i read that fluoride is much more effective post eruptive than pre-, but it shudnt be limited to application by dental proffesionals as in the options, it cud be at home (low risk children do not need proffesional application).. so im not sure

My kefir is always in the refrigerator--after it's been made of course--once the

24 hours are up, I remove the grains, then stir and pour the kefir into a

pitcher that goes into he refrigerator. I have a smoothie every morning. I

have not had the kefir plain.

Hi ,

It is my opinion that if your vitamix heats the milk kefir higher than

110 degrees, that would have an adverse effect to the living bacteria in milk

kefir. Might also effect the mk at lower temps too.

Mixing (like with a stick blender or hand mixer) should not effect the 'life'

but could make them really, really dizzy - lol.

Seriously, heat is just one way to kill living bacteria.

The vitamix is a great machine, but it needs to be used with some reserve.

The big issue with the vitamix is that it runs at such a high speed that it

can break the cells of the food open against the wall of the container. The

blades spin at 120miles/hr. I have seen raw milk fat cells break completely

open and the sides of the container become covered with grease (fat). If you

use a vitamix use the lower speeds with live foods so they are not damaged.

Heat can become an issue if you run it for a long time. It will boil water

but it takes near 15 mins. The speed of the machine kills the cells before

the heat gets them.

We make raw milk yogurt smoothies all the time, just don¹t kick in the turbo

(high speed) switch. Or add the live foods last after the other stuff is

ground up. :)

Hope that helps.

Rae ... right on! I wondered about the separation of them as it is the

complete matrix that reproduces as a whole .. if they are " dizzy' and

" scattered " they may not be able to " regroup " and work! :) (seriously

... but who knows? I think that's a possible reason the commercial

, I too live in Colorado. As you know, raw milk is very expensive to

get here and not easy to find close by. I've been using Farmcrest dairy 2%

milk as it's fresh with no preservatives and my grains have done well. Hope

that helps

So, if I were to go for the raw milk deal here in Colorado, it is so

convoluted with legal horse manure that I could not guarantee that I could

supply my grains with raw milk every day. My question is, what happens if I

do raw milk 5 days a week and pasteurized milk 2 days a week, or whatever it

turns out to be.

Also, my wife is terrified of change, and she says that she is afraid of the

germs in raw milk and she says that our boy would turn his nose up at the

Hi ,

I really wanted to do raw also but it just didn't make sense logistically and

financially. I got over it and make some really delicious kefir with regular

pasteurized homogenized grocery store whole milk. Raw would be great but I

figure that turning this milk into kefir brings it to life so really, kefir is

the next best thing to raw.

:))) Funny, we turn our noses up at the store milk. Can't even buy it anymore.

We are blessed to have found raw milk for $4 per gallon. GOOD stuff. I don't

think your boys will turn up their noses. Other than the yummy cream at the

top, which you can shake in easily it looks the same, and tastes superior.

HOpefully you can convince your family to at least try it. We also do a mix

between raw cow and goat milk and so far my grains have been fine. I do it only

b/c that's our only option with getting our milk, and I do notice that my kefir

is more consistent and thick and creamy on the cow milk than the goat, but not

sure how it would react between raw and heated milk. As long as it's fed it

should be fine.

,

Have you visited the rawmilk site?

http://www.realmilk.com/where1.html#co

There are numerous places to get it in CO. Raw milk tastes GOOD and definitely

better than store-bought. If you don't tell your son (or maybe even the wife :-)

they would likely not notice any difference.

The primary visual difference is that the cream rises to the top and you have to

shake it each time you pour the milk. As for the germ issue - raw milk is like

any other raw food. Keep it cold, take care of it, and will take care of you :-)

If there is a location close to you I would say give it at least a try! You can

always go back to the store-bought stuff.
