This client has done several sessions of

F3 beta. I was inhibiting both alpha and theta. He had large alpha surges that

would show up. Since we started the training, he has had no depressive episodes.

Not sure if that means much at this point. I was getting very little feedback

from him as to any changes. So I changed to c3/F3 as

you recommended. In the middle of the session, he appeared to be going to sleep

and I commented to him. He came out of it and reported what

sounded like a dissociative experience like falling

asleep or just being “gone.”

This was information he hadn’t

given me before. Evidently, “falling asleep” inappropriately is a

problem for him. He is an attorney and at times has trouble staying awake in

the courtroom.

Any suggestions?

Mark,

I have had nice results with a depressive client using C3Fz for 2-3

conds then moving to T3T4 for a nice balancing effect. The C3Fz was added

after several T3T4 sessions and the B really seems to brighten his affect.

I also have done a bit of energetic bodywork with this client but feel

the real shift happened once C3Fz had been added.

Hope all is well with you.

Mark,

Why wouldn't it mean anything that he hasn't had any depressive episodes since training started?

I would keep doing beta, look at blocking 2-5 or 2-6 if you are not already doing so. Do short conditions (maybe 2-3 minutes) and try several sites during a session: e.g. T3/Fp1 for a few conditions, C3/F3 for a few conditions, maybe F3/P3 for a few. In other words, work various areas, always seeking to speed up the left side.

You might also have him do some tasks during some of these: naming, reading aloud, writing/journaling. These are all good beta generators.

Mark,

Here are some things I'd try:

1. Focus more on theta/alpha (?) reduction than on Beta production.

2. Try a bipolar hookup at C3/F3 training as above.

3. Ditto at T3/Fp1.

4. If you are using 19-22 for Beta, try 15-18; or vice-versa.

5. If there is an alpha imbalance frontally, train Alpha down F3/Cz or train Alpha up F4/Cz.

Keep us informed. This sounds interesting.

Hi Mark,

I have used C3/FZ, also good success with C3/F3 with some of my depressed

clients (training beta up). I also discuss diet, (more protein, less carbs),

and exercise. We always discuss how they crucial it is to incorporate those

pieces into their lives. The combination above with NF really work well. I

also use a technique that helps individuals to look forward, not backwards

and to make goals.

Turk...thanks babe for the words of encouragement....and i know what you are saying is true...the x-periences we endure make us stronger, more empathetic people.....i just didn't think my life would end up this way..

Sounds like i need to stop feeling sorry for myself and concentrate on the blessings i have...wonderful children, supportive friends (that would be you guys! ) and the fact that i am alive!

And as far as the prom is concerned....i would love it if you were to let me know that is really is happening...you know, even though i joke alot..i think it would be wonderful!! Having something like that to look forward to is the kinda medicine i need!!

I love you for your interest and support...and yes, i am a hopeless romantic..

Hi Joanne

Im at Bradford too! Theyre really not helping too much though. Ive

been stuck up here on the third floor of Trinity C for two weeks

now. Ive had an appointment with Liz e but they really are

trying to get me into the last flat in Bradford Halls but its not

adapted for me and there are no disabled flats left because I came

through clearing (Im first year undergrad) and my serious problems

only started a few weeks ago with my good leg collapsing under me.

Im still waiting for my medical notes to arrive from my last GP and

letters from my consultants but without them I cant get any help.

Ive lived here for a month and its a total nightmare. On top of that

they still havent finished building the Phoenix building which all

of my lectures are in so if I do manage to get to the ground I have

to scale the stairs there too. Do you have CP too? Liz spoke of

another girl with similar problems to me, was it you she was talking

about?

Hey Anne

Sorry you're feeling so down.... you sound in bad shape at the

moment. At my worst time, probably about 20 months ago I used to

hobble off to work sit all day in pain, without being able to

concentrate, bunk off early and hobble into bed for the evening. At

one point, just the slightest touch of the sheets sent a sharp pain

through my kneecap. There was nothing for me but work and bed. That

was the lowest for me...

But it has got steadily better since then. I can't claim to be back

to " normal " yet, but I really am a lot better.

I DO hope you too will get better. In fact I don't believe you've

done so much damage to yourself at the tender age of 20 that you

can't even stand up! So at the moment you probably have all sorts of

inflammatory responses going on in your knees which are set off at

the slightest thing.

Obviously this needs to be gotton under control. I'm the one who's

always preaching excercise, excercise, stretching streching etc...

etc... But this can only be undertaken once a degree of " stability "

has been achieved with the inflammation in your knees.

If your PT excercises are causing you so much pain, I think perhaps

you should back off for a while, (a few days) and actually get some

rest. You should also review your PT regime. I'm not sure who your

PT'ist is but maybe you need different excercises.

The excercise which I first started doing (18 months ago!!) was a

simple straight leg quad strengthening excercise. You simply sit on

a chair and lift one leg up, keeping it stretched out straight, until

it's horizontal. Hold for 30 seconds and lower back down. repeat a

couple of times. Do this a few times every day. You can even add an

ankle weight (1kg say) to make it a bit harder. This excercise

strengthens your quads and kind of stabilizes the knee.

Well that was the first excercise i did, and I needed it because of

the muscle atrophy which resulted from non-use of my legs. I think

this excercise marked the " turning point " (when I began to get

better). I don't do them now because I can put weight on bended

knee, which is a more effective strengthening excercise, but it

sounds like you need something which is non-knee-bending to get you

started.

I think you need to see your PT again, or a differnt PT altogether to

re-assess your excercise program. The straight leg quad excercise

above is OK, but I suspect you've got a knee-tracking problem because

you mentioned tape. So a simple quad excercise might not be quite

appropriate - you would ultimately need to do some excercises to

correct the tracking problem.

I do actually have a friend who's an excellent skiier... and I was

stunned to find she has CP. She gets round it by doing some

excercises to correct her knee-cap tracking. She says that as long

as she does the excercises she's OK, can ski, dance etc. Without the

correct excercises she goes downhill..... quickly. I was stunned

because I would never in a million years have guessed.

Anyway, look, back off for a couple of days, then try the straight

leg quad excercises, make an appointment to see your PT, re-evaluate

your excercise regime... and... eat chocolate...! I found that

helped when I was lying in bed....!

Take it easy...

Hiya Joe

Youre right in the guess that my knee is tracking. My Cp knee (right

leg) is tracking to the rightand my PTist suggested taping to keep

my knee from wandering off of its own accord. Shes given me two

excersises. One is to slide down a wall by bending my knees then go

back again and the other is to put my bad leg on a step and then

slowly put pressure on it then back again. I know theyre decent

excercises because when i do that i can feel my muscles franticly

forcing my knee cap towards where its supposed to be. The thing is

my knees arent the only problem. Ive basically had the CP for 11

years now untreated and its changed the way i walk, I lean on my

left leg pretty heavy and always have. Now my left knee which I

thought was my good one has collapsed under me. Its being crushed

under my own weight. My left ankle is perpetually swollen and my

left foot is far too painfull to take my weight. My left foot is a

giant bruise and the arch is completely gone, if I try to stand on

it it feels like my foot is breaking down the centre. So now if I

stand on my left leg I falll over and if I stand on my right leg I

fall over. Its a catch 22. Most of the time I walk like I have a

stick up my ass :-). My right kneecap has been worn down to the bone

and the muscles are wasted because Ive avoided using it in years.

This is why I cant actually stand up at the minute even with two

crutches. My PTist has reffered me to a senior PTist so Im hoping

for some results. Bradford University is not being helpful at all.

Theyre trying to force me into a makeshift flat that is completely

unsuitable for me but they think its the best idea despite the fact

that I keep saying no so I'm going home for a bit at the end of this

week. Be around my family and doctors who know me and what to do

because I cant cope being trapped up here. My docs given me some

strong medication (Co Drydramol) to help me get about and to sleep.

Wish me luck.

Hi Anne

I'm a second year undergrad but i live at home. i have CP as well but

it hasn't been that bad recently up until the last few weeks so i

haven't told them at uni.

I know what you mean about stairs tho, it kills me walking up and

down them and I have a good leg. How long have you had CP?

Anne, please try to hang in there. Five months ago I had absolutely

NO muscle in my right leg. The muscle had atrophied to the point

that even if I contracted it as hard as I could, you would feel

nothing. My left leg was holding me up. As a result, like you, I

have developed problems with both knees. After 5 months of pretty

intense PT (2x per week for 2 hours each time) and some " at home "

work, I have improved dramatically. The pain is still there, but so

much less. The horrible burning pain is almost gone. 5 months ago,

there were times when I was almost suicidal. You MUST stick with

some kind of stretching and exercise plan. I have found that, as

mentioned over and over again here, the major pain was coming from

all the areas AROUND my knees. So, instead of blindly accepting that

I might have little cartilage left and was doomed to a life of pain,

I realized that I needed to keep stretching and exercising which

could help strenthen and heal the areas around my knees. I still

have a long way to go, but for the first time in a long time, I am

not consumed by pain. Please Please stick with a program and know

that it might be a long time - I'd say 6 months to a year - before

you see any type of results.

Hey Joanne

Ive had CP for 11 years now. What about you? If your knee is

actually giving you bother you should speak to the disabilities

office. Even though you might not consider yourself as disabled (I

know I dont) they do offer help to people with medical conditions

like ours. I know I not exactly their greatest cheerleader but they

do try to help in a very odd way. Because of the pain killers I take

I get extra time during exams and Im also allowed to move around

during exams and lectures if I need to (my knees get very stiff if I

keep them still too long). What about you, do you take painkillers

that affect your concentration? Does your knee hurt when you're

sitting still too long? Apart from that if you dont want or need

that kind of help you can let them know about it, they keep it

confidential, just incase you do get worse. The University has a

million stairs all over the place and I know from experience what a

terror it is to get around here. They're trying to get handrails on

the stairs so people wont hurt themselves. Anyway you must have such

a high pain tolerance to cope with moving about this Uni with CP and

before they started the whole building thing too.

Wow.

Hi Anne

I've had CP for about 5 years now. It isn't too bad for me at uni tho

cos the lifts in the Richmond Building and the Chesham building

actually work and thats where all my lectures are. plus i've found a

way of getting up and downstairs without bending my knee.

I think i mite go to the disabilities office and just let them know.

I just thought it was for people who were blind, deaf or in

wheelchairs,etc.

I understand how you feel tho, it was bad enough being on crutches

when i did my ankle in, and i only had one flight of stairs to climb

at home and i could go up them sat down. Have you spoken to your

personal tutor and told them. or perhaps see your stage 1 tutor.

Hope it gets better for you.

Hi Anne!

You've got your work cut out now answering all these messages!

Well it seems your priority is to get the muscles in your right leg

(the original " bad " one) working again to take the strain off your

left. Also correct the tracking of your right knee. As I said in an

earlier post, fix the root problem and then the rest will then have a

chance to heal.

Please believe it will get better, because it will. Take a rest, take

the pain killers and then get on with the excercising (gently). I do

think it's important to fix the tracking in your right knee. The

excercises you mentioned simply strengthen the VMO, which would pull

the knee-cap more into alignmnet. But there might be better

excercises (I don't know!). Also if the muscles in your right leg

are so atrophied now the straight leg quad excercises will be good,

and non-pain inducing!

You could also try stretching the ITB? have you tried this?? The

ITB is a tight ligament-band (I think it's ligament anyway) running

down the outside of your thigh and can often be extremely tight

pulling your kneecap out. Please check out post #2903 on foam

rollers.

Just keep believing it will get better. It will...

Joe

PS - How do you know you're bone-on-bone with your right knee? Have

you been scoped, MRI etc????

Hey Joe,

Once again you're right on. The ITB on the outside of my right thigh

was pronounced 'too tight' by my PTist though she didnt give me any

excersises to fix that and I am going to get a foam roller because I

have a feeling it will help with the wrecked arch in my left foot as

well as the muscles in my right leg. Thank you so much for showing

me this!! The reason I know my right knee is bone on bone is becasue

of xrays an arthroscopy performed by my last consultant and the

wonderful loud grinding noise when I move my leg that makes people

around me cringe :-). When I had the last arthroscopy they flushed

out my kneecap and took out a fair amount of bone fragments that had

been worn out of the back of my kneecap and the whole condition

improved wonderfully. I didnt need crutches, the damn thing didnt

swell up so often and I actually could do sports without too much

pain, fantastic. Unfortunately my consultant died of CJD a while

back so Ive been transferred to a new guy who think's we were all

dreaming and theres nothing wrong with my knee. He then preceeded to

shove his fingers as far under my kneecap towards the sore part as

he could. What a prat. I was carried out of the hospital that day

and Ive been avoiding the place ever since though eventually I will

have to go back and see him, I have a feeling I'll end up going for

him with my crutches!

Ive found I dont really have much time to do my excercises after I

take my painkillers because they knock me clean out after about 45

mins! I have dug out my old quad excercises and Im gonna try them

when Im able.

Hi Joanne,

Go for it! If you do tell them then at least they will know if your

knee ever gets worse especially if you say its been bothering you

more lately. You'll have someone to watch your back. They deal with

any medical problem, it doesnt have to be a something like being

deaf or in a wheel chair. I have told my personal tutor, I got Carl

Heron, and hes been very supportive making sure Im ok and working on

my behalf to make changes so that I can live as normal a life as I

can. Have you told your tutor about your knee? It might help. How do

you get down stairs without bending your knee?

Hope it doesnt get too bad,

Anne

Hi Anne

Your new doc doesn't sound like he's listening... You really need to

see a specialist who'se gonna take you seriously and do a thorough

examination/diagnosis! Hard to find I know... I wish you could get

down to see my guy in Milton Keynes.... You wouldn't need to whack

him with your crutches!

Two more things you could try:

ICE!!! I'm sure you've used this already, but ice helped me a lot.

It numbed down the horrible burning pain I used to get very

effectively. I know Doug isn't keen, but I think it's useful cos it

kills the inflammation and allows you to get on with using the

joint.... I like it anyway...! ice.... ice... ice....

Knee-braces. There have been quite a few posts recently about knee-

braces (in particular cho-pat). You might find these useful? I keep

hearing (very) good reports about the cho-pat (never tried it

myself). I wonder how the " stabiliser " type would work for you - this

has a hole for the knee-cap and I think it's actually intended to

keep the knee tracking properly. This may be better than tape???

BTW, NEVER use a knee brace which doesn't have a hole for the knee-

cap!

Those pain-killers sound good!

HI Anne

I haven't told my tutor about my knee, i didnt think about it really.

I kinda keep my knee straight and then kinda do little jumps down the

stairs.

Hope it gets easier for you

- yup this is what it is going to take...working through and finding out

what your issues are. Because that is what it really is all about. What issues

are driving each of us individually to eat the way we do? Its a long journey,

but one that is so, so worth it!

Take Care,

Heavy metals in your body can definitely cause depression whether from

vaccines or amalgams. Find a holistic doctor and dentist. It will do you a world

of

good!

Please find someone that you can talk to in person-- such as a counselor,

minister, comprehensive care center, 12 step depression group, etc. Please

take care of yourself nutritionally with a healthy diet (try to avoid

sweets, caffeine, alcohol).

Don't be embarrassed. I don't think there are too many on this list who could

say they haven't been depressed at one time or another in their life. It's

nothing to be ashamed of. My advice is to find a good classical homeopath.

Your body is trying to tell you something...

I dont want this vaccination board to become bombarded with non-

vaccine issues and get on others nerves plus I am slightly

embarrased bringing this subject up in great detail for many eyes to

read. I will just summarize what I am feeling. I am finding that

small problems to others makes me want to end it all but I want help

as I have 2 small children that needs me. I dont want them to be

without a mom plus I want to be the best mom I can to them. I need

some really good advice. Thanks in advance.

I am wondering if the silver fillings in my mouth being removed

could help or am I just going crazy.
