Being grateful for what you have has gotten me through more than anything else.

I have a large peice of paper on the wall and everyday I make a point to write

something on it that I am grateful for. I first started doing this after my

son's father died. All I could put on there was stuff like having a roof over

my head, breathing, being able to walk and talk, whatever I could find and it

wasn't much to begin with. Now I can see how much I really have to be thankful

to God for. I have hep c but I also have a life.

When you go back and look at ones, I still have the first one from 7 years ago

when I thought my life was over and had nothing to look forward too, it is

amazing to see the difference in how you look at things.lol I have known for 9

years and I can relate to all who have found out recently.

First, hepatitis C (hep C, HCV [Hepatitis C Virus] is a slow developing disease.

A person may be infected for 20 or 30 years before a problem occurs. It is also

unpredictable, it may only take 5 years to cause problems. HOW your husband was

infected is not as important as WHEN he was infected. The biggest factor is

what he will do now that he knows about his infection. Just as a precaution,

after he gets confirmation that he indeed has an active infection, get the rest

of his immediate family tested. There will be several more tests coming in his

life. A viral load (PCR by RNA) will show if his infection is active. About

15% of those with antibodies will not have an active infection. If he was

infected years ago he may need a liver biopsy. There is a really deep line

drawn in the sand regarding the biopsy vs ultrasound and enzyme tests. Your

husband and his doctor will discuss the options.

Knowlege is power in the hep C community. The library has many resources, but

I'd look for books published in the last 2 or 3 years - things are changing

fast. The internet is exploding with stuff. One of the best places I have

found is: www.hcvadvocate.org. There are guides for the newly diagnosed, 'Fact

Sheets' on dozens of topics. Everything is downloadable and printable if you

keep Alan's logo on the page.

Check at HCV Advocate, the American Liver Foundation, Hepatitis Foundation

International and Liver Health Today Magazine for a support group in your area.

Most will have a phone number you can call to get answers quicky.
