Thanks ;-) I use to work in the medical field for 9yrs. My

panic disorder started than, so I had to leave. I no longer research

anything or read into thing's too much. I leave it all up to the

doctor's ;-)

God bless you, 3 surgeries? I feel for you. It really is a " Painful "

procedure, but am so thankful for the " WONDERFUL " surgeon I was able

to find. If anyone's in the NY area, I highly recommend the Eye Ear

Infirmiry. The reason for the six hour operation, was he was able to

scrape out everything, leaving nothing behind, nor having to go back

for second surgery. Nothing needed to be reconstructed, and made sure

he stimulated my nerves like every 5min. It was so warapped around

the facial nerves, I don't even wanna think about it. I'm so glad

it's OVER, and hope to never have to deal with anything like this

again. Very painful. You better believe I will be at the ear doctor

for check-up like every month for rest of my life....lol

I will also be sure to take such extra care of my ears. No water, no

nothing. How long do you keep this wonderful cup on? Cute little

thing I must say. Thanks so much for all your support again. I truly

appreciate it. Will be saying a prayer for all of you. OK, back to

bed ;-)

Congratulations on the birth of your son, that's great, what'd you name him?

Y'know, it could be a good thing not having a sense of smell, especially

when you need to change dirty nappies (just kidding).

Maybe once your body gets back to normal (hormones are such wonderful

things) your symptoms will settle down more.

I agree about the pred. if only there weren't the side affects, it'd be one

of the best drugs going.

Hope you're getting plenty of sleep at night.

i'm back

Hi all, it has been a long, long time since i have posted. i hope

everyone is hanging in there. i stopped posting towards the end of my

pregancy because i didnt have much to say. i had to go on prednisone

(5mg) because the pregnancy made the polyps and congestion so much

worse. once it kicked in i felt great, great, great. i'm finally

weaning off of it, and of course, all of my symptoms are coming back -

no more smell, less taste, rubber mucus... all the things i did not

miss at all. and boy is it hard feeling not up to snuff while i'm

chasing around a toddler and caring for a newborn and working!

everything went fine with my delivery/recovery. i wound up using plain

codeine for a few days post csection for pain relief, but it would

have been nice to use tylenol once i didnt need the codeine anymore.

oh and i had another boy - 7 lbs, 1 oz, totally healthy and wonderful.

so although i'm not really happy to be back, i'm glad that this group

is here.... and man i wish that prednisone didnt have long term side

effects. i havent found anything that works nearly as well.

welcome back jennifer and congrats on the birth of your son! i hope

you are feeling better soon. after pregnancy things seem to go haywire

for a bit. i am still taking daily prednisone for a year and a half

now and it is the only way i can stay mostly clear. i do everything

else i am supposed to but i need that added boost i guess. make sure

to get enough rest especially with all you have on your plate! none of

us wants to be on this board but are so lucky to have others that

understand. hang in there and keep us posted. trudy.

Hey Becky, dont be discouraged. I was told that after the initial

weightloss to expect some regain due to eating solids and so forth.

Best way is to bump up your exercise if you can. This week will be

difficult since it will be raining for the majority of the day. My

plans are to get up early and head to the gym so I can work out over

there, and was thinking of getting back on the bike and peddle to my

favorite movies I know it's tough but hang in there. I've been

having some mushies like refried beans (canned, vegetarian/less fat),

cream of wheat, tofu in my soups, tomato soup and of course my all

time favorite hot/sour soup which usually has tofu in it...I try to

have snacks (my fruit cups) in between meals, and been drinking tons

of water. It's difficult but I know I can stick it out, perhaps try

some other mushies like mashed potatoes to give you something that

will last a bit. Once we get onto solids we won't be as hungry, which

is only a couple of weeks for you. I'm hoping to get my fill sometime

during the easter break...it's the only time I can really get away

from here for a few days. I'll say a prayer for you!!! Take Care and

keep smiling girl, this is just the first few steps of a long journey

but a journey that will bring us joy at each stage....Also, if you

have been working out alot, you are trading muscle for fat...muscle is

heavier...so don't worry. If you can have someone get your body

measurements...someone told me to go by that rather than the scale.

Tim, I was glad to meet you down there!! :-) I am I was

coming in as you were leaving. Another Washingtonian. :-) Isnt it

funny how you get home and you miss the staff down there, I feel the

same way. there was a mail nurse " I nick named him chachi from happy

days " (he doesnt know this of course). But he had the best smile and

was by my side all the way through surgery. He brightened my days

and I miss him too!! I also miss Yolonda, And Dr. Compos. Dr. A was

great too. He is so serious! He takes his work very serious, which

is great! He reminded me of a dad, scolding you and making sure you

are doing what you are supposed to. lol " did you walk, did you do

your breathing excersises, did you walk, did you do your breathing!!

everytime he saw you!! :-)

Sure sounds like one of these diseases.

I have found that doctor's use some strange terminology at times. It is really

not their fault but a fault of their training. I remember working under a

Surgeon who was a Colonel in the Canadian Army and also head of the Medical

School at Queen's University. When he had his residents following him around he

would chide them something ridiculous if they could not make a provisional

diagnosis without relying on tests.

To me he sounded like a great bully, when he really wasn't. He was a stickler

for a proper physical exam at the time they first saw the patient along with an

exhausting patient history.

I think some of the residents where deathly afraid of him and made some mistakes

which he used to teach them later.

I also remember a Doctor who had a great sense of humour so I won't name him as

he is still practicing medicine in Calgary. Anyway he saw this one soldier with

crab lice, but on the sick report he wrote " mobile dandruff " . We were laughing

our heads off but his company commander and Commanding Officer along with the

Base Surgeon were not laughing. Boy did he catch it. We still laugh about that

and rabbit hunting at night with a jeep when I do see him.

We did spend our fair share of time on the carpet. That was in mine and his

young and stupid age.

I'm back

Hello all, it's me Jen, and I'm back again. I left mostly because I

didn't think I had any diagnoses that would qualify me for belonging

to this board. Well, then I obtained treatment notes from my pain

management doctor for another purpose, and found out just exactly

how messed up my back is. Funny how doctors keep treating you, but

never tell you what exactly is wrong with you!

In reading my most recent notes, I have sacroiliitis, which we

already knew about, lumbar radiculopathy, facet syndrome, and a very

long worded thing called lumbar spondylogenic facet arthritis. I

understand all of the words separately, and I get " lumbar facet

arthritis " , but does this diagnosis mean I have a type of

spondylitis or spondylarthropathy? And is the overall prognosis for

it about the same as any other type of spondy? Has anyone ever

heard of this before, or does anyone on here have the same type of

problem?

I could really use some input here, especially since I didn't get

clued in til I saw my treatment records!

The first time I was a memeber, they didn't know what I had, and

then nothing was showing up on MRI's and x-rays. Over time, I

continued to get worse, to the point where I was sent to a really

great pain doctor. I've had several different types of

injections...I can't remember them all, but it was the facet blocks

that yielded the diagnostic clues, and they also qualified me for

candidacy for RF nerve ablations.

Those nerve ablations were what finally let to my ultimate diagnosis

of lumbar spondylosis and facet arthritis. The tiny camera the

doctor used detected what the MRI's and x-rays were missing, and the

nerve abations FINALLY gave me blessed relief.

I am not currently on any form of treatment for this, other than an

anti-inflammatory, and pain medication, and I'm quite happy to stay

that way. I was on Plaquenil at one time, and it helped for a

little bit, but then all it did was make my hair start to fall out

and make me look like a pizza face! Only when it comes down to the

point where I have no other choice will I take one of those drugs

again, but I will continue with the nerve ablations, as none of my

doctors has advised otherwise.

I know that some probably think I'm crazy, but the past 4 years of

my life have been filled with drugs, doctors, and illness. I don't

want to add more. I want to live my life to the fullest, without

more drugs bringing me down, as long as I can. I also have other

illnesses that I will write about in another note, but for now, I

have to go. We are getting ready to leave.

Jen, many of us with a spondyloarthropathies have the same clinical picture

as you describe. There are several conditions which can be attributed to these

findings:

<<wide range of factors may cause sacroiliitis:

* Heavy lifting, especially if you lift incorrectly or your muscles

aren't prepared for the activity

* A traumatic injury or sudden impact, such as a motor vehicle

accident or a fall, affecting your spine, lower back, pelvis or buttocks

* Spondyloarthropathies, which include ankylosing spondylitis,

arthritis associated with psoriasis and others

* Degenerative arthritis, also called osteoarthritis of the spine,

causing degeneration of the sacroiliac joints, which can cause mild

inflammation

and pain

* Pregnancy, because the pelvis must stretch to accommodate childbirth

* Infection of the sacroiliac joint, sometimes caused by bacteria in

food (brucellosis>>

There are other tests that may point to a Spondy type of disease. One of

them, the genetic factor blood test (HLA B27 antigen). 95% of Ankylosing

spondilitis patients are positive for this gene and up to 80% of Reactive

Arthritis.

Has your doctor given you this test? Family history can be helpful in Dx for

spondy. I can't remember your other symptoms...besides the lower back pain.

That would help a doctor come to a definite Dx.

The fact that your previous doctor ordered Plaquenil would tend to point to

a spondy disease or other arthritis. My husband has a relative with

osteoarthritis (degenerative arthritis), and she has the same findings that you

describe. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, and have the same findings on my

Xrays/MRI

that yours showed. Mine show the fusion on both sides. Usually, ReA shows up

on just one side of the SI joints.

Plaquenil is a relatively mild DMARD (disease modifying rheumatic drug) and

does cause loss of hair and hair blonding, but does not cause the pizza (or

moon) face side effect you mentioned. However, steroids (Prednisone) can give

this classic side effect. Sometimes, when we are on several drugs at one

time, we tend to think that one or the other is the culprit for the side

effect.

Long term Prednisone can be wicked. It is a strong drug...taken long term,

but is sometimes necessary. Anti-TNF drugs are given to help stop the

progression of the severe disease. Some of us have to make that decision and

weigh the

benefits to the side effects of these types of drugs.

I'm very glad you were able to find some relief from your pain (nerve

block/etc). I haven't had the nerve blocks, but my RH doctor wanted me to try

them.

I've had steroid/lidocaine shots to both SI joints and knees and it did

wonders for an acute which was causing a lot of nerve pain in my legs, knee and

feet, making it difficult to walk. I don't get them for chronic type pain

(which is a daily occurrence), just when it becomes unbearable.

What ever your Dx is...we all are in the same boat...so to speak. We

understand the pain and suffering and can relate to that.

doesn't make it much easier on you. I took Enbrel for about 18 months

and had mixed results. The inflammatory process and pain lessened, but

infections increased. I made the decision to stop it because I didn't

like the cancer risk nor the infections. (Same with me for Mtx.) It is

an extremely personal choice, based on your health, familial history

(relative to cancer) and other factors. No matter what you choose,
