Tracie,

Buy rice pasta, quinoa pasta, spelt pasta, etc., and eat to your heart's

content. Just have it with what's good for O's, and stay away from the usual

stuff. You can find this kind of stuff in health food stores.

Hi ,

These other kinds of grain pastas need some getting use to. They are an

acquired taste (just as your wheat pastas were in the beginning when you

were forming your own food lists as a child). But believe it or not, the

more you eat them the more you will like them. Eat small amounts at first,

then after about a year of eating the " other " pastas, they will taste most

excellent to you. Good Luck and hang tough!

Hi Everyone!!

I'm trying to change my eating habits to be more benificial.

Unfortunately, I am an avid pasta eater. I bought some pasta made with

rice flour in hopes that it would equal it's avoided cousin. Wow, was I

wrong. It was not good at all. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Hi,

Try spelt pasta, as a cousin to wheat the taste is similar and it

cooks/holds up much better than rice pastas. The brand I use is called Vita

Spelt, the color is darker than wheat but it's the only real difference I've

noticed.

Maureen,

I was planning to try to contact Dr. Parisier this week about another matter.

But I also know of someone that is a patient of his up in NY. My husband knows a

couple whose grandson had a choclea (sp?) transplant done by him a while back.

I will ask my husband to call them to see what he can find out.

Good Luck! I'll update you as soon as we find something out. don't give up on

seeing him -- I understand he's excellent.

> just got back from my 10 year olds family care dr.(the dr that diagnosed

cholesteatoma)I went to him because brian has had 4 surguries with 2 different

specialists(????)they thought they got it all every surgury.he didn't want to

see him again for 6 months . I felt his hearing was getting even worse,so talked

to the family care dr about referring to another dr, he agrees good idea,

although now he said after looking at his ear for me it has grown back quite

large(from only 5 months ago) I wanted him to see this dr parisier in nyc but

acording to his receptionist he dosn't except any insurance except

medicare????????? i said you have got to be kidding???? I don't understand

this???? does anyone know anything about this? please help,he sounds like a good

dr,but the insurance thing ,,, now i'm not so sure,do you know anyone who has

gone to him? I am in ny Thanks maureen

I can only say good luck Rosie and my prayers are with you. I do not understand the medical system in USA but here in Australia your brother would be admitted to a public hospital probably immediately. Although you don't have a choice of surgeon the cost is covered by our Medicare system. Keep positive thoughts and it will be ok. Audrey Help! Hi everyone! I've been really busy and haven't had a chance to visit much, but have been trying to keep up by reading the digests as they arrive via email.I received this rather desperate email from a woman that visited my web site today:"hi my name is rosie mitchelll my brother is 38 years old he has been diagnosed with cholesteatoma its eaten a place in his skull the size of a large egg we are trying to get help for him with the surgery he has no insurance and has no way of paying he cant find anyone to finance it please if theres any help out there and you knwo of it please contact me 704-394-6929 his name is roy centers and he lives in texas his number is 940-549-2228 please help him if you can thank you so much rosie"I wrote back and told her I would post the email here, and that I would also contact Vinny's doctor to see if he knows anyone in Texas. If anyone in the group has names and addresses for qualified surgeons that may be able to help these people please send the information to me. I told her that I would write to and contact doctors on her brothers behalf since I am not in a position yet to help myself. Hopefully we'll be able to find a doctor in Texas with a big heart -- if not, maybe somebody else with a big heart that might be able to help with the bill. Sounds like he was another 'late' diagnosis! Thanks,

Hi ,

I'm not sure about Texas. I know each state pretty much controls the

medicare and uninsured problems. In PA an individual without insurance can

get insurance through the state medicare system (at least my daughter was

insured through the state medicare system until she could get a job with

benefits). The insurance only covers urgent medical needs and you can select

your own doctor. There also was a bill passed by our legislature that would

help with uninsured/underinsured hospital expenses. The individual, not the

hospital, had to apply for the assistance. This usually took place after the

hospitalization.

Texas should have some kind of " hotline " that Roy can call to get more

information. If not, try calling the hospitals or the state insurance agency

for ideas on how to get aid. Don't give up. The phone book should have " blue

pages " for state and federal agencies that could provide help. There may

also be nonprofit organizations that will assist. What about the doctor that

diagnosed him? Doesn't he/she have any ideas about where aid can be

received? If the c-toma is as bad as it sounds, Roy needs help now.

I wish I could help more but advice is the only thing I can give you.

Good luck,

Connie

Hi ,

Larry and I still owe over $3500 from his first surgery in December

of 1999. After that we qualified for the Oregon Health Plan. Prior

to his 3rd and 4th surgeries, I had to quit my job and Larry had to

cut down to less than half time to qualify for any assistance. I

wish there was an easier way. I mean, what do you do, not have the

surgery and wait????? I am afraid this may be the story for the

rest of my life, considering how aggressive c-toma is. Larry has an

appointment on Tuesday the 30th, and I am just dreading it.

I hope this person is able to find help easier than what we had to

do.

Hello,

Teaching hospitals have wonderful resources for people

who have no insurance or are underinsured. Don't let

teaching hospitals scare you. Just insist on the

physician and the physician only.

One of the other group members (sorry, I've forgotten who) suggested a

research hospital which I believe is an excellent idea.

I've done some research and I found many sites that may be of help. I have

listed a few at the end of this message. Try contacting any (or all of

these), do additional research, and contact the representative for your

district. Perhaps parishioners at your brothers church can offer some ideas

or suggestions. Someone should be able to point you in the right direction.

Use whatever means you can think of to get information on medical

assistance. If all else fails, your brother can probably get a second

mortgage on his home to pay for the surgery.

Please don't send the x-rays to anyone. They are only needed by the medical

community.

Hi Connie,

That is some excellent information for healthcare in

the state of Texas. Looks like I need to compile

information like this on each state so that newly

diagnosed people have some resources on this site for

their particular state.

Any idea on how to make this easier on me? What sort

of search string did you use. I could use it for each

of the 50 states.

Boy, I'm starting to feel like I'm getting overwhelmed

with all of the things I would like to gather for this

site, but I am determined. Rosie's friend seems to be

going through what we went through the first time. It

shouldn't be that way.

Rosie,

We had no insurance when my husband was first

diagnosed. We were fortuneate enough to find a

physician that would work with us financially, and got

a grant from the hospital that covered the hospital

costs only. Physician and anethesiologist we are

still paying - sometimes only $10/mo. A nurse

practioner diagnosed my husband and then contacted the

doctor and explained our situation.

Good luck and please keep us informed.

Michele,

I used " healthcare in Texas " as my search string. Perhaps the Health

Department in each state government could provide information. Also, most

phone books have " blue pages " that lists individual offices under the Health

Department. I believe compiling data for all 50 states will be an

overwhelming task for one individual. I suggest that, if you have the time,

you list eligibility requirements for Medicare/Medicaid and provide a link

to individual state Health Departments. This way, you can provide valuable

information in less time and each participant can seek out the information

they need.

I agree with -- That is definitely

information that needs to be made available, and

easily accessible. I will start compiling information

to have on my web site as well. I haven't had a lot

of time to update it recently, but hopefully after the

next few weeks I'll have more time and will be able to

make a lot of additions and changes.

I think that a good start would be to get on the diet for her blood type and

start ridding herself of the toxins from eating the wrong foods. Except for

the really smart ones among us, I believe that most of us are here because

we've been in a similar place healthwise. I have also come to believe that

our diet effects our health far more than I ever thought. The diet will, at

least, make her feel better.

Being 44, she might also look at things like hair dye, meds, and other items

that might be putting toxins into her.

The doctors will treat her pain and throw pills at her.

This sounds like menopause, fibroid tumors or endometriosis. Many people do not

know that aching joints can be a symptom of the hormonal changes that occur in

our bodies as we get older. Weight gain is also common as ladies go through

this stage of life. Though she is technically " young " to be going through

menopause, women go through it as early as in their thirties.

The painful periods are a concern, however, and she should see a GYN who is not

" knife-happy " for a full evaluation, hormone panel including cortisol levels,

and ultra-sound. Fibroid tumors and endometriosis are painful, and could be

leaving her with lowered iron levels and a toxic body. Going off of the pill

could mean that her progesterone levels are low, too, which can also cause

fibroid tumors to develop.

A good book for her to read is by Dr. R. Lee, called WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY

NOT TELL YOU ABOUT PRE-MENOPAUSE. He also has a book that is called WHAT YOUR

DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT MENOPAUSE, but I like the first book I mentioned

better. It took me awhile to find a doctor who understood the principles Dr.

Lee presented, and who practiced them, but once I did, I have been much

healthier!

Of course, I do believe that she will feel better if she learns her blood type

and adopts a diet consistent with her needs. Lectins which build up in our

bodies can create arthritic conditions, as well as other health problems.

I hope this is helpful to both of you. I am speaking from personal experience,

not theory.

Best wishes,

Carrol

does not understand why this is happening to her:

FYI she is 44 years old, probably 50 lbs overweight, but works out a lot so is a

very " fit " looking person, though pretty big. She also is not on the blood type

diet, I do not know her blood type. She eats a very well balanced diet, no

junk, few sweets, lots of veggies and water, but probably very high in grain

type carbs (breads, pasta).

She recently went off the pill, and has been having cramps so bad she ends up

crying on the floor (and this is a pretty tough cookie!)

She repeatedly gets colds, which turn into major chest colds that she can't

shake for weeks.

She is now getting terrible pains in her shoulders and upper arms. She has been

to the doctor, does not have arthritis, yet Jointritis is the only thing that

gives her relief.

She believes these issues to be all unrelated, her doctor has no idea of what is

going on either. I think they must be related, she must have a systemic issue

of some sort or another.

Any ideas what could be going on, who should I refer her to, and could this be

an " Adrenal Fatigue " issue? I am seeing her tonight, will find out her blood

type, and talk to her about ER, but I think her issues go beyond diet. She is

really suffering.

I hope someone out there can help!

Hi ,

Is that because of the B vitamins in brewers' yeast or is there another

reason. I have heard that taking B vitamins will help keep mosquitoes away. I

don't know if that is true or not.

Hello e Carolyn! As far as I know, it is the amount of sugar that is

floating In the blood stream. The more sugar the more attraction. I'd

try brewers yeast tablets.

You would have to take it 3 times a day, several tablets at a time.

Love

Help!

Hi,

I am an O Secretor and wonder if any of you out there have any remedies

for

not only treating mosquito bites but also for preventing getting them!!!

I would appreciate any help you may be able to offer

Thanks

Carolyn

I can't recall the reason why, but it sure does reduce ones sugar level.

Bodybuilders have known about it and have used it successfully.

Hi Carolyn.

Yeah, the blood-sugar levels turn 'em on. B-vitamins, from what I've

heard the B1 in a large dose works well. From my experience it is

legit.

Wanna tease the Minnesota State Bird? Eat a banana before... although

the mighty nutritious banana has B vitamins it will make you the most

popular mammal on the block!

Here is what I found on Heidi's column.

" Here's an email message sent to me deep in the heart of West Nile Virus

mosquito land, aka Louisiana: " It's about that time folks--so thought I'd

send out this reminder!!!! OK, mosquitos...prepare to be repelled!!!!! Use

Bounce Fabric Softener Sheets...Best thing ever used in Louisiana..just wipe

on & go...Great for Babies Bob, a fisherman, takes one vitamin B-1 tablet a

day April through October . He said it works. He was right. Hasn't had a

mosquito bite in 33 years. Try it. Every one he has talked into trying it

works on them. Vitimin B-1( Thiamine Hydrochloride 100 mg.) If you eat

bananas, the mosquitos like you, - something about the banana oil as your

body processes it. Stop eating bananas for the summer and the mosquitos will

be much less interested. This is going to floor you, but one of the best

insect repellents someone found (who is in the woods every day), is Vick's

Vaporub. Plant marigolds around the yard, the flowers give off a smell that

bugs do not like, so plant some in that garden also to help ward off bugs

without using insecticides. " tough guy " Marines who spend a great deal of

time " camping out " say that the very best mosquito repellant you can use is

Avon Skin-So-Soft bath oil mixed about half and half with alcohol. One of

the best natural insect repellants that I've discovered is made from the

clear real vanilla. This is the pure Vanilla that is sold in Mexico. It

works great for mosquitoes and ticks, don't know about other insects. When

all else fails--get a frog! " I take a huge multi-mineral-and-vitamin

supplement everyday (includes B1), and I'm not much bothered by mosquitoes,

although I don't go out of my way to be out when they're out. Shay "

--

" Hi Heidi, To add to the mosquito question...on a local radio talk show

(which I missed part of)on West Nile virus, a lady phoned in to say that if

you take brewer's yeast mosquitoes don't like the taste of your blood. At my

nearest health food store, she was sold out of it that week! she added that

any B vitamin will also work. Anyone else heard of this? Jayne "

The last one also goes along with what said. And people in this small

town farming area that I'm in say if yo get the Avon Skin So Soft with the

bug repellent in it, that will keep the bugs away.
