I had

Synvisc injections.  I really thought they were going to work.  I felt some relief

after the first one.  But about three weeks after the last one, it was like I

hadn’t done anything at all.  The pain was back just as bad, if not

worse, than before.  My Dad had a different kind of injection – one that

was done over five injections – and he has been pain free for over two

years.  So I guess it just depends on the person.  I would certainly give it a

try before doing replacement.

Synvisc. Has anyone here had that? If so,

what were the results?

Hello MAry,

I had the Synvisc injections. When I had my first one it lasted me almost a year. The second one only lasted about 6 months. Then I had another injection something better then Synvisc taht my rhuem doctor did and it did not help at all. SO taht is when I had the TKR.

Hi In 2001 I went to a sports Dr. because of the arthritis in my knees (my GP wouldn't let me see an OS at that point), we talked about Synvisc - his take on it was that it could work or could not work - no way of knowing - but it was really expensive and my insurance would not cover it - so I opted to get a cortisone shot, unforunately that didn't last as long a I had hoped and the sports Dr. said he would not give me anymore shots unless I was booked or on the waiting list of TRK replacment....which I wasn't until now.... regards, <chiriquimary@...> wrote: My dr. also told me about Synvisc. I tried Synvisc also - for 4 weeks(?), I went in once a week to have

both knees injected - during that time, it seemed to me like it was

working - they felt better - but it didn't take long after the last

injection for them to go back to their usual state of pain. When

supposedly the benefit would last for months after the injections were

finished. So for me, it was just another waystation on my way to

having my knees replaced - which I did 6 weeks ago (by the way, though

I still have a lot of recovery to do and am NOT pain-free - many of

the situations and movements which caused pain no longer do).

I had great luck with Synvisc for 2 years....it helped immensely.

The first set of injections lasted about 9 months, the second set about 7

months, the third for about 6 months and the last for about 2 weeks

- that's when I got my knee replaced (10 weeks ago). It worked for

my - your mileage may vary!

I did Synvisc before my first tkr and it did not good. It seems that

those i have talked to that had the shots were less satisfied that the

ones that were happy. From my experience i wouldn't waste the time.

Hi ,

I had the Synvisc injections and they did nothing for me. I found out

later that my knees were so bad that nothing could have helped at all.

So I cannot in good faith make a judgment on whether they work or not.

Well, after reading many posts about Synvisc and researching it on the

web, I've decided to go for it. I'll have three injections, one a week

for three weeks. My insurance covers it so I figured, I've nothing to

lose. If it works for a while, great! I've bought some time. If it

doesn't work, then I really haven't lost anything. I'll get my first

injection this Thursday. I just hope that I'll be able to pass the time

with my face in a book. My doctor said that the process takes 45

minutes to an hour. I'd hate to lay there and look at the wall for that

time. ;)

About years ago Synvisc and I found that

it actually helped. Unfortunately, the results were not dramatic, but it did

help me stave off surgery for a bit. (Unfortunately, cortisone does nothing for

me) I found the shots to be relatively pain-free -- but that could have been

that I had a very good doctor. Good luck! -- Janet

Hi all: The makers of these injections say a series of five in each knee, rather than three, is more effective. Some doctors will go fight with the insurance company to get you five. I went through the series twice getting three the first time, five the second time. But both of my doctors would only do one knee at at time. It was a pain getting there 10 weeks in a row. The physician assistants usually gave the shots. I really preferred the one who took her time, had me lay down, put a bolster pillow under my knees and made it relaxing and painless. The first one had me sit up, rushed me through and it hurt. judy <judywade109@...> wrote: Ihad these shots and they did work for awhile. 45 minutes, why so long? I was in and out. I have had the 3-injection version twice.  It worked both times for me, but it

is really temporary.  Both times lasted about a year.  When I went in for my

third round, the doctor refused.  I had the knee replacement instead almost 8

months ago.  When it's time for the other knee, I will not waste time with the

SynVisc injections.

I had them and they did nothing. However, a close friend had them, and they kept

her from surgery for almost two years! I's a crap shoot .

I had SynVisc for two years and it really worked. On my last go-round, I

developed an allergy to it and cannot have it any more. Had my knee replaced in

December shortly afterward. I was very happy with how it made me feel and got a

lot of mobility back while using them.

It worked for me too. I had injections 5 times. The first 3 were miraculous.

lasted about 6 months. Gave me back mobility and eased the pain. The 4th only

lasted 2 months. While getting the 5th, I had a reaction. My one knee swelled.

The doc said no more. After that a tibial osteotomy in both knees (totally

useless) then TKR.

I did the series of injections for about 5 years into both knees (every six

months). Then I went to the single injection, which I believe I did twice.

They all did help me postpone my TKR as long as possible. Finally I got both

knees replaced last July. No more injections or pain.

,

I agree with you, rather than your husband. My son-in-Law had the injections

twice and I don't think they lasted 2 months. I hadn't heard much good about

the shots and had both my knees replaced. I didn't have them done together. I

was so scared and yet I would do it that way again, knowing what I know now.

The pain, other than surgery recovery, is over and done once the hip or knee is

replaced. Or at least it was for me.

My son-in-law just had a hip resurfacing and now still is recovering . And he

went through a lot more than I did before surgery. He is in his early 40's and I

am in my early 70's. I don't know if it was the shots or what, but he was in a

lot of pain while waiting for surgery.

Re: SynVisc

Thanks to *everybody* who responded about the injections! I think my husband is

going to give them a try. I know he wants to do anything possible to avoid

surgery, but I think he should just go ahead and " git 'er done " ! I suffered for

several years before finally getting my hip resurfaced and then wondered why the

heck I hadn't done it sooner!

The long term fix is well worth it. Before the right knee replacement I

was in pain, walking was difficult, and I had to limit activities. Pain

pills have their own problems and I could not take anything strong

enough and still continue my normal life activities. In the almost 8

years since that knee has not been a problem and in no way limited my

activities, I was back to what I was.

Now it is the left knee. I am putting it off a little just because I

want to get through the summer. I have so much to do but when winter

hits things slow down and I can plan on taking a couple of months out to

do little but sit around. Synvisc was suggested but the damage is so

far along that they do not think it would do any good.
