I got mine on the 8th! It burned like crazy this year! Anyhow my Dr told me to

go ahead and get it as they already had a confirmed flu case in the hospital!

Hey Everyone,

Just got home seeing my new GP (will update on that later) and got my flu shot.

The doctor said that the CDC has advised all practices that if they have the flu

vaccine to give it now. They are predicting an early start to the flu this year.

They didn't say how bad it is supposed to be but it is going to be earlier than

usual. So, if you are able, get your flu shot ASAP!

Its really interesting because last year I got the flu, after not having had it

(and getting the flu shot every year) for the past 25 years. When I told my

pulmonologist, he said, " Don't get the shot right away this year. Wait until

late Oct or early Nov, because then you'll be protected for longer. " Its the

first time I have disagreed with him. He's the doctor, and maybe he's right, but

I always get the flu shot as soon as I possibly can. It would make me very

nervous to wait for a month or more. I don't think I got the flu because I got

the shot too early, I think I got the flu because last year's shot didn't

provide enough protection. A LOT of people got sick last year, including many

people that got the shot. I was exceedingly lucky that I made it through with no

complications, but I don't want the flu again this year!!

If the flu season is starting earlier this year. Does it end earlier

too? I know the flu shots only last for so long. I heard that last

years batch of flu shots did not protect against the flu that went

around. A lot of people got sick.

Does anyone know if they are still going to force the flu shot on children who

are entering preschool by Feb. March or later?

It says you must get it in NJ from Sep-Dec31st.  I thought they do not

administer it after that?

Hi Guys - see link below for list of inactivated or killed

vaccines considered safe for most CLL patients. It also

lists the LIVE vaccines that should never be given to CLL

patients.

The list is from the excellent CLL Canada website. @

I believe that close family members should also not get the

live virus flu vaccine and that we should not be in close

contact with those who have had it. There seems to be

varying opinions about whether we should get the high dose

vaccine or the regular vaccine. I know that some have posted

that they received the HD. My hematologist recommended the

regular vaccine for me.

According to the CDC

" Can people receiving the nasal-spray flu vaccine LAIV

(FluMist®) pass the vaccine viruses to others?

In clinical studies, transmission of vaccine viruses to

close contacts has occurred only rarely. The current

estimated risk of getting infected with vaccine virus after

close contact with a person vaccinated with the nasal-spray

flu vaccine is low (0.6%-2.4%). Because the viruses are

weakened, infection is unlikely to result in influenza

illness symptoms since the vaccine viruses have not been

shown to mutate into typical or naturally occurring

influenza viruses. "

Here is my most recent experience with Noah and Aetna Better Health.

Has anyone on Managed Care gotten flu shots other places besides their primary

care docs?

Flu shots

Hi and Jacqleen:

In year's past I have been taking Noah to Walgreens or Osco for his flu shots.

I was quite surprised that Walgreens, Osco and CVS do not accept Aetna Better

Health for flu shots. We went to all three today.

I know I can use his primary provider (the one I don't really care to use) or I

can take him to his wonderful internist who will do it for no charge

anyway...but why can't Aetna Better Health contract with the local pharmacies,

where accessibility is obviously so good and so easy! This would make

prevention one step less of a hassle, in my opinion.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.
