I'm afraid it's because of the threat of lawsuits. Nabisco doesn't do a lot of that either because most of that food is outdated and people WILL turn around and sue the company if they know it's outdated. My husband worked for them for 12 years and while we were allowed the damaged and outdated products brought back into the warehouse, we weren't allowed to pass it along to friends and family due to that possibility.

Seems Winco and Safeway prefer to throw out their seconds rather than donate them.

Oh, I see Gloria beat me to it.<G> GMTA!

The problem with our freecycle is that we have over 2000 members. I swear everything gets grabbed up within 2 min. of them posting stuff. Sometimes I don't even bother to answer because 5 min. after an offering has been posted is too late. I got the blender, my mini-trampoline, and breadmaker on freecycle because I put "wanted" posts on there and people responded saying they had one. I love freecycle but we just have too many people grabbing things up FAST! I once put up a post giving away a car that was shot...no engine, totally non-functional, and got 6 replies in 15 min. from people who wanted it. For a year I couldn't even find a garage that would tow the damn thing, but people on our freecycle will take ANYTHING! Imagine the number of replies if something actually still works!!

I know our food bank is listed in the phone book in the section about the town and area - with all the police, government, etc numbers. And usually the churches know where they are also.

How would one go about finding the food banks in the area?

Jenn, Meat is still an issue with me. I am mostly vegitarian, mostly raw. But I still crave red meat! I break down once in a while and splurge (you don't want to know how I eat it), though. Don't forget Freecycle! Join your local Freecycle list (go to www.freecycle.org and look for your area) and you'll be very surprised what you can get for free.

I use mason jars to freeze my leftover soups. They won't break if you leave about 1-1/2" at the top. Or, a trick my mother told me, fill it to within 1/2" then leave the top loose until it freezes and it won't break.

Hi Jenn. I live in dairy country too! If being near a dair farm is not enough to get you off of dairy foods, try reading the milk articles in the files section, and check out the links. I can almost promise, you'll never drink milk agian. As for milk subs, I can't stand rice milk, and avoid soy milk like the plague. But I make our own almond milk that is to die for! And so easy to make. Just put fresh organic almonds in a blender, cover with a good quality filtered water, add a little vanilla, and blend away. Take it and press/strain it through a fine weave cloth, and there you have it. Almond milk. You can even save the mash that is left and add to cookie recipies, or compost it. Nothing wasted. 4 cups water

1 cup soaked, drained & rinsed almonds

vanilla

dates to taste (if you want sweet almond milk)

Whirl it all in a high speed blender and strain through a mesh bag (NOT cheesecloth - won't work). That is only if you want a more milk-like milk some folks leave the pulp in.

I like to put about a tablespoon of coconut oil in mine to make it a little creamier and richer.

Jenn,

Regarding the rice milk, that’s what I drink as a milk

replacement. I quit eating dairy

about 7 years ago, and tried all the options to see if any of them tasted

and/or looked like what I was used to drinking (which at the time was skim

milk). I found the soy milks to be

a bit too heavy for me, although I do use them in my smoothies. Alone, soy milk tends to “feel”

heavy in my mouth, if that makes any sense. If you do use soy milk, or any kind of

soy for that matter, make sure it is organically grown. Otherwise, most soy is genetically

modified.

You can freeze stuff in glass, just be sure to leave about a

one inch space for content expansion when it freezes.

And as far as your boyfriend goes, let him prepare his own

meals. He doesn’t have to eat

the same stuff as you do. Prepare

what you want to eat, and if he doesn’t want it let him do his own. Maybe one day down the road, he will see

that you are getting healthier because of healthier eating habits, and he may

then want what you’re eating.

And it depends on where you live too. Some parts of the country have more available then other parts.. making it easier to shop organic, raw, etc..

This seems to be very true. A friend of mine just informed me that I live in one of only 31 states (PA) that can legally sell raw milk and dairy and I have a couple of those farms closeby. (They can't sell it in stores...only right at the farm). The organic stand I shop at is fairly expensive but, like I said...I dig in their basket of "seconds" and make out pretty well for the week. I'd starve to death if it weren't for our farmer's markets and a couple of Mennonite families that sell cheapo organic right from their farms and greenhouses.

Thanks Carol, that's what I wanted to know. Yes, heavy in mouth makes perfect sense to me. ALL the items sold at our local co-op is non-GMO. They wont stock it if it's GMO. Most of their stuff is also organic.

As far as the boyfriend goes, yes, I do believe I will try to change his habits by telling him "eat it or make your own". Though last time he made his own he almost caught the oven on fire, and he has in the past burnt things so badly in the microwave that it turned the inside of it tan/brown. 8)~

Thanks ! I feel SO much better after speaking to all of you here. I actually WROTE to one of the organic food companies (Delicious Organics), and explained my confusion to them over what to eat, what not to eat, and their reply was, and I quote:

"Well, that’s silly. Those things contain partially hydrogenated oils which are clearly poisons. We each have to make our own decisions on what we want to eat but personally we don’t eat any of that nor the soy protein isolate. And I don’t find our way too hard, most people have expressed the very opposite, that we offer a glimmer of hope and a way to ease into it."

Yes, indeed, they called me "silly"! Silly for being so confused and not sure of what's good for me and not good for me. That's when I wrote you guys... right after I wrote to them. You guys are MUCH more helpful, and LOADS more supportive! Thanks!

Hey, I've got to switch to digest for tomorrow, because I work all day, and I don't want my mailbox overflowing when I get back to it on Monday, so if you don't hear from me for a day, that's why.

soak the lentils overnite before adding Gloria. SuziMorningGlory113@... wrote: That is so cool, Gloria! I have a question. Can one do rice in a crock pot?...I got a great vegetarian crock pot book from the library. According to their recipes you CAN cook rice in a crock pot. However, they had a lentil soup recipe which I tried and after being in the crock pot for 10 hours, the lentils were still fairly hard. The soup was good, but the lentils themselves definitely weren't what I call "cooked". I suspect rice would come out about the same. The next time I'll at least pre-soak and even pre-cook the lentils a little

and I'd do the same with rice. The best bet for no-fuss perfect rice is getting a real rice cooker. I use mine constantly. ...Another little gem I got for free over 20 years ago and it's still going strong.

No cause of my migraines ever found. No brain tumors or such. I take low dose Amitriptaline. It's like 20MG or something, very small dose. Researchers are unsure why it helps, but it's often prescribed for people suffering from chronic pain. So, that's the gist of it, I have migraines that have an unknown cause, and I take a medication that works in some unknown way. :)

Amitriptyline (aka Elavil) works in the same way SSRI's (Selective

Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors, Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac, etc.)

do. They are antidepressant drugs known for blocking the receptors

in the brain that receive the pain messages from the nerves.

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant, or TCA. Antidepressants

work by raising the level of endorphins in the body; endorphins being

what the body produces naturally to stop pain. TCA's have been

around since the Fifties, whereas SSRI's have not. The majority of

research done on TCA's claim no lasting side effects or problems,

however SSRI's cannot make the same claim.

Don't get me started on SSRI's, LOL. Poison, pure and simple.
