Guest guest
Terry: Related to getting a new doctor. Tell him the whole story about the doctors indifferent attitude post-op. Also tell the new doctor that as far as you know the replacement was a success and that you just need post-op care for complete rehabilitation. What I am saying is that you don't want to bad mouth the old doctor other than the lack of post-op care. This will help the new doctor see you are not coming in with an ax-to-grind. Bottom line is that you are just looking for the best care. Tell him what you have heard over and over again by all here on the forum who have had the operation and the experiences we have been. This is the norm and you are just asking for that same care. Hope this helps. Don
Guest guest
Other people have said it, but I say it too - find a different doctor. It makes no sense for your doctor to abandon you like this. It is so important that you get the care you need, especially in the first weeks. You need to be bending and straightening your knee, using ice to cut down on swelling and pain - and perhaps the nausea could be from whatever pain med you're using - there are many different ones, so a good doctor would listen to you and try to help. I also agree with trying your regular doctor - if he is like mine, he will be very helpful - and maybe can also refer you to an orthopedist that will be more helpful. Honestly - don't go on with this guy you have now... Judy > > I am having problems with my doctor. I feel sort of helpless and on my > own to figure this out. > He did not and would not order me any therapy. Guest guest
i too am just amazed at any doctor acting this way -- i wonder how many knee operations he has done and i feel bad for those people as well... i am sure they are not walking very well if they stuck with him.... terry get the help you need no matter how many phone calls you have to make or who you have to call. i am 3 mos post tkr and my surgeon has been soooo wonderful.... after 1 week i have to say i was telling my hubby oh i dont think i will get the other one done because i had had a couple bad days..... but within a couple more weeks i was looking forward to getting the other one done so it would feel as "sturdy" as the new one... yes there is still some pain with the new one, but nothing like i have with my old one and it feels sturdy when i walk on it -- doesn't feel like it may give way any second.... i am having my left knee done on january 31 and have been told don't expect everything to go as smoothly -- all knees are different, and i realize that -- but even if it goes half as well as the first i cant complain and my surgeon has been most of the reason for this and of course the pt! but my surgeon was always there whenever i had a "stupid" question or if something didn't seem quite right he would check it out... so please terry get some help, there are plenty of good doctors out there and i pray you can find one that will help you.... take care, love, alice ***********************************************************Build Up Other People.Build up as many people as you can. Guest guest
I have done alot of thinking on this and I think the critical time that I needed help is passed. Now it will be a problem if I get PT as I will have to drive to one. Driving takes so much out of me right now. Also there will be a co pay, where the in home stuff woul have been 100 percent covered. Now I am left on my own to find out the best things to help myself improve. I am going to get that work book. I know about the bike and I have one. I am still doing the bed exercises. I just have to fight in this. I do also plan to talk to my doctor, but since I know it will be hard to get another doctor to cover my surgery, and the PT will be more of a pain to do right now, then a help, I am not going to deal with that right now. I am going to presure him to help me with exercise suggestions. I will mention to him that this should have been part of the program and I DO plan to inform him that he is the only doctor out there that leaves his patients without help. I don't care if he drops me as a patient. I don't need him right now anyway. This man is like a cold fish to talk to. He can't wait to get away from his patients, once he is in the room with them. Gosh, either he does not like what he is doing or he is just trying to pack them in like sardines for the money. Guest guest
The first surgeon I used for simple knee repair was like that, Terry. One day I was his 102nd patient in one day. His exhausted, fed-up assistant told me. The few minutes he was with me he managed to be arrogant. Needless to say, he didn't do my knee replacements. I wish you would seek an assessment. My concern is that you know exactly what you are dealing with. If scar tissue has formed, you won't make progress. And if it is there, another surgeon could put you in the hospital for a simple manipulation o get rid of it. Perhaps that would qualify you for in-home PT? My outpatient PT also came with a co-pay. But I worked out a payment system with them, a little at a time. Wishing you the best, Donnaabcdollsco@... wrote: I have done alot of thinking on this and I think the critical time that I needed help is passed. Guest guest
Alice, You describe exactly how I feel -- sore or not sore -- I love that sturdy feeling. I had both my knees done at once. I had my doubts first if I had made the right decision. But at four months post op, I had the most productive week I've had in two years. Every evening, I worked at organizing the house -- something I haven't been able to do for a long time. I was up and down the steps with Christmas decorations, laundry, things to go into storage, things to throw out. Two weeks before Christmas, my children had to come and carry the decorations up the steps and do all the decorating for me. How far I've come since then. Even though I'm still having some pain at times, it's now nearly what I had before surgery. Looking at the x-rays before knee surgery, my surgeon my hips would have to replaced as soon as possible. But I haven't had a bit of hip pain since about two weeks after surgery. These new, strong knees are obviously supporting me in a way they haven't in a long time -- taking the pressure off my hips. Thank you for sharing. I'm feeling positive, but stories like yours still help. Godspeed. My thoughts and prayers will be with you as you go for that second knee. Warm regards, Donnapudgyaunt99@... wrote: i too am just amazed at any doctor acting this way -- i wonder how many knee operations he has done and i feel bad for those people as well... i am sure they are not walking very well if they stuck with him.... terry get the help you need no matter how many phone calls you have to make or who you have to call. i am 3 mos post tkr and my surgeon has been soooo wonderful.... after 1 week i have to say i was telling my hubby oh i dont think i will get the other one done because i had had a couple bad days..... but within a couple more weeks i was looking forward to getting the other one done so it would feel as "sturdy" as the new one... yes there is still some pain with the new one, but nothing like i have with my old one and it feels sturdy when i walk on it -- doesn't feel like it may give way any second.... i am having my left knee done on january 31 and have been told don't expect everything to go as smoothly -- all knees are different, and i realize that -- but even if it goes half as well as the first i cant complain and my surgeon has been most of the reason for this and of course the pt! but my surgeon was always there whenever i had a "stupid" question or if something didn't seem quite right he would check it out... so please terry get some help, there are plenty of good doctors out there and i pray you can find one that will help you.... take care, love, alice ***********************************************************Build Up Other People.Build up as many people as you can. Guest guest
The other thing Terry is that if you don't get your bend and the scar tissue builds you might need manipulation.  This is the main reason you need to start therapy imediatly. On Jan 15, 2007, at 4:47 AM, abcdollsco@... wrote:I have done alot of thinking on this and I think the critical time that I needed help is passed. Now it will be a problem if I get PT as I will have to drive to one. Guest guest
Hi Terry, As I was reading about your doctor I thought " He sounds burnt out to me! " . Sometimes people in the helping professions get really burnt out if they do too much. Your doctor might have been an excellent doctor who kept on giving to his patients until he had no more to give. It can be very hard to recognise that you are burnt out. It just seems that the patients become more and more demanding all the time. This could explain why you have been so neglected when he has those two stars with your insurance company. I don't know how you get him to take a break. I think a patient talking about burnout might make it worse. I don't know your system over there, but thought I would throw my thoughts into the pot.
