Hi and welcome to the group. I'd be interested in seeing some of those links, just to see what exactly they are saying/claiming. You can contact me off-line for that. What's stupid about this argument is that most of what we vaccinate for were never really big diseases. Out of the pantheon of shots we get, only polio ranks up there as something people were terrified of. Mumps - no big deal. Measles - no big deal (you know it's no big deal when you watch an episode of " I Love Lucy " and some kid having the measles is used as a plot device, and everyone treats it as " oh well, so-and-so has the measles, now somebody will have to take their place in the show " rather than, " OMG, somebody has the measles! Run for your lives!!! " Rubella - no big deal. Chickenpox - seriously no big deal, and better to actually get it because you get immunity then against shingles, which is much worse. Hep B - that's for drug users and prostitutes (and their johns). Tetanus -- pretty rare and not communicable. The big killer diseases were things like tuberculosis, typhoid, scarlet fever... none of which we vaccinate against. And the new vaccines, for things like pneumoccocal illness are tackling minor things that were not common for children to get.
