So steph could an elevated tsh in conjunction with taking iodine and armour (or

other supp with external hormones) be indicative of being undertreated?

Iodine and zero TSH

I take 50 mg of Iodoral plus the supplements recommended. I've been on

90 mg Armour for about 8 months. My recent tests show a " virtually

zero " TSH, while the T3 and T4 seem to be midrange. There has been a

lot of discussion about Iodine raising TSH, but has anyone else had a

zero TSH?

I had one private reply (thanks!) to my query last week, but wondered if

anyone else has experience with this. Could it be the iodine, or should

I be looking at pituitary problems?

I'm 66, post menopause, and my other hormones are low, which I thought

normal for my age. I also take 15 mg of cortef for cortisol, which runs

low particularly in the a.m. I was having hypothyroid symptoms on the

armour, but my doc authorized an rx for compounded thyroid, and although

he threatened to reduce that dosage, he did not yet do so.

Any ideas?

No it's an indication that the body is trying to stimulate more thyroglobulin to bind to iodine and create thyroid hormones.

Feeling unwell can be related to so many things other than thyroid.

Low levels of:

Vit D

B12

Ferritin / Iron

Heavy Metal Toxicity

Candida

Mercury toxicity - Amalgam fillings

Epstein Barre Virus

Lyme Disease

Food allergies - such as gluten and dairy

The list goes one. You need someone who will look at you as a whole person and keep digging with you until you find the cause.

That being said - when I was very sick I jumped right in at 50 mgs. I did just fine. Even with adrenal fatigue. I don't think it is necessary to have a doctor. Years ago people "doctored" themselves when family members got sick. We have become so afraid that we will hurt ourselves w/o the almighty white coated doctor. They have a time and a place but remember they didn't always have the power they do now. Where you start is where you are comfortable. There are no correct levels.

Pat,

TSH does not measure your thyroid, and is a poor thing to go by

for dosing Armour. The recommendations are Free T3 and Free T4. Many have gone

for years with the TSH test saying they are fine, and still feeling bad. Find a

doctor, or order your own tests. You may need more Armour to get to the high

ends of T3 and T4. I am currently looking for a new doctor because mine

don’t test for the Frees, and won’t dose Armour based on that.

And another thing - if you felt well on Armour before and are not now. It may be the new formula of Armour which most are not tolerating well. No amount of Iodine will fix that. I had to switch to Nature-throid. I have not been able to lower my thyroid med dosage with iodine like some are able to but it is a very small percentage. Most of the time the damage to the thyroid gland has occurred so it is not possible to revive it to needed levels.

A good way to test adrenal vs thyroid or both is www.drrind.com - use his metabolic charting.

ThyroxineT4 - 4.5

T3 uptake - 33

free thyroxine index - 1.5

It is plain and simple malpractice. I had my thyroid removed and a dx of cancer and when I fired the ENT that did this and found another doc 9 mos later - he tested Ab's and I was positive for it. My doctor before only ran TSH & T4 for years before. Yet I continued to gain weight, had adult onset asthma, clear adrenal fatigue and more that are tied to serious thyroid issues. It took a goiter with nodules to get their attention.

With the internet, doctors are having to tow the line more and they are getting ticked. Their rhetorical answer is - you can't believe anything you read on the internet. Well I fixed my last end. I ordered my own labs and brought them with me. He physically shook because I had backed him in the corner with irrefutable proof that I was right.

How are they read?

Steph

Iodine and zero TSHI take 50 mg of Iodoral plus the supplements recommended. I've been on 90 mg Armour for about 8 months. My recent tests show a "virtually zero" TSH, while the T3 and T4 seem to be midrange. There has been a lot of discussion about Iodine raising TSH, but has anyone else had a zero TSH? I had one private reply (thanks!) to my query last week, but wondered if anyone else has experience with this. Could it be the iodine, or should I be looking at pituitary problems? I'm 66, post menopause, and my other hormones are low, which I thought normal for my age. I also take 15 mg of cortef for cortisol, which runs low particularly in the a.m. I was having hypothyroid symptoms on the armour, but my doc authorized an rx for compounded thyroid, and although he threatened to reduce that dosage, he did not yet do so. Any ideas? Jill------------ --------- --------- ------

Steph I applaud your gumption! That should happen to a multitude of drs from one end of the country to the other! Your previous comment was well stated too about people doctoring themselves and not being any worse for it. We have been brought to the place in our society to think that drs are the only ones that coule possibly care for our ills. Priorities are skewed and the system isn't right, especially for chronic conditions.

Not that I am aware of since all labs have their own ranges.

But you gave me T3 not Free T3. These numbers are not "lab ranges" but the ranges that I have seen people report when feeling well.

Well I agree with that. I was desperate. I needed answers because I was getting sicker and sicker and no one had answers for me. They just wanted to blast me with radiation to make my body conform. Yeah that would help.

I wish there would be more of a revolt to demand proper care. I have heard of others that weren't happy with the doctor's visit and refused to pay when leaving because any other service provider would be subject to appropriate care of whatever - be it auto, restaurant, etc. We let doctors get away with things that never should happen. My 2nd endo verbally abused me and I left each appt crying. That would NEVER happen now. I'd give him a piece of my mind and he would probably fire me. LOL!

One thing I would advise for anyone is NEVER go alone to an appt w/ a Dr. I learned that when alone, one is open to abuse, without a witness. Drs are a lot nicer when there is an observer!!!
