Donna, my problem is weakness. I do things, but get tired so easily that I crash back in bed.

My hubby is getting me a knee wrap icepack tonight from the medical supply. I could not find one at the pharmacy. I should have had one a long time ago.

Doctors should send one home with patients kind of like the goodie bag when you have a baby. lol.

I had total knee replacement.

Someone sent in a website with exercises and I am going to put them to practice. Thanks, Terry

Terry,

I am sure the rest of our members are as shocked as I am. Did you have a total knee replacement?

If so, the fact that you can hardly get out of bed at this point greatly concerns me because of the risk of blood clots.

No physical therapy after joint replacement -- is your doctor insane? I can't believe your insurance company would agree to that decision because it could cause you many problems down the road as well as more cost to the insurance company. That includes the formation of painful scar tissue that will hinder your recovery. It is so critical to get that knee extended and bent immediately following surgery, and it's not something you can do on your own.

A bag of peas as an ice pack?! Again...insane. I'm still using my ice wraps and it's been four months since my knee replacements. Did the hospital use ice wraps while you were there? Most people are sent home with them, and they have become quite high tech -- made of a thermal material that wraps around your leg with velcro tabs and compartments with several bags of the "new" ice packs, granules that freeze but do not melt to liquid.

The constant passive motion machine is not recommended by most but not all doctors. But everything else you have written has me terribly concerned.

Are you taking pain medication now? Pain management is important to your physical and mental well being.

Does your insurance require a referral from the doctor? If not, I would get on the phone right now and get an appointment with a physical therapist. And it is important that you get up and walk often. I would see if I could find a new surgeon that would take on your follow-up care because I think you need someone with knowledge and compassion.

Sorry, Terry, I hope I haven't bombarded you. But I went through a double knee replacement four months ago, and I'm concerbed. I can't even imagine your frustration and pain.

Warm regards,

Donna

I tried to but once a doctor does the surgery, other doctors don't

want to follow up.

I have a call into my insurance company now to see what can be done.

Terry, Why don't you go to your general practitioner (family doctor) and talk to him/her? Mine readily perscribed PT for me when I wasn't getting it . . . althoughI must say since the first one they sort of expect a "newbie" needs PT simply because they don't know what exercises they can do to regain strength. If you have a choice I would ask a PT visit at home to show you some basic exercises you can do to get started. Then, when you are able to get out go to a PT clinic and get a better workout. If you'd like me to give you the list of standard PT exercises for hip replacements I can either find them online for you or type them up. Remind me this evening. I'm at work now and don't have a lot of time. I did not get a machine at home to improve movement. I can't even imagine what that would be. The bag of peas is actually a very good icer. It shapes nicely to the

area. Good luck! Pat> > He did not and would not order me any therapy. I

Hi Terry,

You're not an Australian are you? After I came out of hospital I had only 3

sessions of physio. They say here that you don't need physio for hips. I

worked hard by myself and never failed to do my exercises at least twice a

day, but I walk like a duck. I actually disagree with no physio for hips

and feel some of my problems are from lack of physio in the early stages.

Physio is not just about doing exercises and strengthening, they notice when

your body is not doing things the right way and can correct things before

they become ingrained habits that are almost impossible to break.

I think I'll be using the stick for the rest of my life now. The physio

says my waddle will create spinal problems if I don't use the stick.

When Terry said she need a knee ice pack, I took it that she had knee replacement? If so, the PT needs to bend that leg back in a way the person who had surgery can't do it. PT for a knee replacement can go on for two, three or more months -- depending on things like scar tissue and how soon you meet your goals in degrees for straightening and flexing. I went to PT 2 1/2 months and needed every session I had to get these knees working.Margaret <zztinau@...> wrote: Hi Terry,You're not an Australian are you? Terry:

You did not say how long ago you had your knee replaced. If it has

been 2 or 3 weeks being weak is normal. You body is reacting to a

major trauma and all of the energy is focused on healing the knee.

Here is a book I recommend to all who come to the forum.

" Total Knee Replacement and Recovery "

By Dr. Brugioni MD and Dr. Jeff Falkel Ph.D, PT.

You can buy it at Amazon for about $16. It is written like a workbook

and covers your recover from day to day at the first then week to week

out to a year. Has lots of exercises and gives you tons of info in

all the important items that you need to know. One of the authors had

both his knees replaced so you have the benefit of hearing hearing

from both sides of the knife so to speak.

Hope this helps, I will be praying for you. Get those kids working to

help you know they want too 8^). I come from a family of seven (been

there done that).

Hi Terry,

If what you say is true then I am truly concerned for your well being.

You should have started therapy within 24 hours of your surgery. The

fact that your physician won't even answer your calls or authorize

Physical Therapy is criminal. Please, Please find another surgeon

FAST. Call your local PT center and arrange with your insurance to

get in there today. Then report your doctor for malpractice.

Good Luck

Thankyou. I have written a letter to my doctor that I plan to fax on monday. I am basically insisting on PT. If he turns me down, my insurance co. has authorized me to get a second opinion.

I don't know if I can get a doctor to cover another doctor's surgery or not. I will see what happens when I make calls on Monday. Terry

I'm with you, Elaine! I imagine any other surgeon would be absolutely horrified at how Terry has been treated. And even if it not common for a surgeon to take on the follow-up care for a patient operated on by another, I have a feeling that in this case there may more than one compassionate surgeon out there that would help her get on the road to recovery. I've just been spitting nails over this. I agree with Alan that this guy should be charged with malpractice. Warm regards, Donna Elaine Poage <meuw@...> wrote: Donna I think we all echo your concern for Terry. Terry, Glad to hear you got that ice wrap! Even when you are sleeping, it will stay in place and keep working for you. I read it also provides compression, which is supposed to be another good thing. You're in my thoughts and prayers. Donnaabcdollsco@... wrote: Donna, my problem is weakness. I do things, but get tired so easily that I crash back in bed. My hubby is

getting me a knee wrap icepack tonight from the medical supply. I could not find one at the pharmacy. I should have had one a long time ago. Doctors should send one home with patients kind of like the goodie bag when you have a baby. lol. I had total knee replacement. Someone sent in a website with exercises and I am going to put them to practice. Thanks, Terry In a message dated 1/12/2007 1:30:47 P.M. have a total knee replacement? If so, the fact that you can hardly get out of bed at this point greatly concerns me because of the risk of blood clots. No physical therapy after joint replacement -- is your doctor insane? I can't believe your insurance company would agree to that decision because it could cause you many problems down the road as well as more cost to the insurance company. That includes the formation of painful scar tissue that will hinder your recovery. It is so critical to get that knee extended and bent immediately following surgery, and it's not something you can do on your own. A bag of peas as an ice pack?! Again...insane. I'm still using my ice wraps and it's been four months

since my knee replacements. If not, I would get on the phone right

now and get an appointment with a physical therapist. Warm regards, Donna
