Hi and Welcome!

I think you will find a wealth of information and support here. I know I

have. Our is 14 yrs. old and was diagnosed with autism at age 6. We

have always thought that autism is 's primary disability rather than

the DS because of the associated behaviors and problems with communication.

started to say words at about age 1 and they were all gone by age 3.

At 14, he still doesn't have an effective system of communication, although

we are working with PECS and are hopeful. I know we will all appreciate your

feelings and welcome your contributions to the group!

Hi, Barb - and thank you for the welcome!

Ow, that doesn't sound like fun at all. I work in a physical therapy

clinic, and I see people with those illnesses all the time. I am

a " survivor " of DDD, myself! I used to have it soooo bad. I will

never, EVER in a million years forget what that was like. I still

have it, of course, but now it's manageable (after sloughing over

150# off my poor, tired little bod!).

Best of luck to you... talk to you soon!

Thanks for your information. Yes, one of my projects is " health needs

assessment of school age children in the context of the school health

advisory service " . I am in the process of collating information with a view

to completion in Nov. I would value any discussions or sharing information

on the process but am a little stuck on how to present the format for

report. I will be at the CPHVA conference in B'mouth, anyone interested in

meeting up?

Sure. However, there is a PH networking meeting at 3.30pm on Thurs. Would

this be appropriate?

Hi leslie, and welcome to our group. My name's ( I go by M because

there's two 's in ou group). I'm not that far from you. I live down in Ilion.

Maybe you've been down this way before. Do you have a store in Oneonta or do you

do totally internet sales? Forget answering that - I just went to your website and

browsed around. Very nice!! The name of my business is "Indulgences by "

and I'm new within the past year. I only do M & P soap right now. I love the

creativity of it. I love the soap, too. I also do bath salts, lotion bars, lip balms,

bath fizzies and hope to add more soon. I don't have a website - I'm concentrating

on local stores right now. I did two small craft shows but decided I don't really

want to do them. I found them to be too much work. But some day I may change

my mind.

I think you'll enjoy our group. We're very layed-back. We talk about anything

and it doesn't have to be soaps or business. So don't be afraid just to chat. Well,

my soaproom is calling me. Take care.

hi ! I know what you mean about craft fairs being a lot of work- kinda how I feel! we do some lotion bars, lip balms, salt scrubs too, but so far only for special order or shows... not sure if we will really get into that as much!

sometimes I feel overwhelmed by all the possibilities!

Boy, I agree with you about feeling overwhelmed with possibilities. I've

purchased so many supplies for things I want to try making and haven't

even gotten around to it yet. Some day......yeah, right.

Do you ever drive down to the Fly Creek Cider Mill? I was there yesterday.

I had a dr's. appointment at stown Clinic so I always make it a point

to stop in there. I LOVE THAT PLACE. I made the mistake of going in

there hungry yesterday. Boy, did I spend some money!! I love the things

in their gift shop, too.

Well, back to work....soaps to wrap.

In a message dated 10/12/2001 11:47:39 AM Eastern Daylight Time, Hi ,

Well so far we've done an endoscopy on him and discovered he had reflux and a rapid digestive system which we've been treating since 9/99, we've done yeast testing and have treated him for the yeast, we recently did our 4th test on him due to the news that chelation could cause yeast overgrowth and discovered some more that we've been treating for over 2 months. I know there's behavior problems with die off and he was exceedingly agressive for a couple of weeks but that abated. I don't know if the effects could still be ongoing after two months, do you? I too have been wondering if possibly his 2nd set of teeth are starting to come in since he'll be 8 in February and have made a dentist appt. How does one check for stones?

Thanks

A good functional behavioral analysis should also include medical investigations especially for people with limited communication skills.

Hi and all,

I am Lois-Mom to AKA JJ who will be 14 on Monday. he is

small for his age- 75 pounds soaking wet. haha! He was always laid back

with his autism BUT when he hit 12 we went thru a rough year and a half

with anxiety, agression and crying for no known reason. I think it has

been pubeity that caused this. For the last 5 months or so he has been

doing a lot better and now has a great team at his school. I also have

a 29 year old son and a grandson age 6 who is fine. Thanks, Lois (JJsmom)

, I have to say, your boy sounds like my 6 and 7 yr olds, especially my 6 yr old . With him, we have tried many things, and it works, but he's like a jekyl-hyde. He switches so quickly. He can be so loving, then he gets this look and boom, he goes off. My boys have put holes in our walls, broke several lamps, caused us plumbing bills when they stuffed stuff down our toilet. They have broken things, and the list goes on. They are better with all we are doing, but they still get wild at times. I look forward to seeing your files and gathering some new info. No matter how much we do or know, there is always something we haven't tried. We can all learn from each other. Thanks for starting this list, God bless, Sharon

Hi Kayte,

Nice to hear from you. It;so lovely to have someone who understands our

problems isn't it? I know quite a few people who have children with ds, but

it's a different kettle of fish altogether.

is a very loveable boy but also a very messy one. He wrecks the house

by tipping things up (especially water) and anything else he can get his

hands on , i.e. cereals - wet or dry, milk out of the fridge, cups of

coffee of tea. You name it, he will spill it. He never keeps his clothes

on and is often seen walking about outside. Imagine what everyone thinks.

Probably that we never dress him. He can say a few words but mostly food

orientated. He is obsessed with crisps and searches everyone's cupboards

whose houses we visit. He was doing very well with his toilet training but

has regressed lately and is having quite a few accidents, well maybe

accidents is not the word, I think he knows what he is doing he simply is

fascinated by it all.

-Lee has 3 brothers and 1 sister. 18, 16, 13,

and Katrina 21. As you can imagine, he's spoiled rotten.

How long have you known had autism? How's she doing? Fine I hope.

Look forward to hearing from you soon

I am not an MD. However my stones were detected by an ultrasound.

My suggestion, however, was to really do a general medical workup.

In my case the gall bladder stones produced extreme pain after I ate

a meal with animal fats. It took up to 2 hours before the pain

occurred.

In a Functional Behavior Analysis, one should also write down what

and when the child eats to see if their is any relationship with a

food.

Another example: I developed migranes from time to time. By trying

to figure out what I did before the migrains, I discovered that they

were caused by a persvative, EDTA, in miracle whip and other

mayonaise type products. By avoiding foods with EDTA, I no longer

get migrains.

Hi :

Welcome! I also have a 14-year-old son with OCD etc. although we

diagnosed him over four years ago. He also takes Celexa for his major

depressive disorder and it is working well. It seems to be helping to

drop his Paxil poundage - VBG!

We went to over a dozen docs before we found mental health

professionals who could help, and we already knew Steve has OCD, so

we weren't asking for a diagnosis! I would like to encourage you

to follow up to find E & RP treatment for your son. This has been so

important for our Steve. He still has symptoms, e.g. re-reading,

some tic-like gestures when he is O'ding (not ocding - VBG!) on the

computer, playing so many games.........On the other hand he has

gotten most of his life back from OCD and is making a surprisingly

smooth adjustment to high school as a freshman this last August.

Good luck, take care, aloha, kathy (h)

kathyh@...

> Yes, I am new.

> My son is 14 and was diagnosed a few months ago. I had suspected

for some time, but he finally asked for help. After an attempt at

therapy, he started Celexa and it has helped his anxiety a lot....now

until we can find a decent therapist, he is kind of on hold for now.

no clue as to what to do although they would certainly continue to

charge us while they figured it out.

Hi Margaret,

Thank u for the answer. Tara is 6 years old and has DS she recently undergoing

nuero tests because I thought she had Autism features. The doctors think I am

correct and they are labeling it pdd. They also think think she may have Landau

Kleffner Syndrome which may be why she isn't speaking. I;m Not really sure

about the Landau but I am sure about the PDD. Tara is beautiful she is my world

my life besides my son who is 4. I sort of think about her future and worry

what is going to happen when I am not around?

Hi ,

It's my turn to ask what is Landau Kleffner Syndrome? Oh, and welcome to the

list. Isn't it great?

Diane :)

It's scary to jump in on a list where people obviously know each other and

have shared a bit.

This will probably sound completely nuts, but what gives me the hardest time

are " handles " . When I started using the computer people used their real

names. Well, at least things that *sounded like real names. It was much

easier to associate real people with those real names.

I have a hard time visualizing " ImSoBlond " or " MyDogHasFleas " as real

people. I also have a problem remembering names, and trying to associate

them through handles is nearly a lost cause!

Sounds as if you've got your hands full, especially with the kids an

ferrets. :)<<

The ferrets are easy. The parrots are a lot of work! I realized it was

time to make a change when I was feeding them better food than we were

eating. You know you're in trouble when you refuse your pets some of your

food because it's not healthy for them. <giggle>

>>My scale has been hovering between 250 - 256 for over a year now, no

matter

how low I drop calories or how much I increase exercise until I hurt myself

again. Yet I still plod on. At age 48 it's a lot harder to get rid of the

excess pounds, especially when they're been with me my entire life.<<

My big problem has been allergies. I lost 75 pounds nearly 10 years ago and

kept it off through MOST of that time, even after having another baby. Then

I started becoming allergic to...the earth. Nasal allergies made staying

inside during " fire season " (we have bad forest fires in the summer) almost

mandatory. Then I started developing exercise induced allergic reactions,

which limited my activity even more. I'd (and still do sometimes) break out

in hives just by washing a load of dishes or folding a load of laundry, and

the reactions got worse, not better. THEN I started developing food

allergies. Nuts are the scariest (peanuts AND tree nuts) so that cuts out a

lot of prepackaged foods.

ANYWAY, despite all of that I *still* need to lose the weight. My doctor

tried to shame me into it, which DOES NOT work. So I asked him what he

suggested, since he was so darned smart. " Eat less food. " <eyeroll> I was

down to one tiny meal a day. I could hardly eat *less*. I knew even then

that what I needed to do was to eat more.

Ya know... there's a reason that the only doctor I see unless I feel

like I'm about to die an ignomious death by drowning in snot is a

chiropractor. HRM. Could be because... most Doctors seem to come off

like idiots lately?

I think it has something to do with Insurance. They see the patient,

but never really get to know their quirks. What makes them different

from the 'norm' that would necessitate treating them with something

other than the 'standard' treatment :/

Then again, my gynecologist refered to naturopaths as 'quacks'. Funny,

but the herbal supplement I picked up at Whole Foods (after 3 months of

research, research, research, and recommendations from a friend whose

father sells his own herbal teas) did wonders, where every single OB/

GYN had failed.

I suppose that's also why I haven't bothered seeing a nutritionist,

either.
